    I watched this video some weeks before my exam because Use of English was the only part that made me struggle a lot.

    Great lesson, Anu! Yes, it is definitely the most challenging part of the Reading and Use of English exam. The strategies you demonstrated are really helpful. And you're absolutely right, it works, and the process gets quicker the mosre students practise following the steps. Keep up the great work :) - Marcus

      Hi Charlotte, everyone works at their own pace so don't compare yourself to anyone else! Nerves are completely normal. I would practise a little bit of English everyday and do some exam questions to prepare. Remember, it is just an exam - if you do not pass, you can do it again! Good luck!

    I just have a question. I do it in class to practice, and sometimes I put something that makes sense (my teacher says it does, and once she said it was even richer than the answer) but it wasn't the correct sentence even though it made a lot of sense. How do I do to make sure I put the expected phrase?

    • @EnglishToPass
      @EnglishToPass  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually, this is not possible as the answer needs to be exactly the same in meaning to the original sentence. Your answer could be wrong and make sense - but this means it doesn't have the same meaning! :) Focus on the meaning! Hope this helps!

    In the first example I've put "if she has booked" but it's wrong. In the second one I've put "if he had recovered" and is still wrong. Which rule I have to follow to know the correct structure? Thank a lot
    ‘Did you book a room with a balcony?’ I asked my mother.
    IF
    I asked my mother ------- a room with a balcony.
    [IF SHE HAD BOOKED]
    'Are you feeling well enough now for a little walk, Joe?' asked his mother.
    RECOVERED
    Joe's mother asked him ------ enough for a little walk
    [IF HE HAS RECOVERED]

    • @EnglishToPass
      @EnglishToPass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, the first one is a classic example of reported speech where you must change present tenses to the past and the past to the past perfect. The action in the question is also complete so there is no flexibility here.
      However, the answer to the second one is debatable. Usually, your answer would be correct. The use of 'now' in the original sentence changes the rule. This website has some examples for this: learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/grammar/intermediate-grammar/reported-speech

    Why we have "their" instead of "they" in the second example? And why isn't there *they failure to reduce "?

    • @EnglishToPass
      @EnglishToPass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After the preposition 'of', we need to use a noun. The word 'failure' is a noun. We need to show that the failure belonged to the politicians. So, the only word possible before it is 'their'. I hope this helps!

    can there not be more than one correct answer ??

    • @EnglishToPass
      @EnglishToPass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually there isn't - unless it is a contraction or two answers with minimal difference in meaning. Hope this helps!

      English To Pass thnx for your answer. Can i give you an example ?:1. I will see to it that the goods are delivered immediately. I wrote I will arrange it so that you are immediately delivered the goods.and got one point 2.He said he had nothing to do with causing the accident. I wrote He refused to take the blame for causing the accident. and still got one mark

      @@air_bill23onig88 To tell you if your answer is correct, I will need to see the original sentence, the key word given and the incomplete sentence. Sometimes there is more than one way to say the same thing but the restrictions of the exam only allow particular answers.

      English To Pass I’m currently on the C2 level.Is there any way that the examiners mark your answer as incorrect if it is not formal enough for someone’s level

    it is unlikely that anyone will answer this question, but what if I had written "their complete failure OF REDUCING"?

    • @EnglishToPass
      @EnglishToPass  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, this collocation cannot be changed.
      failure to do sth = not do sth
      Have a look at the following link for more examples from the Cambridge dictionary.
      dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/failure?q=failure+to+do+sth
      Hope this helps!

    I've got a question. Would also fit: The politicians lost the election because of their failed reduce of unemployment? Many thanks for your respond :)

    • @EnglishToPass

      'Failed reduction' is not a collocation in English. The most natural response would be to use 'failure to do sth' here. Hope this helps!

    Why not: "because of their complete failure in reducing unemployment"?

    • @EnglishToPass
      @EnglishToPass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately that is incorrect. The structure 'failure to + bare infinitive' is idiomatic. You will see this in many official documents / signs. Here is an example I noticed when I was travelling recently in Singapore: No duty-free cigarettes allowed. Failure to declare is an offence.

    But, can we say? "The politicians lost the election because of *their failure at reducing the* unemployment"

      Good question - unfortunately not! The structure 'failure to + reduce' here is idiomatic. You will see this in many official documents / signs. Here is an example I noticed when I was travelling recently in Singapore: No duty-free cigarettes allowed. Failure to declare is an offence.
