I am on the homosexual side of the Kinsey scale, and I have done a lot of thinking about why people are homophobic; the only definitive reason I have ever come up with is exactly this! There is no reason to harbor so much hate for something that literally has no effect on you...unless it really does have an effect on you, i.e one must have secret, repressed, and confusing homosexual desires in order to have so much hate towards homosexuals. Otherwise, why does it matter at all in any way what other people do if they're not hurting anybody else? Glad to know science agrees. I wish there was a way to help these people, for them and for the sake of my people.
So Hank dose the consumer bit mean I should skip all the adds before your videos?
JK, I let the adds play before your videos so you guys get payed.
Was just about to ask for the references, but then i saw you put them in the description. well done!
You're channel is so educational and I really like that you reference the documents where you got your information! (This is how I'm spending my spring break, teaching myself science-y stuff ^.^)
Easy there, Hank. Depressed, isolated weirdos are a good chunk of your audience.
😂😂😂😂Of course zero argument and just insult. Just admit you dont know sht. You a dum dum boo.
Good god how many channels do the green brothers have
Many.
Hey, they have to make money too. They spend all day making videos. That's their business. Seeing as they only get a tiny fraction of a cent for each view by people who don't use ad blockers, that's all they make. Seeing as they start out getting NO benefits, no social security, zip, just youtube income. Few can make it. Apparently, the Greens, can. More power to them.
Thank you for spreading awareness Hank.
BRILLIANT!!!!! Brilliant reasoning, brilliantly and concisely put, thank you. I agree entirely with every nuance of that comment.
Don't just watch less TV - watch less advertising.
That was easy before TH-cam became sell outs.
I recall seeing significantly less advertisements in Europe (Ireland, Germany, Italy). The ads were only in between shows, and only advertised other shows on the same network... no cars, foods, websites, and (enjoyably) no medicine ads. Likely related, European countries like Denmark and Finland are always ranked highest in the world in terms of happiness. I know there are other factors that contribute, such as stability, low crime rates, strong social security programs, etc, but I believe at least some of it can be linked to the freedom from incessant advertising.
I remember taking that study and realizing how poor I am. Thanks Kellogg
You put this perfectly. Thank you!!
best scishow yet!
Alright listen, I admit I am a homophobe, (I apologize to any gay people I may have offended by admitting this), but I have no hatred of any gay people. I would like to remind you all that Homophobia is the fear of homosexuals, not the hatred. I do assert my straightness more than a normal guy may do, but thats just because I like women, their great! Aha. Also, I was not raised in a household that hates gay people or that fear them, and I don't have attraction to the other gender. So this study is kind of untrue. The whole point of this comment was to just explain that there is a difference between Homophobia and hating gays. If you are going to reply to this comment please do so in a respectful manner, and I will return the courtesy.
***** During my life I've had some bad experiences which sort of pushed me into feeling scared of them. Well for instance there is Clourophobia, (the fear of clowns). People don't just randomly become scared of these things, they are because they have had some bad experiences with them in their past, that's what they've been taught, or they became scared simply because others around them were scared of them. Both fears happen through one, or a combination of these 3 ways that I listed. And finally, I would just like to thank you for being respectful, I was actually expecting somebody to comment back and tear me a new one :P
Yeah I know and I do feel bad about that, I cant help it though honestly. If I couldn't be scared of gay people hell I wouldn't be. Yeah I do understand, I don't know how or why it happens, it just does. I know you aren't and I thank you very much for that you've been an awesome person eh.
I was thinking that the statements they made were blanket statements. Which surprised me considering science in general considers more factors when conducting an experiement. I know people who are only homophobic because they don't understand the gay community that well and like anything you don't understand you are going to avoid or be cautious about. I didn't hear them make that argument at all. I have friends who are gay and bi and such but also have fairly homophobic friends. I don't think either group is truly represented properly in the video, not even scientifically.
