  • Panasonic DMR EZ48V DVD/VHS recorder U80 and U81 faults cured.
    This video will only be of interest to someone wanting to know how to strip down of a Panasonic DMR EZ48V DVD-VHS player/recorder to get to the faulty PCB and replace the failing capacitors that causes the U80 and U81 faults.
    The reason that I made this video is that when I found someone on eBay selling a ‘Fix’ for this fault they said that it involved a fair bit of dismantling and that anyone not comfortable with a significant amount of dismantling may not want to carry out the repair. The only tools you need are a Philips screwdriver, a small flat blade screwdriver, a soldering iron and a small pair of wire cutters. I use a solder sucker but you can manage without one. Once you know what has to be done and how to do it, it should probably take around 30 to 45 minutes to complete the job. In this video you’re with me for the first time that I’ve carried out this repair.
    I purchase the fixing kit, which comprises of nine electrolytic capacitors from Steve who trades on eBay under the store name of ‘wizardfest’ the nine capacitors cost little more than a cup of coffee and Steve emailed four pages of instructions.
    I don’t know Steve and I’ve never dealt with wizardfest before but he has a good rating (November 2017) and his ‘kit’ works for me, the delivery was fast and the instructions are good.
    You can contact Steve at vtsrepairs@tiscali.co.uk The repair kit has the item number as #172638133006 and you can find it on eBay by entering that number.
    Maybe you’ll let him know where you found the info?
    I hope this helps you.
    Kind Regards . . . Andy.

    Just replaced the same components on an EZ47V (In Australia) same machine no Scart and found this video invaluable for the dismantling/reassembly . I also sourced components from the same supplier. Thanks again.

      That's great I love it when I can say that I've been able to help someone and somehow it's even better when it's someone on the other side of the world (not that the world is a very big place anymore)We'll probably never meet my friend but I'm really pleased that I could help you. This is good and the way TH-cam should be used, to help each other.Kind Regards . . . Andy

    I have two of these Panasonic EZ series DMRs. Both have been dead for over a year with the code "F60" I may have the courage to attempt a disassembly for capacitor replacement now that I have seen your video. It was very informative and I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you.

    Very helpful video; my Panasonic had "died", and I got the bits from Wizardfest, and had no problems other than that the DVD player arrangement on mine had far more screws holding it than the four on your model. It took a while to work out what to undo in what order - the equipment now works again. Thank you very much for posting this.

    Fantastic video. Found it after I'd done some disassembly, but very helpful for putting it all back together.
    Unfortunately, I didn't know about the replacement kit. So I ordered just 3 capacitors from Mouser and replace them (which were bulging); would have been better to do more while the unit was torn apart.
    Yes, a slightly complicated tear-down, but really not that bad... and this video makes it easy! Thank you.

    Hi Andy, Glad to see you're still around! I love all your tube radio videos (valve). This is a bit more modern than what I'm used to but I'll enjoy watching nonetheless. Take care, Gary

    • @AndyDaviesByTheSea
      @AndyDaviesByTheSea  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gary I was sure that I responded to your comment but I don't see it here. I was brought up on the old body-tip-spot resistors (carbon composite, what we used to call carbon compost ) And when electrolytic capacitors used to fail they'd blow silver foil and oily wax all over the place. I used to love the smell of the old selenium (metal plate) rectifiers when they failed, such a distinctive aroma. This modern stuff doesn't even fail with a satisfying flash and bang. I can remember very often to predict the fault simply by the smell you got when you took the back off the set. All the best . . . Andy

      Hi Eddy I started off in radio and TV with body-tip-spot resistors and capacitors were called 'condensers' remember when they used to explode in spectacular fashion! Silver foil and guff all over the place. I used to love the smell of a burnt out Selenium rectifier, so distinctive. As for this surface-mounted stuff, I don't fancy messing about with some of the million pin ic's that I see in the modern kit. All the very best . . . Andy

    Hi Andy - great video - many thanks! I have a similar model of Panasonic, and it had the U81 fault. After watching your video, I decided to have a try at fixing it. When I dismantled the unit, 5 of the specified capacitors were visibly blown, so I ordered the parts from Wizardfest and set to it. I haven't soldered a PCB for >30 years, so didn't make a very good job first time round. I think the main problem was that my soldering iron was probably too big, and it broke a couple of the solder pads off when I tried to remove the old blown capacitors. As expected, when I put it together it still didn't work, but now gave the 'Please Wait' fault. Not wanting to admit defeat, I got a new soldering iron for Xmas with a finer tip. I did research how to repair the solder pads, but it looked like a difficult skill to master, so I decided to bodge it instead. On the bad joints, I traced the track on the PCB to the next joint, and soldered a piece of wire from the badly jointed capacitor leg to the next solder joint along the track. It's not pretty, but when I put it back together and tried it, it all worked perfectly :) Many thanks for giving me the confidence to have a go.

