Great video Davie and very helpful thanks pal. Would the same procedure be used for micro barbed cock saddle hackles or is there anything i should be cautious of doing smaller finer feathers? Hi carlo boni, It may not have dried out completely or you may have had it in the pot too long and it's went really soft..If you feel this is going to happen just allow the tail to dry out naturally after dying as the less you touch it the better...I'm glad you liked the videos.. All the very best Davie
Hi Steven, I have tried bleaching once and the mess I made put me off so I've never had a go at it again..I'm glad you enjoyed the video... All the very best Davie
hey davie, ty so much for showing me, how you dy the feathers. i have darkbleu ostrich large plumes. i wonder if i can dy them to. if so, with what did you dy with? is it like a fabric dy, u use? im from holland so i hope i can find it here to! regards sophianne
Hi Davie I have been tying flies for about 4 years now and i want to start dying my own feathers, i want to dye a grizzle cock cape olive is this the same process as in the video? Also i would like to thank you for all your videos they have helped me loads with patterns and techniques. Especially the bug bond its great stuff!. Cheers Richie, Newcastle
Davie have you done a video on picric acid? It is hard to find the materials dyed with this so was thinking about doing it myself. Could you point me in the right direction by chance?
Hi Kerry, I've never worked with picric though I have had some materials that have been stained with it, though I have to be honest I don't really use it in my flies.. All the very best Davie
Thanks David, great stuff. I've been trying to dye marabou feathers with Iron Oxide but so far no success, do I have to boil it or just bring it to heat? Why did you mix the vinegar? Tight lines!
Hi marcodsv, I am sorry I've never tried to dye anything with Iron Oxide so I can't help you there though when I use the Veniard dyes I set the colour using vinegar as they are acid based...I'm glad you enjoyed the video... All the very best Davie
Davie, Im currently Dying an old rubbish white cape Highlander Green but it seems to have got to a point then stopped colouring. I washed them in a Washing Powder and used brown vinigar, does this make a difference? Im scared to move onto the Artic Runner fur that i want to dye later as im using the cape as an experiment. I noticed that you said it may take DAYS?!? I've got no chance of being allowed to keep the gas cooker on for days! Can you offer any assistance? Thanks, ~David
Hi David! Great video thanks for helping me with how to dye, I'm trying to dye some feathers for masks I'm making, but I have a question before I get started, what kind of dyes are you using? Are you using acid based dyes, like I could get to dye fabrics? I'm assuming it should be alright as it can leave colour on wool etc, but I wanted to ask first before I thew some money at this.
Hi Davie, Excellent clip. I was wondering how long the process took please? Have you ever dyed a Cock Pheasant saddle hackle (Mrs Simpson feathers) as I am thinking about dying a Grizzle saddle hackle and the Pheasant an olive but are very uncertain. When you say e-mail link do you mean in the youtube inbox? Thank you for your help.
Hi Davie Could you please tell me where to get the strung hackles especially the badger? I have searched online for veniard strung hackles but had no luck. I'd like to try dying different colours for the cascades and parks shrimp. Would these strung hackles still do for the smaller doubles too like 9s and 11s salars? Your videos really are such a big help, look forward to each one. Many thanks. Alan.
Morning Stephen, Sometimes I do a hair conditioner rather than a fabric as it will soften and bring back the natural feel of the feathers, I especially do this when dyeing black as the feathers need a lot more time in the dye so they can suffer a bit...I do dye capes as well but all I do is give the cape a good wash before I dye it due to the skin being greasy and after dyeing you will have to have something like kitchen roll to soak it up until it dries completely.. All the very best Davie..
Hi davie have you got any tips for dying feathers primrose no one seems to have a dye close to the colour could you possibly recommend a blend of dye colours to get the best result thanks
Hi A5h13yK93-FTWPS4, I would use a regular yellow dye to get a primrose but you would have to experiment to get the shade right...Primrose is quite a pale yellow so watch how much dye you put in..What are you trying to dye? All the vest Davie...
@@DavieMcPhail hi davie thanks for the advice its much appreciated im trying to dye starling wing feathers to form the wings of a yellow sally clydestyle fly i was reading john reids book on tying clydestyles and thought id give it a go also could you possibly tell me where you get your bronze peacock herl or how you prepare it thanks.
