Jochem Senior project: Modelling the E/I Balance of Human Neuronal Cultures

Jochem's senior project involves creating a model of neuronal cultures. He majored in Physics, Mathematics, and Cognitive Science at UCR, but his Senior project is more in the field of Mathematics and Physics than it is in Cognitive Science.
Jochem got into contact with the Computational Neuroscience Group at the University of Amsterdam led by Dr. Jorge Mejias who generously offered him to join in one of his projects with the Synaptic Computation Lab at the Centre of Neuro Genomics and Cognitive Research led by Niels Cornelisse.
His work on his senior project mostly involves programming for this model, playing around with some parameters to get a good feel for it, having meetings with his external supervisor Dr. Jorge Mejias through Zoom, and having biweekly meetings with Dr. Richard van den Doel, who is a Professor in Mathematics and his supervisor at UCR. He would like to follow a research-orientated program after UCR and then maybe pursue a career in academia.