    I just began viewing yr video 3 years later, as I have same fault with my Panasonic HDD box.. You had done a great talk through of dismantling yr player., I think if/when I look to do mine it would be best to record it on mobile phone as writing notes are arduous if you keep drawing diagrams to show where different screws come out., Or alternatively I will first see if I can get a replacement board 😬..Best wishes Michael.👏👍🌞 Update; I purchased a power board for £44 off eBay..

    That brings back pleasant memories for me. I was a VCR/Telephone/TV technician way back in the late 80s and early 90s. My co-worker got all the TVs, so I only worked on my own and a couple for the boss. Most of my work was small items and VCRs. I am amazed at how the modern item is slightly trickier - the cost cutting has resulted in some minor changes that cause just a bit more trouble to you. Just before you said it, I thought "pick up the door before installing the front." I've put on several just like that.

      I can remember a million years ago fixing a pilot light on a mains powered Bakelite radio, the bulb was flickering as it was lose. I reached in to turn it and caught my wrist on the top cap (anode) on one of the valves, my reaction was of course to whip my arm back at the speed of light, the radio went over me head and smashed to pieces on the wall behind me! I can still remember the two pin plug just missing me face. I think my boss gave the customer a transistor radio to replace it. Moral of the story, always disconnect the mains first.All the best . . Andy

    Many thanks for the best 'how to' video I've seen. With your help I've managed to repair my DVD-VHS player using the parts supplied by Wizardfest. My particular problem was the 'Please Wait' message after switching on which it has also cured. After completing the re-assembly and switching on, I found that I needed to reload the firmware which I did using a disk I'd bought from the web some time ago. Thanks again, Andy. Hi Andy, welcome back and I hope you are well. I done a repair on a Panasonic sa-hx150, monday just gone it had no fault codes apart from saying "no disk" anyway voltages were all okay, the carriage switches was okay, after further checks it turned out to be the spindle motor. Anyway I could not get a motor but could get the carriage assembly "bsr=a1 i think it was" for silly money so i ended up taking the motor apart i was able to retention the fine metal "no carbon" brushes and re-lubed it etc, and after a hassle re-crimping the 1mm case "plus hot glue" lol. All worked fine after and customer was over the moon being as it was a home theatre dvd system complete with 5x160watt "D-class" power amps and 1x200watt sub amp. Take care, Paul from London

      Hi Rick thanks for the kind words, I appreciate your comments. I haven't had much time for video making (or watching) as we've just been busy having fun and doing some property developing with buying and selling houses. Man I love to be doing something exciting and pushing the boundaries a bit. How did we ever have the time to go to work? Well done on the licence. We're planning a move one hour up the road to Aberystwyth, we've bought an huge old 1950's building with fabulous sea views and loads of space for aerials so I might be getting back on the air once we've demolished the existing concrete block building and built a well insulated house there. As for this video I think I might make snappier version of it as I've just received the second kit to fix the other recorder that has the same fault, I figure as I now know what I'm doing I can make a better video.All the very best to you and the family and a bit early but have a Happy Christmas. 73's . . @AllAmericanFiveRadio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured you were busy, and I'm glad you're having fun with it. And good luck with the move, might make an interesting video. I'm doing part-time work for a guy who has some very interesting patents. One of them is putting nitrogen in water, to fertilize plants, without using any chemicals. Another one of his patents is a process for cleaning the water in swimming pools without using any chemicals. I build and repair these units and more, and have some influence in design. But I would like to be a little busier so I have been thinking about teaching at the senior center or at a junior college, but I'm not quite sure what the subject would be. I need to go there and find out what they need. I used to be a course developer and instructor for Nortel Networks, besides being a software engineer. I'm glad to hear things are going well with you'll.
      Best regards Rick

    Hi there, Wow! that looks like quite a job, but being that this was back in 2017 and I'm viewing it just now sure does help.
    Kind of a shame I didnt see it back then as looking at your power board you can see the caps that were Bulged on the tops. I bet those were the ones that were giving you the problem of the error codes, the rest probably were ok - but you would need a ESR meter to test the resistance value to be sure. As the caps dry out the resistance goes up and thats the problem most of the time in power circuts. Again a job well done and you saved it from out of the land fill.

