I daily a 97 prado with the 1KZ-TE and I absolutely love it. I plan on keeping this light-duty Landcruiser as long as I live. great video James EDIT: I fucking died laughing over the Buick encore comment, that's what my wife drives
I drive my prado lj95 1998 model daily too. I come from a fuel mileage conscious country where 90% of the diesel passenger cars are 1500cc and below so my prado with the 3L naturally aspirate idi diesel engine can keep up with highway traffic😅. Its a very capable vehicle in bad roads where i mostly drive on.
Great video. I imported a “97 Prado 3-door like yours last year and I love it. Of all the various JDM vehicles I’ve personally imported, this is my favorite and part of that is because of the great parts of interchangeability with vehicles sold in the US. (i’m tired of chasing parts from overseas). This Prado uses the same frame as the 3rd generation 4Runner. In fact, the front suspension is identical to the 4Runner. So super easy to get suspension parts anywhere. That also means it suffers from the same lower ball joint weakness of that generation 4Runner. The lower ball joints should be replaced as a safety measure with only OEM Toyota ones as a preventative measure. The Prado’s rear suspension is basically a Land Cruiser 80 series. So again, most rear suspension parts are available in the US. When I selected the Prado, I wanted to import I wanted to make sure the Prado I picked had an engine that could easily be serviced in the US. So I went with the gasoline 3RZ 2.7 4-cylinder engine because that was used in US market 4Runners and Tacomas. This gas engine actually produces more horsepower than the turbo diesel (but less torque). It’s not as powerful as the gas V6, but does get better gas mileage.
Great video! I currently am stationed in Japan and bought a J95 with 5fvz engine and slim body kit with roughly 60k miles. My family and I are enjoying going on trips and then we will take it back stateside with us after my tour!
Owned a bunch of 4Runners over the years, and currently own a 3rd gen and 5th gen now. I’ve wanted a J90 with a diesel for a long time. I often think about selling my 5th gen to buy a J90, but I know that’s a terrible idea… and also a great one.
I never realized just how much I could listen to someone being delighted about cup holders, but now I realize this is the content I need more of in lots of videos. I wish I had appreciated what I had and hadn’t wrecked it. I kick myself especially since I am doing more hunting and traveling. I’d love to have a souped up 80s, but I’m hunting for another 100 OR a 90s prado. I’m not doing serious off road stuff just getting in and out of mud when hunting.
Kinda lusted after one of this, since no 3 door G-wagen in my country. Thank god I got a new Jimny. No need to worry about maintenance, and looks better. For the J90, needs the right wheel design to make the car look nice.
Hey James, good luck with the new channel. If we had known you were in Ireland we would have organised some range days for you. Keep it in mind for next time and thanks for the presentations
@Jimports 210km i got it with 186k. I replaced the glow plugs when I first got it to help with cold starts. So far, it's been extremely reliable. I drive it every day with zero hiccups.
reminds me of my 3 door rav4! just bigger and more capable. You could probably import an awd 5 speed grey top beams(180hp) for cheap. Great car, goofy as hell and I think it will get more popular in the next decade.
Really enjoyed your discussion of the Shorty! But you may want to add something about the upper ball joint issue common to the 4Runner of the same era. Anyone buying a J9X should be aware of this significant issue.
I daily drive a manual 5VZ 3 Door in and around Seattle and the lowest MPGs I've gotten is 14.4 but overall I average right around 16.5 with 33inch tires and a 2 inch lift. Love it to death!
I have one of these in the 4 door for sale that I have rebuilt/refreshed the top end of the motor on, replaced turbo, overhauled cooling system and suspension on, sitting on 33" Yokohama MTs if anyone is interested in one that is turn-key ready for overlanding/daily driving/adventures/whatever you want!
Just FYI: EGR systems actually reduce combustion temps under normal operation (less available oxygen to burn in the cylinder). Heat buildup is only an issue when the engine is being overworked. If it were my car I'd install a full alloy radiator and a PCV oil/air separator. Also check out Total Chaos Fabrication for a solution to the lower ball joint issue!
Love the channel, used to own 85 FJ60 & currently have 77 FJ40 so I'm hooked....BTW the Jimports at the end makes me want to smoke a menthol for some reason 😅
We got the 1KZ-T here in the 4runner in the uk, no ecu, manual fuel pump, basically poverty spec but ironically more bulletproof😉I fitted it in my LJ78

I have the younger brother of the J90, the J120. 1KD-FTV diesel UK spec 201bhp 470nm torque and it has happily towed horse trailers up to 2800kgs all over the UK without issues.
I highly recomend you import it from Colombia (known as Sumo) and Venezuela(known as Merú), there we have really good units and have some adventadge like left hand drive (like in USA) and the engine is the old-known 3rz-fe like the tacomas and t100 that you have in the Unites States. Also, all of them have manual transmision and that´s a plus.
Capacitors usually go on the ecu around this age and they crack heads easily. 1kzte is quite zippy but the oil gets dirty instantly even with egr blocked
Head cracking is a known issue with the 1KZ-TE, but it’s often preventable. Deleting the EGR system early (before 100k km) helps a lot, as it reduces heat buildup that stresses the head. Intercooled models, like mine, are even less prone to this issue since the intercooler lowers intake temperatures and adds to overall engine durability. As for the ECU, capacitor failure is common on vehicles of this age, not just the 1KZ-TE trucks.
When you delete the EGR you increase EGTs at lower RPMs. On my 4M40T diesel Pajero 3 door I've decided against deleting the EGR but we will see how long that decision lasts
People endlessly bitching that the Prado wasn’t available in the U.S. Toyota finally brings it to the states and suddenly nobody cares. Is mentioning that you had emission control systems deleted a good idea??
The overheating issues you talk about relates to the oil and engine cooling system being integrated into one radiator. This is the J series achilles heel. Especially while towing. The oil from the gearbox literally boils the engine coolant when the vehicle is pushed hard, and this is what leads to cracked heads. Before you waste your time blanking the EGT, replace the radiator, even in a low mileage vehicle. It's common practice not to replace gearbox and coolant liquids, and this can lead to pitting and wear between the two systems resulting in coolant in your gearbox, and vica versa. The autos are not great tow vehicles! Some more interesting facts are that these were/are commonly used in Ireland because no respectable Irish farmer or fisherman would be seen dead in a British Land rover. Something to do with some 'troubles'? 😉 Alternatively they are cheap in the UK because of brand loyalty to LR. But their prices are steadily increasing as Brits realise their reliability. Something else worth mentioning is that they could be ordered with a rear diff lock, which makes them phenomenal off road vehicles, and arguably just as capable as a 70 Series. Otherwise I think they came with a LSD? Another few things worth mentioning is that an aftermarket suspension, like OME or Tough Dog, transforms the ride, and makes them more capable vehicles off road. And lastly and probably the jewel in their crown for fuel saving, is that they can easily be transformed into 'selective' 2x4's, because as you correctly mentioned, there are a lot of interchangeable parts with a Surf/Hilux/4Runner, by replacing the front knuckles with 1st gen Surf/4Runner manual locking units. I've looked into this but haven't done this myself, so stand corrected here? And lastly James, please don't mention Ravs in the same sentence. They are good for wet, icy roads, and don't stand up to the rigours of Outback or African bush trails. They are more akin to a Honda CR-V!