Davie you say theres nothing worse then dye on your fingers what about colour run on other flies 😂 boils my blood, great video yet again davie, Thanks Jay
Hi Gary, Dyeing a natural ginger or brown cape yellow is my favourite way to get a golden olive or I'll just use Veniards golden olive... All the very best Davie
Hey Davie, Just me again, I got some blood marabou feathers, and as you said, the dye is getting all over my hands! Is it too late to rinse them and let them dry? I don't want to ruin them, but if I get as angry about my black fingers, that I couldn't get off for awhile, meaning no tying, I am apt to throw them out. Problem is, I have to buy them again and might buy the same problem. Thanks Sean
Awesome vid as always Davie. I have a question, Can you re dye feathers if you are not happy with the first attempt? Think I mayY have added a tad to much of the fl red and wanted it to come out a bit more like a light olive color. Many thanks Mike.
Hi Mark, If the dye hasn't set well then it may wash back so that you can try it again but if this doesn't work you can try and bleach it back a little but it can cause the fibres to get a bit dry and brittle..I've done this myself many a time so I just dye them a darker colour like black and claret...I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for the kind words All the very best Davie
Hi Davie, Thank you for the excellent videos regarding the dyeing of feathers.I have also been keenly dyeing my own materials for a while now, with some success. I have recently purchased AK Best's book - Dyeing and Bleaching Natural Fly Tying Materials, and I noticed that he suggests adding the vinegar to the dye bath at the start of the process prior to adding the material. My understanding was that the vinegar acts as a setting agent so that the materials are colourfast, however in your video's you add the vinegar add the end of the dyeing process once the material has acquired the desired colour. My question is this;Does the addition of the vinegar halt the colour being taken up into the material, if so why would he add it at the beginning ?or is the time at which the vinegar is added irrelevant, as it merely acts to set the dye ?Hope I have put this across clearly. Best wishes and thanks again for the dyeing videos. There is not too much stuff out there on the internet about dyeing so it was greatly appreciated. Also, do you plan to do any videos on bleaching/colour removal ?RegardsLindsay
Hi Lindsay, I'm sorry about the delay in getting back to you...I've tried many different ways of dyeing materials and I have added the vinegar in before and after but found them to be much the same but I always like to allow the dye to soak through first then add the vinegar especially with dense fur and hen like feathers..I have also used other agents to set the dye but you have to watch what you are doing but thats another story...AK Best's book is a very good one and I would certainly use this as a guide though most of what I have learnt is simply by trial and error over many years, the other thing you have to watch out for is that dyes do change over time so you have to adapt to suit them..I hope this helps you in some way... All the very best Davie...
David it seems to me you are very good at this. Would you pleaseeeeee explaing how to dye peacock feathers. Actually I like to bleach them to Ivory color...How to do that.
Hi Rachael, I have dyed a few pheasant tails over the years sunburst and I have tyed a few flies with it from small pheasant tails to large Mayfly's which I'll use for tails and for the body..I'm glad you liked the video and thank you for the kind comments.... All the very best Davie
Davie McPhail sorry Davie just another quick question. See when I'm finished and I have the left over mix of dye and vinegar can it be recycled if I was I put it onto plastic bottles to use another day? Or would that not work? 😊
Cheers Davie! I'll give that a go. One thing, i bought Artic Fox dyed Green highlander but its more of a bluish green. Looks nothing like the one in your video of the Highlander, can you dye feathers like this that are already dyed? I've got it steeping in Fairy Liquid at the moment and ill go ahead with the dying if you say it would be ok. Best Regards and thank you! ~David
Hi @sigurdurmarolafsson4183, there's no need to wash the soap out the feathers in my view as I've never found it to make any difference to the dye taking to the feathers... All the very best Davie
Davie, If I'm going to dye whole capes or hairs and furs on the skin would you lay them out on some kitchen roll and allow them to dry naturally or just get in about them with the wife's hairdryer and hope she doesn't kill me when she finds out? tight lines bud, Jim.
hi davie i have heard some rumours that people have gotten in to bad health when they dyed thier own materials so i was wondering if veniards dyes can cause health problems or if these rumours were false because i wud like to dye my own feathers. thank you
