This is just a tiny proportion of my 2019/2020 season that I managed to capture on video, I can't capture most of the flights on video as they are simply too far away or behind hedges etc. My aim is to try and show their different flight styles, hunting techniques and strategies. I try to fly my birds as close to their wild cousins lifestyle as possible.

Lovely to see an eagle hunting in his element, beautiful waiting on, stooping, great images depicting his speed, and, interestingly, he also seems small enough and maneuverable-enough to hunt like a hawk, in some cases, and really shows persistence in the chase! Falconry - A stirrer of emotions. To get the very best out of your birds they must be flown as if wild. To do that means you have to live & breath falconry every day. Thanks

Chris Baker Yes that’s because I fly him as if wild giving loads of freedom and allowing his natural flying style to adapt. If it’s off the glove flights they take some time to get speed up due to their large wings that are evolutionary designed for soaring & stooping avian prey. Most humans work against Bonelli’s natural abilities rather than spending time to get to know and study their wild cousins hunting strategies and work with them as a formidable team.
@@hawkinsfalconry This is an amazing video, thank you for sharing this with us all. I had no idea Bonelli's could dive like that. I am just wondering if there are other birds that would perform better with this type of approach? Like a Ferruginous Hawk maybe?

Yes it sure is a thrashing in the hills. Definitely keeps me fit! Yes goshawking for 9 years got me very familiar with telemetry. GPS has changed the game immensely! Thanks very much.

Nigel that was tremendous - as was the first episode in the Bonellis saga . Made even better by the absence of voice over , the camera work says it all. Top Class. Why did you pick a Bonelli to fly ...is it similar in training / performance etc to a Steppe Eagle ? Also i notice that sometimes with the Harrises and other hawks you fly them with just the anklets and no jesses ..is this to keep weight and clutter of the birds feet ? @@davemcc7171 Hi, I picked a Bonelli's Eagle for quite a few reasons, mainly because of their versatility with different flying styles i.e. off-the-glove, following-on in woodlands, ferreting and also hill soaring after both fur and feather. Bonelli's have never been explored to their full potential, most falconers' in history literature have written bad accounts about their experiences. In my opinion if you have the time, dedication, commitment, land to fly them and have years of Accipiter mentality then you have a reasonable chance of success if you put serious amounts of time into them. Most just glove fly, which is good in some circumstances but not others. Falconry to me is to fly a bird as close to their natural flying style as possible, if you haven't got all of the aforementioned in place then I simply say to people they shouldn't take up falconry. (Look at life from their perspective. What would you want to fly like?) If you're taking away their ability to fly as if wild then I personally think that you're taking away their freedom. And in the current circumstances of Covid-19 I think some falconers' would learn a lot if they reflected a little and asked themselves what it's like to have some freedom taken away...?
Regarding jesses I don't like flying with them on unless glove flying or ferreting where you need control. One reason is clutter, another reason is they get caught up on trees and also when I'm in the hills I get wild Peregrines, Red Kites, Buzzards, Eagles thinking they are carrying prey in their talons and come over to investigate or attack.

This really is some world class falconry as it should be done with total respect for the birds, I always wonder how you manage to get your eagles and hawks to wait on above you so well/high, is there a technique to this or just practice? Cheers
Saker Thank you. I always get them hunting off the glove first to ensure the bond is enforced where they understand that I’m an awesome perch where quarry is produced from. I then take them to a hill with 10-15mph ridge lift wind, put them at the top and call them to the glove at the bottom and simply increase the time spent aloft. When they’re above you have to produce quarry quick to reinforce the positive flight style and gradually increase the time between flushing game. The trick is to keep their focus on you rather than drift off too far out of position.

Puede haber algo mas puro, que dejar volar tu alma liberada de toda preocupación, de toda incertidumbre de un mañana, para dejarte llevar en una danza inigualable que perdura desde el comienzo de las cosas.... Puede haber algo mas vibrante, que te transforme en un ser que todo lo ve y todo lo alcanza.....sin duda de haber un cielo donde van los cetreros debe ser algo así, de lances infinitos como los mismos cielos.......

Yes he’s doing great thanks. My editor has broken on my computer so I haven’t done any editing for 12 months. I’ve got plenty of footage of his third season to plough through when I have time thanks.