    On your PCB some of those capacitors were fine, no need to replace them. A few were obviously domed but a few were just fine. Novices changing capacitors that do not need changing can do more harm.

    Great detail Andy in your breakdown and advice. I've not long acquired a DMR EZ49V. It seems that Wizzardfest doesn't hold a kit for this particular model. I'm experiencing the same U81 error message so seems likely to be this common capacitor issue. Do you think the relevant capacitors needed would be the same as in the DMR EZ48V kit. Furthermore do you have any experience of the EZ49 ? I've got no knowledge of electronic components, but do have a good range of tools and a have a go attitude

    Great video funny thing is my dad has just got the exact model from a car boot sale .the original owner had died and he got it for £3 as the remote was missing the vhs deck had someones wedding video in it and the dvd drive seemed like it was not working it had a film inside tried a couple of other disc a dvd and a cd read fine then noticed the dic from the drive was a blu-ray .Very helpful video as no doubt at some point the caps will also fail in the one my dad got .

      Hey £3 that's not bad at all. originally one of the attractions of this particular model was that it can take RAM discs witch are reusable many time over. I use a hard drive now for most things, I love it as we record everything we want to watch and we never, ever, watch an advert! And yes I think there's a good chance your dads machine will develop the U80-U81 fault as it' seems to be a well known stock fault.All the best . . Andy

    Received my capacitors from ebay yesterday. Here goes . ill let you know how i get on

      Finally got to make a start. I have the circuit board out. Now to change the capacitors.

    • @robg4817
      @robg4817 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Taking my time. Finally soldered the 9 capacitors in the circuit board. Be careful flipping the circuit board over each time you look for where the capacitor is located. Its very easy to bend the other capacitors and the side wire clips, when lightly pressing on the board. Also when soldering. Now to put it all back together. Lets see how it goes

    • @robg4817
      @robg4817 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      After checking it over and putting it back together. I plugged it all in, and success. It all works. Thankyou for a great video. I'm really pleased it went smoothly.

    Great video. I think of you often when I microwave something such as a mug of tea to re-heat it. A pet peeve of mine is that the microwave platter does not stop in the same position as it starts, I cannot see through the door as it is opaque so a manual switch off is impossible. What matter? Well, I put the mug in with the handle facing me and when the m/wave has finished after a minute or two the handle is usually around the back somewhere, so I go in carefully to turn the mug around to reach the handle. Every time this happens I think "I bet Andy could fettle this!" LOL. Why are these white goods so stupid these days when I can tell Alexa to control lights and heating etc? Regards.

      Hi Will, don't get me started on modern equipment. I can't understand why we have to put up with so much rubbish software. When I used to design and built industrial equipment folks expected it to work tomorrow the same as it did yesterday, we don't get that with a lot of new stuff.Kind Regards . . . Andy

    Heya, just to let you know, somebody seems to have reuploaded your video without credit, elsewhere on TH-cam -- they might be trying to make money off your content:
    If you go to /watch?v=VKmxKQQ0xeA you'll see it's your video, you could probably file a copyright complaint there if you wanted it to be removed or you could speak to the channel owner

    • @AndyDaviesByTheSea

      Hi thanks for letting me know, yes someone has simple copied the video and they are probable getting paid for adverts, anyway I've submitted a takedown request. Thank you for noticing the problem. I get a lot of fun out of TH-cam and it helps me a lot, in return I do things with the aim of helping other folks for free and without the bother of adverts for my viewers.Thanks again. Kind Regards . . . Andy

    some basic info but it would have been better if you had listed the capacitors that were used at the end of the video as you said you would @ 22:36. You showed the cap list during the repair but it wasn't really clear enough to read properly.Overall a laboured exercise with lots of ums and arrs as you fumbled your way through it like a rank amateur would have.