Veniard dye is expensive in Canada as I browsed. I saw also silver creek dye from ENGLAND are selling in ebay. Can you please tell me what brand of dye is the best for dying feather? I have no experience about dying feather, but looking at your video is not so difficult. Thanks for video
Hi Bazlur Rahman, I use Veniard dyes for all my materials, I did a search and found them on this website so I hope they are cheaper than the ones you found... www.flymart.ca/product.aspx?product_id=1488 All the very best Davie...
Thanks for quick reply. I wanted to be sure that what you use(Veniard). I will find somewhere the Veniard dyes. That Canadian site I know. 4$ more than UK or australian store for 15g and 16$ canadian shipping(min)for anything( even empty package without materials). I rarely buy anything, here in Canada, although live here. The cost of fishing materials and shipping are the highest in the world.
Thanks for reply. actually I bought twice from your shop. I think this shop also your one. northeastanglingsupplies", because I saw the same address in UK. some dyes already I got and somes are waiting for. Only problem in your ebay-site is multiple currency listings for the dyes and you can't checkout or make combine shipping with listing in different currencies. Better all you list in UK pound. Why I have to order twice. In future I will do more dying and I only like 3-4 colors for our local steelhead , salmon Fishing flies
Thanks. I know your site. I have store in ebay and experience in international shopping, so I can find easily the direct store , if they have. I suggest in your webiste, make a video how to dye as Davie McPhail did a video
Hi Davie, Many thanks for doing this video. I tried it exactly as you said. Of course, I was very careful with the red, and used sparingly. Now that they are dry, they are still a bit too yellow. Guess I didn't use enough red. Is it possible to repeat the oricess and hit them with only the red, to make them more orange? Excellent videos - thanks (just don't tell them you borrowed their hair dryer - LOL!!)
Hi Robert, There's many reasons why the dye is not as strong as you would like, just add a bit more of the fluorescent red to get the shade you want..If you are still having problems then buy the sunburst dye from Veniards but watch as it can be too strong at times..Dying materials is always a learning process as there's many things can go wrong as you will find out and I have to be honest I'm still learning... All the very best Davie
How I love this Scottish accent! I hated it, when I first came to Scotland, but Scots are aswsome people and they simply changed my mind. To video - superb work thanks, Davie. What type of dye do you use? I missed is somehow from the video. Thank you. :-)
Hi Camber Lubos, I'm glad you liked the Scottish people we always like to make everyone welcome so it's very kind of you to say so..I used Veniard dyes, as you may know they are a wholesale company so if you know a shop that stocks their materials I'm sure they will be able to help you.. All the very best Davie...
Hi +Martyn White, I'm well thank you I hope you are well too...I did try bleaching materials many years ago but it didn't work as well as I would have liked, the main reason being that it made the materials very brittle...I have bought a few materials which have been bleached and dyed and they have been mostly ok so I would rather buy them than do it myself... All the very best Davie
Hi Davie, Do you know anyone or anyplace I can get natural materials for dying . Flat out tying this year and I’m trying to make things easier for myself 😄
Hi Clan, I buy most of my bulk materials from Veniards when I need them but also I'll buy off Ebay from time to time just to select what I need for tying with for myself...ATB Davie
Davie, someone told me I have to soak a full skin overnight with dawn. Is that true? Secondly, I have some doubles on the pears all's silks and i want sone bright yellow. If I used peroxide to take some of the color our do you think it will dye? I know you dye darning yarn and I have had success with that. Do you put the whole tippet section with the crests into the dye after cleaning? Sorry to be a pain, but you are one of the only people that answer my questions. I do appreciate you time and can wait for an answer. All the best to you and God bless you and yours. Sean
Hi Sean, Sometimes it does pay to soak a full skin overnight so when you put in in the dye it will get through to the ends of the fibres, I would would do this with deer hair especially..I've never tried to dye or bleach back silk so I wouldn't know how it would turn out and to be honest I would rather source some than do this...Yes you can put the whole head into the dye but I normally separate them as I want to take the crest out as it does take the dye quicker than the collar... I hope this helps you... All the very best Davie

