  • I go on a short 3 day trip to Rosebary Lake in Algonquin Park via the Tim Lake Access Point. Tim River is quite twisty at points and there's a few beaver dams that need to be navigated. I got to test out my new Campfire Tent, a tent favoured by canoeing legend Bill Mason. The weather was perfect for all 3 days.

    Thanks for sharing your trip! It was great! We stayed on that site earlier this year and loved every minute of it. We were hit with constant wind into our site which was great for keeping the bugs out. That metal piece was useful for putting in front of the fire pit to block the incoming wind from fanning out the fire

I really do love that tent as well and had hoped to get out in the shoulder season with the stove. I’m hoping it will work for winter as well. Not as air tight as a snowtrekker but better than cold camping which I have done.

    being in the states and never have been to this area, it must be a HUGE park. Everyone almost always says they rarely see other people but then you look on youtube and there are hoards of folks with videos from this park.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a huge park (2955 square miles) but it depends on where and when you go as to how busy it is. There is a highway through the lower part of the park and this is where is is busiest. As well, July and August are very busy with vacationers, camps etc in the park. If you go up the west side or in from the north however, it is much less travelled and if you go in the spring or fall you are fall less likely to see people.

    Hey Larry, Great video. I love this part of the park (access points 2 & 3) are my fav's. I'm pretty sure I was at that site last year during my 10 day trip. Amazed at how low the water level was compared to last year, but last year was a wet one.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jason Eke it looks like a lake that could rise and fall a lot with the rain so that wouldn’t surprise me. The Tim river was fine and it’s been known to be trouble if the water is too low as you probably know. Thanks for watching Jason and hope to see you out again soon!

      Yeah, with the water level so high last year I decided to tackle the full length of the Tim to Big Trout... a very twisty couple of days. Btw, thanks for showing your new tent set up. I've been curious about that style of tent for a while.

    Welcome back! I've taken a hiatus from posting as well. The fire tent would work for base camping. Hard to say how it would do in high winds. From my own experience canoe camping on the Canadian Shield it's well, rocky. I traveled with someone who used a tarp tent. You can't put it just anywhere. Funny thing, but he always got the prime camping sites. Hahaha! Very clever plan. :) Love fall camping but the company I work for changed our vacation policy and I have to take all but 40 hours prior to Sept. 10. No bueno.

    • @LarryHyett
      @LarryHyett  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to hear from you! I think the tent would be good for base camping for sure, but also for expeditions where you're going to be out for quite a while and comfort is important. I think this set up could withstand weather - there's many different ways to pitch it so batten it down for heavy winds and rain. If I am going on the usual week or less trip where there's a lot of portaging I think I'll go with the hammock. It's so comfortable and easy to get in and out of.

    Hi Larry! Good to see you back on the water. The new tent looks pretty sharp. I like the white... cool and bright. Those were some sweet still waters you were paddling. That sounds like an awesome wolf howl experience. Hearing them out there in the quiet is hair raising! Does your mic have an indicator light telling you its active?... thats the only thing saving me from forgetting. Your camera seems to be hunting focus a fair bit... do you have a lock feature for the focus? My new cam has a little button on the touch screen to pause auto focus once its where you want. I had some learning to do, but now that I have some experience with it, I think it will be great for certain types of trips. It is heavy, so anything really portage heavy may not be what I'd use it for. On the other hand, it is very suited to just about any kind of weather and you can stay comfortable without getting wet or cold.If I were going on a really long trip I think this might be the way to go though.
