- Plovdiv, Bulgaria - Being the oldest city in all of Europe, Plovdiv is a living archaeological city that surprises all its visitors. Every street corner, you are met with some incredible, thousand-year old ruins that will take you back to the Greek and Roman Empires. Yet, this city goes so unnoticed but it has been designated as a European Capital of Culture. In this video, we explore the incredible city of Plovdiv to get an idea of how old this city truly is. From its Ottoman mosques to its ancient mosaics, Plovdiv is truly one of the most incredible cities in the world!

Philippopolis is actially named after Philip the father of Alexander the Great. But before the Greek epoch it had been part of one the ancient Tracian kingdom of the Odrissi. The earliest settelment dates from 5-6000 years BC. So we're talking thousands of years not hundreds. Glad you enjoyed our fantastic city of Plovdiv.
The fountains are singing and dancing in the rhythm of the music Friday to Sunday at 9:30 pm.
The architecture in the old town of Plovdiv is actually Bulgarian Revival Period Architecture. What is specific is that the second of third floors of the buildings are wider then the first floor. The ottomans would collect taxes based on the size of the first floor. So, the bulgarian would build small first floor and wider upper floors. Then don't like paying taxes :))).
Finaly , Plovdiv no matter what period you check , we are Thracians ! But before all we are Bulgarians !

FYI, the oldest city in Europe and one of the oldest in the world is Argos in Greece, which has been inhabited for the past 7000 years.
That is disputed. Recorded history for Argos started in 2nd millennium BC. So it's not possible to confirm that Argos is 7000 years old. But the history of Plovdiv is recorded and it is confirmed that it's 6000 years old.
