My devoted Abyssinian is currently 18. He is dying of renal failure but with medication and special diet we have already extended his life by 2 years and counting ... Each "borrowed" moment with him is precious!! He also has arthritis but we started Rx monthly injection a few months ago and they have had an astoundingly positive impact on his quality of life! He is acting like a kitten again, now that he is virtually pain free!
I wish his vet could prescribe those injections for my arthritis!

Really need to specify that the average lifespan of cats who have outdoor access is tremendously shorter (like 2-5 years depending on location). If you want your cat to live a long life, KEEP THEM INDOORS.
You can provide an enriching indoor environment that keeps your cat just as happy as they would be outside but they’ll be healthier & safer.

    • @Kyarrix
      @Kyarrix ปีที่แล้ว +8

And if you can, you can build them a cat patio. An enclosed space that protects them and lets them experience the outside. I used to take my older cat out into our fenced-in yard on a leash. He loved it because he loved to sit in the warm sun.
And now I'm tearing up because it hasn't been a year since we lost him and I miss him. We are going to build a cat patio of some kind for our two 8-month-old kittens so they can have some outdoor access but safely. And always supervised.

@@Kyarrix "I used to take my older cat out into our fenced-in yard on a leash." I've seen this on other TH-cam vids, and it sounds like a great way to let your cat get some benefits of the outdoor experience without giving up the advantages of being an indoor cat.

I had an indoor outdoor cat when I was a kid and he lived to be 21 but I think it was mostly luck. For instance, he got hit by a car when he was 3. If he hadn't dragged himself home, he would have died. There were other emergencies over the years related to being outside.

. We have 4 Indoor neutered male cats that get along, but when catnip was sprinkled on the floor 1 of them just flipped out, All the hair on his tail stood up and he started to attack and bite the oldest cat. No more catnip for these cats ! Thanks again Dr.Sarah, your good spirit continues to radiate.

Our cat that we adopted from a shelter lived to 18. The vet at Cats Exclusive (local veterinary clinic that takes care of cats only) said that he was probably a Bombay mix and they tend to be longer lived.
When we first got him he was about 12 weeks old and we fed him what we believed was a good diet. Looking back I feel a lot of sadness and guilt because if I had known then to feed him wet food he might have lived longer. 18 years is good but we fed him high quality dry food for years because we just didn't know and that's what we were told to feed him. Now we do and our two cats get a diet of 90% high quality wet food (we would do 100% wet food but they love what they were fed at the shelter and we are working on weaning them off it).
The point of this is to say that 14 years is not a long lifespan for a cat. If you take good care of your cat, feed high quality wet food and *keep them inside* other than a cat patio, they will live longer. Sometimes much longer.

First off, I think you do an invaluable service for us cat lovers Sarah. You do a wonderful job with all your videos. Thank you for mentioning that cats can live beyond the average of 14 years as shelters have senior cats that too often get overlooked. I adopted a 15 year old shelter cat and she lived to almost 19. Her name was Hope and she gave me 4 of the best years of my life.

Sometimes my two cats (Russian Blues, a father and his son) are play-fighting... but one of them (the dad) gives this gnarly "mek!" sound and I see plucks of fur laying around -.-' But that same evening they share a chair, cuddle up, and sleep together. Is that normal?