*****
Sometimes it is hard to understand someone else with a phobia. Their experiences might have been live threatening or just very scary causing them to have a newfound phobia. It may be very difficult to understand them, but before I judge anyone due to their fears, I would put myself in their shoes to be less rude and more understanding. If you have judgement of someone, you gotta learn how to be on their side a little even though you feel not right about it. eventually, You might even start to compensate with him
***** Not only is the study untrue because of that, there is no scientific evidence. Watching a car crash is the same thing. If something takes your attention away from something normal you look at it more. And when asked if someone is straight or gay how do you know that it's not because someone doesn't want to be seen in a negative connotation so badly that they answer more quickly. I'm not necessarily saying that this isn't true with everyone that has done the study is hiding gayness but that doesn't mean that everyone in this study that "failed" it were gay.
Thanks. It seems as though everyone has been blinded by hate. It's good to see someone who has sense.
It gives me hope.
:)
Agreed. I use the ad time to go get a drink or snack from time to time. It's a nice break for me, and it's good for the content creator.
I'm sorry that I don't comment on every of your video becouse I am lazy but I have liked every single video and watched every single video that you guys have made.
ty for making me smarter
I got ridiculously excited about seeing Stephen Jay Gould's name in the background.
keep making the great videos man love it DFTBA
Hank is great!!!
this may not be tv but that doesn't stop the ads.
+Joe Blow funny thing is that they get money based on views ONLY when the ads are present. Google makes x amount of money per view, and they give the video it was viewed on a share of it. No ads = no income for either google or the authors
I have the same desk and shelf set that Hank has!!!!!!
thank you for typing all that out for me, i had the exact same thought
That is something that you and I can definitely agree on.
Maybe you've already made a video about this and I just can't find it, but I would like to see a video about depression. How it occurs and past, present, and future possibilities on how to treat it.
Hey, the link for the references of this episode doesn't work anymore, which is sad because I'd like to click it and get somewhere.
I spent a good couple hours watching and liking these videos ^_^
Thank you
Agreed, you are 100% right.
Thank you sir, you saved a few precious minutes of my time :P
I agree that one should watch less TV. However, it would also help if there were far fewer commercial breaks during shows and movies aired on TV. And fewer ads before TH-cam videos. People come to watch videos not ads!
Hank, Very insightful. You might be interested to know that Frank Zappa said essentially the same things decades ago.
I always thought you were worth listening to. This video reconfirms that my judgement in unbiased knowledge. My knowledge remains apart of yours...g'day
Stay away was from TV to avoid consumerism, watch this not like there is an ad right before.
I myself try to express my opinion sometimes, when an opportunity arises and I feel like I shouldn't keep it bottled up inside. And then, an avalanche of hate falls over me, leaving me questioning myself if everyone has gone mad. I'm so frustrated of how things have become recently. In the past it had been prohibited, punishable and treated, as a disease should be. Nowadays they praise it like some kind of Nobel Prize worthy achievement.
I spit on everyone who supports it!
Thanks for demonstrating how when you have no basis for argument, you have to resort to attack. But, that's okay. Frustration is often the mind's way of dealing with complex truths.
thanks for making this video, i wish it delved better into consumerism, i find it hard to believe that the euphoria of consuming things would make one more inclined towards depressive circumstances and behaviors. I wish also that the video had more persuasion and and a clearer presentation of the homophobic data stuffs.
That is beautiful
Couldn't agree more.
Amen, at last someone who shares my opinion here.
I like his shirt!
im just using adblock to block the ads in the videos. i don't care about ads on the sides (there is a lot of room) but in the video's i'll just go block them. when im listening to music on youtube i don't want my playlist being interrupted by some ad
I think that Scishow should do a video on depression.
Will you ever have ads on your channel?
Ha I have officially watched all 199 of Hank's videos from this channel.
Ooh! Another orientation I've never knew about. I'm of the same mind with you on some aspects, but I'm a live-let-live kind of person in regards to sex (just don't talk to me about it so openly). Either way, good on ya for sharing; this guy's in need of a 'kickman' in the head.
Exactly. It's realising something about yourself. Not making a decision.
It is not a need, but it is a very useful edit.