Hi Nicholas, It would be ideal as the natural cream colour will help to give you a warmer sunburst colour, I do this a lot when dying any materials...If you dye a natural grey or dun yellow you will get a lovely olive and a light or dark ginger the same colour you'll get a golden olive both vey useful colours, so when your buying capes think of this as I always do.... works very well, I just died some ostrich plumes this way, thanks Davie!
You used which dry??
How did you dry them? I'm worried is I blow dry they're become too fluffy. It's the same effect if you were to steam them.

All the very best Davie...
Davie McPhail Gentleman thank you, I’ll give you a few a go later on
Hi carlo boni,
It may not have dried out completely or you may have had it in the pot too long and it's went really soft..If you feel this is going to happen just allow the tail to dry out naturally after dying as the less you touch it the better...I'm glad you liked the videos..

Very good video. Love all of your fly tying videos they are great. Could i ask what dye you use thanks.
Hi Harley,
I use Veniards dyes, they are a wholesaler so any shop that sells their materials should be able to help you..

Davie McPhail thanks very much mate. Tight lines!
Great video have you ever done a video on bleaching materials. Cant seem to find anything on how to do this.
Hi Steven,
I have tried bleaching once and the mess I made put me off so I've never had a go at it again..I'm glad you enjoyed the video...

Do you use a particular make of dye Davie?
Thanks for posting the videos been interested in the ones using Bug Bond.
Use the wife's hairdryer, just don't tell her. Brilliant 😂😂❤
Could you make a video on how you dye peacock feathers for the quills for dry flies. Thanx
Hi Yogi Bear,
I do need to dye some peacock eyes in the next few weeks so I'll see what I can do...

Hi Davie
I have been tying flies for about 4 years now and i want to start dying my own feathers, i want to dye a grizzle cock cape olive is this the same process as in the video? Also i would like to thank you for all your videos they have helped me loads with patterns and techniques. Especially the bug bond its great stuff!.
Cheers Richie, Newcastle
Also, is it possible to dye whole capes like this? Because i don't know if the dye would get to the feathers in the middle of the cape.. Thanks, Mike
Davie have you done a video on picric acid? It is hard to find the materials dyed with this so was thinking about doing it myself. Could you point me in the right direction by chance?
Hi Kerry,
I've never worked with picric though I have had some materials that have been stained with it, though I have to be honest I don't really use it in my flies..

Thanks David, great stuff. I've been trying to dye marabou feathers with Iron Oxide but so far no success, do I have to boil it or just bring it to heat? Why did you mix the vinegar? Tight lines!
Hi marcodsv,
I am sorry I've never tried to dye anything with Iron Oxide so I can't help you there though when I use the Veniard dyes I set the colour using vinegar as they are acid based...I'm glad you enjoyed the video...

@@DavieMcPhail thanks for the answer, cheers and. Tight lines. Keep it up
I am so glad you made this videoe because I was wondering how to do this.
Davie,
Im currently Dying an old rubbish white cape Highlander Green but it seems to have got to a point then stopped colouring.
Thanks,
~David
Hi Davie,
Excellent clip. Thank you for your help.
hi, I would like to know what is the brand of the dye powder?
Hi Daisy Wang,
I have attached a link below to the company that sell the dyes I use..

