Same, I have such a hard time finding manga/anime I like because I don't like anime bullshit lol. There's literally got to be like 30 trash series for every good one, it's just too hard to dig through it all.

@@yayalu8650 I can only imagine those people like the "mystery boxes" bs, because 20th Century Boys is basically "Lost on crack". For me, that particular narrative gimmick killed any investment I had for the characters and the story. It kills the pacing and I can't help but feel the author didn't have a single clue of what to do with the mysteries he came up with because the payoff for them is always unsatisfactory or killed any suspension of disbelief I had for the story.

Right? I was skeptical the first episode thinking, "Pretty girl doing unpopular things? *sarcastically* How original..." I was worried in investing time in a Mary Sue, but I pushed on because he recommended Tokyo Godfathers and Silver Spoon and "has a low tolerance for Anime Bullshit." There's alot of heart and character in that anime, and I'm glad I pushed forward.
Witch Hat Atelier is a must-read, honestly. I second everything Sungwon says in this video about it. The art is gorgeous, the story is lovely, the magic system is cool as hell and the world feels epic in a kind of unknowable way. It's great, my favourite manga of the last couple years, and it's wholesome to boot. So good.
Okay if you like Witch Hat, Paranatural is a great webcomic for you. It's a lot more goofy but the artist is super creative and I don't want to spoil it but there are a lot of similarities to Witch Hat Atelier with a complicated mentor, some lovable students, and a cool magic system. The art changes a lot (the comic started in 2011) but I love Zach's world full of spirits.

It was so good and had me crying in the living room lol Absolutely devastated, though, when I learned the author passed away and thus left it unfinished. Definitely left an impression on me growing up.
With the Light is super special to me, my wife, and her older sister. My wife's sister and I are both autistic and it just means a lot to us. I'm so glad you were able to read and enjoy it.

When I saw Blue Flag on the teaser, I was so hyped! It's such an amazing manga. I've bought every single volume so far and it has been an amazing ride. It's a story I personally feel everyone should have the chance to read. It presents its messages really well and provides the kind of great representation certain communities deserve in manga. You'll definitely fall in love with it. Hoping it gets adapted into an anime one day, but I honestly won't be mentally or emotionally prepared when they do XD
You know One of the best moments you could experience is the moment of buying what you don’t know will be your favorite manga but of course you’ll only find out later and think about it fondly. you into the store pick out one of the books that seemed interesting you go to the cashier and pay then go home make a cup of tea, snuggle up in your bed and start reading it and from the first chapter you just know it
I love that you own "Our Dreams at Dusk"! It's one of my favorite manga of all time, and I hope that it gets more recognition. If you're really into manga about elderly people and manga about cats, and sad things, I highly recommend reading "A Man and His Cat" if you haven't already. It's a compilation of short stories about an older gentleman who adopts a cat and it changes both of their lives in the best way. It has so much heart, and I have shed many tears, but in a good way. Cannot recommend harder.
It makes me so happy to see Maison Ikkoku being mentioned; it is my favorite manga of all time and one that I feel is often overlooked by the modern generation of otaku in the West. It's often overlooked even by Rumiko Takahashi fans since it kind of strays away from the fantastic into a more grounded in reality 80's Japan. I would urge anyone that enjoys romance manga to check it out; Maison Ikkoku and Kimagure Orange Road have had huge influence on pretty much all romantic mangas that followed.
Finally BLUE FLAG!! Its such an underrated manga series, the characters and their development and interactions were so beautiful. You have A+ taste ProZD
comfy vid like seeing all the books and learning about them and just watching them wave around in your hand. sometimes i get bogged down in the same-old and being reminded of all the art and artistic people out there gets me going again

Yay, I've read all of the series you mentioned and I must say - you have excellent taste. One caveat about Golden Kamuy is the food scenes die down after awhile (you're close to reaching that point), but the charaterisation, educational tidbits, and humour are more than enough to hold it up. You'll probably get a lot of recs, but if you want another great comedy series with an official English release and an anime adaptation, I'd highly suggest picking up Saint Young Men. I was iffy on trying it since I'm not religious myself, but Hiksru Nakamura has a knack for being able to make anything hilarious. Jesus x Buddha is a bromance I didn't believe possible before touching that series.