# best channel on youtube
Jung's Shadow. That's the name for what you describe. Jung was a student of Sigmund Freud.
I see you have a Carl Sagan book on your bookshelf there!
Homophobia and it's relationship to latent homosexuality has also been studied by subjecting participants to both gay and straight pornography, with self-reports used to be compared to penile strain gauge measurements of arousal. If only I could remember where I found that brilliant study and/or could find it online... Interesting stuff all the same.
Ooh, my turn! I love "show the comment" journeys!
I saw a video by hank a few months back about gender sex and orientation and the binary system and was wondering if you could point me in the direction to find it please?????
That's funny because something very similar to that was just recently said by several public officials and its not exactly making headlines.
There's a Carl Sagan book on the shelf in the upper right corner :D
For the sake of self-improvement (since English isn't my mother-tongue).. Which sentence is wrong?
I always wondered why certain people are so concerned with the sexual practices of groups that they say they have a problem with: this first study would explain a lot.
I would say watch less advertisements. I do my best to cut those out where ever possible because I feel they are harmful to my psyche. I only watch tv shows i like by getting them from the internet in one form or another sans adds, and spend most of my viewing time watching nerdy stuff like this, again sans adds via my add blocking software. Sorry Scishow, but that's just the way I feel. Love the channel! :)
As I straight person, I can honestly say that "being straight" was not "a choice" I made. My interest in and attraction to females was innate, instinctual and intense from the very first moments I became "sexually aware" onward. My theory (respectfully) is that individuals who vehemently claim that "it is a decision" or "you decided" to be gay... are making it crystal clear to the rest of us that they are in fact deeply closeted homosexuals themselves. You, sir, have my sincerest sympathies. =(
People take up any behavior for whatever purpose suits them (people do what works). But they don't have to. A feeling is transient and temporary, and never an excuse for one's actions. When did I "decide?" Each and every day.
Was pretty much in the same spot until I got a 3G tablet.
But then I read a lot about new technologies and probably would fit for a consumer label...
i like that shirt, what kind of shirt is that?
No. Immorality always leads to other calamities.
What Augustine noted was how success breeds comfort into a society, which in turn leads people to believe that only a select few need actually be virtuous in order to maintain the empire. Hence, the debauchery Rome would become legendary for in the wake of the fall of Carthage. Hence how, 400 years after Carthage's fall, Roman citizens did nothing to stop the advance of Barbarians they thought would undermine their civilization.
Short comment: Nice video Hank!
Genes can and sometime do 2 things, for example the gene known as HbS is responsible for causing sickle cell disease and also prevents malaria. So people who have a tolerance to malaria in a high malaria area then they would procreate more and pass this gene on, in this environment that gene, even though it carries the sickle cell disease, is a beneficial trait.
I wish I this was a TV show.
use showers, right? Or electricity? Or ovens? or microwave? etc, etc.
The more people use ad block the more sites will have to take more drastic measures compensate. Ads pay for the upkeep and improvement of the sites they're on, not to annoy people. without ads I see one of two possibilities
A) All the pages become subscription based.
B) Only web pages that have funding from other sources and have profit to gain from the web page (such as campaigns) get funded. This would effectively destroy the freedom of speech that the internet offers.
All behavior is a choice, and no feeling is justification for anything you do. If you sit around moping because you feel bad, what you need to do is re-examine yourself, stop feeling bad, and do something else. Depression may have official clinical implications, but in truth I've not met one person diagnosed with depression who truly needed drugs to recover from it. What they needed was to do something else that doesn't foster that mood. Moods are not permanent. They are always transitory.
Interesting video, scishow! It's so amusing to see such conflicting opinions clashing in an argument which neither will win. This is really interesting to observe how people interact. If they are different, they lash out. Of they are similar, but taught to hate a certain aspects of themselves, then they will lash out as well. I find it interesting that I was brought up in a homophobic home, but i do not think that gays are treated fairly. Either way, I want another vid!
What is this tv you speak of
?