Great tests using the hands! My father and I have been concerned about our cat Nico which we adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats home in London. He gets VERY hungry and eats 4-5 times a day which we were worried about as the standard is twice a day but after I did some research he does not have worms, he has not lost any hair (other than on a couple of ocassions fighting with a neighbour's cat) or suffers from lethargy. I apply worm pipets on the back of his neck every month.
We brought him into the family at a year and a quarter years old and he is actually quite slender in the middle yet muscular at the front. We let him out 2-3 times a day ( he stays out for about 2-3 hours at a time) but he wont play indoors for more than 5-10 minutes before he walks off unless it's with some catnip which I do not want to use everyday even though it's safe.
I know some cats want to be left alone indoors but before his initial 4 week cooling period of staying indoors was over he would be playing soo much. I would play with him for almost an hour sometimes. He would jump high trying to grab the string. It was soo much fun. But after the cooling off period we gradually let him outside and the more he went out the more he wanted to go out and the less he wanted to play indoors, which makes a lot of sense I guess. Far more to see and do outside.
He starts meowing when he can't go out at night and the reason is because we have 2 rather large foxes in the area. I hate having him cooped up when he wants to go out and am very conscious of his stress ( he has marked his territory 4 times because of it although he hasn't for a couple for months now) so all he can do is lie down or sleep. I know cats sleep a lot because of how cats absorb protein very slowly but I feel a little helpless as he has zero interest in toys and only plays with string and the scratching post if I rub catnip on them, that only lasts 10-15 mins.
Am I just a bad owner? Am I being too overprotective? Is there something I am missing? I have looked online to try to find ways to engage him more indoors to stimulate his mind but he looks at me like "bro! I love ya man but come on! You REALLY thought THAT would work?" lol
Soz for the long violin story. Love your channel : ]

Thanks Dr. I've been away for a while, nice to see you. I have a question is it normal for older cats ears, mine is 16, to produce more ear wax? Weird I never had to clean his ears till this year. He doesn't scratch them. What gives? This might be a good question for another video also. Take care and enjoy the holidays.

My grumpy old man lived to 20 years 11 months. He had multiple organs in and out of failure. We chose to give him mercy because he couldn't take medication, so we couldn't give him relief any other way. His sister died the year before from dental issues. Please fix cracked teeth even if it isn't bothering them yet.

One of my cats has some trauma from before I adopted her. She was so terrified of everything when I first got her that she was hiding at all times. You couldn't see her anywhere. That lasted for about 2-3 years. Then she started being a little more relaxed, and she now comes to me in the morning, purrs and requests pets. But she only comes when I am laying down. As soon as I am up on my feet, she is gone. Hiding. I've neve seen her kneed. She is getting better as the years pass, but she has been with me for almost 5 years now. She was about 6 months when I got her. Has anyone had any similar experiences? I've tried doing everything that's in my power to her feel more comfortable, including buying those wall flower plugs for cat comfort, etc, but nothing works with her 😥

Dr. Sarah. Thank you for this informative video. I have a question regarding the safest floor cleaner to use. I would like to get a kitten an am concerned about using a floor disinfectant. Also we had a cat mark his territory a while back. Can this kitten pick up on that scent? I will use a black light to try and find any residual areas and use an enzyme cleaner. Thank you again- Diane

Hey Diane, your kitten may be able to detect the older cat's scent, and it sounds like you have the right idea with the black light and enzyme cleaner. Regarding the floor disinfectant, you might want to try Odoban's No Rinse Neutral pH floor cleaner: www.chewy.com/odoban-no-rinse-neutral-ph-floor/dp/196356

As a new cat parent, I have found your videos quite informative and helpful! I did have one question that I was wondering about. My cat absolutely will not drink water from her dish. I've tried tap water, bottled water, lukewarm, ice cold, and everything in between. She will however, lap at the bathroom tap whenever it's turned on. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but my landlord pays the water bill and I don't want him getting upset because I leave the faucet dripping constantly so my cat can have water, plus it's wasteful for me to leave it on, even at a trickle. Are there any solutions you can recommend? I just want to make sure she's getting the water she needs. Thanks in advance!

Quick question cause I don't know anyone to ask or any money to afford a checkup or smthn, so we have a 3yr old cat who grew up without a playmate, and was separated from her mother at very young age, and now my mom decided to take in a very young kitten who looks so defenseless, now I read some stuff online that we should separate stuffs for each of the cats like litter box, food bowl and such but my mom just wont listen to me, and i noticed that when they play the kitten would often scream like how our 3 yr cat screams when someone from our house step on her (besides me ofc im always aware) so should i worry about the small kitten getting hurt from the older cat's bites ?? is there any chance that small kitty could die if i dont interfere and separate them or should i just let them do their thing??