Give it a try, esp if you already like anime! They forgo the sometimes drawn out filler nature of anime, and feel like a boiled down best version. Plus often the authors put in fun little asides talking directly to the reader. Feels very personal.
With the light was such an important part of my high school years. I had discovered it at school and shared it with our anime club and it spread like wildfire and ended up being one of the inspirations for my friends starting a gsa club as well. Crazy good manga and great character development with the father too.
This is a great collection! It's funny, i always thought you gave off a vibe that I'd get along with you and this pretty much solidifies that lol. Personally have and enjoy most of these series
Literally almost every series I've picked up and am reading right now you covered in this video. I think the only ones you didn't were the ones that weren't released yet. But clearly we share very similar tastes so I will be following what you read and taking recommendations highly into consideration from you from now on.
Aww barakamon didn't make it on this list! I actually recommend the anime over the manga. The soundtrack and music takes it up to the next level for me and will always be a favorite.

I LOVE After the Rain! The anime was also fantastic. And speaking of that manga, the author has a new one serializing right now called Kowloon Generic Romance.
I loved his taste in anime, so when he shares his manga, I take them as strong recommendations. After the Rain sounded skeevy before, but he made it sound like something I'd like. I'll read it. If you're reading this, thanks for that!
The manga is 1000x better than the movie. I was honestly offended when I saw the movie. Lol. Then after researching it, I found out the movie was written in 84 and the manga was written from 82-94 so the vast majority was written after the movie (think 2003 fma)
I was hoping he’d have Monster but it’s nice to see other Urasawa series. I watched it on his recommendation and loved it - it really opened my eyes to what kind of story telling lies beyond the shounen and super popular stuff we always hear about. Thank you SungWon 🥺

coming in here before watching the whole video to say im at vol 6 of blue flag and it REALLY GOT ME .... i really enjoy how the characters communicate with each other. i /adore/ the convos between the kids and the adults. i also love how the story amplifies how adolescents navigate a world of acceptance and love.
It might be a bit of a struggle to keep it considering how long it is. I would know, they take up more than one shelf on my bookshelf, and my bookshelf is 8' wide.

A Bride's Story is such an amazing work. The artwork is unbelievably beautiful. You can truly see the love that she puts into every panel. Super interesting slice of life that I've never come into contact with before. Would definitely recommend. (Also all the characters are so lovable).
@@noorel-hawwat8894 yes they are the same, the anime is an excellent adaptation. what i was trying to say was that the story was more engaging as an anime with music and voice acting, it was also a lot more understandable and gave off the horrible vibes (in the best way possible) which the mangaka tried to accomplish in the manga. The whole story is just told better in anime form imo
Sungwon, have you read To Your Eternity? The anime just came out but the manga is really good, definitely has the sad but bittersweet but ultimately optimistic vibes you described in some of your faves. It makes really good commentary about loss and grieving.

I'm very surprised to see the title with the light. Not a lot of people I know read it either and all the manga choices were spot on with what's in my collection too! Slice of life is my favorite genre too.
Yotsuba being described as Japanese Calvin & Hobbes is the most spot-on thing. No wonder I enjoy the both of them. Also, prozd has excellent taste. Tons of good series in here 👌 other series I would recommend is "Tetsugaku letra" + "slow starter" by Ichikawa Kei + "hello melancholic" + "3 ban sen no campanella" + tagura tohru's "koimonogatari" + "boy meets maria." (Trigger warning for the last one but it's so heartfelt and well-written/drawn)
"With the Light" was a manga I resisted reading for a VERY long time, just expecting it to be a painful and bittersweet ride. It it 100% that, but it is also a manga filled with more love, forgiveness, and individual fortitude than anything else I've ever read. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The worst I've ever felt during a move is when I lost one of my volumes of Maison Ikkoku. Fortunately, it turned back up when I moved again.