When we left college about 4 years ago my husband and got rid of our tv. It's so nice :)
Protection and stability are the reasons love exist, if we put us back a few thousand years back, it would have been inconceivable for a woman to survive her 9 month pregnancy and the few years later taking care of a baby if she had to hunt her own food and construct her own shelter. That why we have this linking bond called love, it's only there cuz our gestation is so long and our baby are so fragile compared to others species.
Maxx i luv u
You'll note that I didn't ask you what the difference was between the four factors (I'll answer those statements anyway) but what is the difference between subscribing to other bigoted beliefs. While it is clear on cannot determine ones sex, race or ability, evidence indicates that sexuality also is beyond human control. Even the proponents of conversion therapy now view it as a condition/disease that one copes with daily like alcoholism. You don't become straight, you merely behave that way.
that flower behind him...
and besides i watch scishow because it fucking kicks ass. love it.
I understand things perfectly. I don't hate people who choose homosexuality any more than I hate anyone who's an alcoholic. But it's interesting that you mention that, because, you see, you have to believe that in order to shut down the argument, since you can't refute it.
I'm supposed to be doing my homework but I'm distracted by your awesome.
agreed
No, EPIC is right - alcoholism typically doesn't change. A person who was once an alcoholic has to battle every day not to drink because he/she knows that just one drink will be the end for him/her. (One of the principle characteristics of alcoholism is that they CAN'T stop at one drink.) There are a multitude of both personal and scientific accounts on this particular subject.
The correct viewpoint on this discussion happens to be mine. If you are validating your emotions by feeling bad for some reason, that's your problem, and you need to deal with it.
All sexual behavior is a choice, it's just that so many are doing everything they can to avoid shame, stigma, whatever in order to feel better about themselves, rather than address their feelings like Humans and not give into everything just because they feel this way or that. Because that's what animals do.
So I can keep watching Scishow? Why is that? I don't generally watch TV, but I'm wondering what makes scishow okay to watch.
They were born with the ability to choose and they chose something that is truly wrong. It is never right to hate them or anyone but negative actions cannot be tolerated or 'accepted'.
When viewed from an evolutionary standpoint, you're right. But think of it this way: What is the purpose of love? The answer is to encourage people to settle down and mate. But nowadays we don't always fall in love for procreation. We fall in love because we want to be around that person, despite whether or not we have children or even sex. If you fall in love just to pass on your genetic material, then you need to get with the times.
completely unrelated, unlike most youtube videos, the transcribed captions for this video were pretty accurate.
I'm not sure if this reply was meant for me as you had already replied to this statement and I, in turn, had replied to that one. I know you get multiple replies on this thread but if you look closely you can see who wrote what and when.
Lots of people have done so.
And which family in the Westboro Baptist Church were you a member of?
Who needs Twilight when we got SciShow?!
"But This is not TV, so you can keep watching this all you want!" haha.
Just curious, do you have any reason for thinking that homosexuality is wrong outside of religious teachings?
0:48
In other words: most of our problems come from insecurity.
Yep, most people already knew that, and the research just backs it up ;)
Nero? I'd never heard that he was!
No I am aware of how clear I was and you know what I meant by it. But when someone like yourself makes it seem like you don't know what I meant but you do know it is very frustrating. If you want to argue productively don't play dumb.
According to the The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is. You can disagree all you want, but it's generally considered a human right. And no it has not always had a specific definition. Sometimes it's included one man and woman, other times it's been one man and a ten women. Sometime's it's been for religion, other times for politics. There are even examples of gay marriage in history. It has a different meaning for different cultures, and continues to evolve as we do.
but youtube has adds so it really doesnt stop us from being consumers
Yes, you can. Try it.
Such exceptions would be the fact that
A) Sexual attraction does not dictate romantic attraction.
B) Romantic attraction does not always follow the same principles as sexual attraction.
This allows for further deviations, such as a homoromantic pansexual who can be attracted to any gender but flat-out prefers their gender equivalent for emotional/romantic endeavours.
While this is a rarity - as most people have romantic interests matching their sexual ones - it stills occurs.