Just bought the volume 1 to a bunch of my favorite manga last week to start my collection and waiting for it to arrive, perfect timing on the video. I really enjoy seeing other peoples collections and tastes :)
Yay, I've read all of the series you mentioned and I must say - you have excellent taste. One caveat about Golden Kamuy is the food scenes die down after awhile (you're close to reaching that point), but the charaterisation, educational tidbits, and humour are more than enough to hold it up.
You'll probably get a lot of recs, but if you want another great comedy series with an official English release and an anime adaptation, I'd highly suggest picking up Saint Young Men. I was iffy on trying it since I'm not religious myself, but Hiksru Nakamura has a knack for being able to make anything hilarious. Jesus x Buddha is a bromance I didn't believe possible before touching that series.
I have never read a single fucking manga page in my whole life, but your videos, for some mystical reason, calm me down. I watch each and every one of them... works like meditation, everytime. Deepest thank you, Sungwon.
Give it a try, esp if you already like anime! They forgo the sometimes drawn out filler nature of anime, and feel like a boiled down best version.
Plus often the authors put in fun little asides talking directly to the reader. Feels very personal.

With the light was such an important part of my high school years. I had discovered it at school and shared it with our anime club and it spread like wildfire and ended up being one of the inspirations for my friends starting a gsa club as well. Crazy good manga and great character development with the father too.
This is a great collection! It's funny, i always thought you gave off a vibe that I'd get along with you and this pretty much solidifies that lol. Personally have and enjoy most of these series

Literally almost every series I've picked up and am reading right now you covered in this video. I think the only ones you didn't were the ones that weren't released yet. But clearly we share very similar tastes so I will be following what you read and taking recommendations highly into consideration from you from now on.
Aww barakamon didn't make it on this list! I actually recommend the anime over the manga. The soundtrack and music takes it up to the next level for me and will always be a favorite.

The manga is 1000x better than the movie. I was honestly offended when I saw the movie. Lol. Then after researching it, I found out the movie was written in 84 and the manga was written from 82-94 so the vast majority was written after the movie (think 2003 fma)

coming in here before watching the whole video to say im at vol 6 of blue flag and it REALLY GOT ME .... i really enjoy how the characters communicate with each other. i /adore/ the convos between the kids and the adults. i also love how the story amplifies how adolescents navigate a world of acceptance and love.

A Bride's Story is such an amazing work. The artwork is unbelievably beautiful. You can truly see the love that she puts into every panel. Super interesting slice of life that I've never come into contact with before. Would definitely recommend. (Also all the characters are so lovable).

@@noorel-hawwat8894 yes they are the same, the anime is an excellent adaptation. what i was trying to say was that the story was more engaging as an anime with music and voice acting, it was also a lot more understandable and gave off the horrible vibes (in the best way possible) which the mangaka tried to accomplish in the manga. The whole story is just told better in anime form imo

Sungwon, have you read To Your Eternity? The anime just came out but the manga is really good, definitely has the sad but bittersweet but ultimately optimistic vibes you described in some of your faves. It makes really good commentary about loss and grieving.

Yotsuba being described as Japanese Calvin & Hobbes is the most spot-on thing. No wonder I enjoy the both of them. Also, prozd has excellent taste. Tons of good series in here 👌 other series I would recommend is "Tetsugaku letra" + "slow starter" by Ichikawa Kei + "hello melancholic" + "3 ban sen no campanella" + tagura tohru's "koimonogatari" + "boy meets maria." (Trigger warning for the last one but it's so heartfelt and well-written/drawn)

"With the Light" was a manga I resisted reading for a VERY long time, just expecting it to be a painful and bittersweet ride.
It it 100% that, but it is also a manga filled with more love, forgiveness, and individual fortitude than anything else I've ever read. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