Hi Davie
Could you please tell me where to get the strung hackles especially the badger?
I have searched online for veniard strung hackles but had no luck. I'd like to try dying different colours for the cascades and parks shrimp. Would these strung hackles still do for the smaller doubles too like 9s and 11s salars?
Your videos really are such a big help, look forward to each one.
Many thanks.
Alan.
Also, do you bother with fabric conditioner as some do, apparently.
Morning Stephen,
Sometimes I do a hair conditioner rather than a fabric as it will soften and bring back the natural feel of the feathers, I especially do this when dyeing black as the feathers need a lot more time in the dye so they can suffer a bit...I do dye capes as well but all I do is give the cape a good wash before I dye it due to the skin being greasy and after dyeing you will have to have something like kitchen roll to soak it up until it dries completely..
All the very best Davie..
what is that in the clear bottle you put in it after the color? :)
Hi Nicholai Andersen,
These dyes are set using an acid like vinegar, I have used other acids but vinegar is the safest to use...
Davie Im just curious what kind of dye are you using? Is it something that we can get or can you advise something that would work
Hello Davie
Have you by any chance tried to dye Rhode Island Red? If so, what colour/make have you been successful with? Thanks.
Hey Davie , what kind of dye are you using and do you know if clothing dye will work the same way.
Hi davie have you got any tips for dying feathers primrose no one seems to have a dye close to the colour could you possibly recommend a blend of dye colours to get the best result thanks
Hi A5h13yK93-FTWPS4,
I would use a regular yellow dye to get a primrose but you would have to experiment to get the shade right...Primrose is quite a pale yellow so watch how much dye you put in..What are you trying to dye?

@@DavieMcPhail hi davie thanks for the advice its much appreciated im trying to dye starling wing feathers to form the wings of a yellow sally clydestyle fly i was reading john reids book on tying clydestyles and thought id give it a go also could you possibly tell me where you get your bronze peacock herl or how you prepare it thanks.
Davie you say theres nothing worse then dye on your fingers what about colour run on other flies 😂 boils my blood, great video yet again davie,
Thanks

If you were going for golden olive would you dye the feathers yellow followed by an olive?
Hi Gary,
Dyeing a natural ginger or brown cape yellow is my favourite way to get a golden olive or I'll just use Veniards golden olive...

@@DavieMcPhail thanks a million Davie 👍
Is it the same process with any dyeing? If I want to dye some feathers black.
Hi Mark,
If the dye hasn't set well then it may wash back so that you can try it again but if this doesn't work you can try and bleach it back a little but it can cause the fibres to get a bit dry and brittle..I've done this myself many a time so I just dye them a darker colour like black and claret...I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for the kind words

Hi Lindsay,
I'm sorry about the delay in getting back to you...I've tried many different ways of dyeing materials and I have added the vinegar in before and after but found them to be much the same but I always like to allow the dye to soak through first then add the vinegar especially with dense fur and hen like feathers..I have also used other agents to set the dye but you have to watch what you are doing but thats another story...AK Best's book is a very good one and I would certainly use this as a guide though most of what I have learnt is simply by trial and error over many years, the other thing you have to watch out for is that dyes do change over time so you have to adapt to suit them..I hope this helps you in some way...
All the very best Davie...
David it seems to me you are very good at this. Would you pleaseeeeee explaing how to dye peacock feathers. Actually I like to bleach them to Ivory color...How to do that.
Hi Davie soooo glad I found this video! Just wondering if you think this method would work with dark brown pheasant feather tails? :)
Hi Rachael,
I have dyed a few pheasant tails over the years sunburst and I have tyed a few flies with it from small pheasant tails to large Mayfly's which I'll use for tails and for the body..I'm glad you liked the video and thank you for the kind comments....

Sorry pressed wrong button I was wondering if you could put a video up of how to die golden pheasant tippets thanks, daryl
Is there no need to wash the soap out?
Hi @sigurdurmarolafsson4183,
there's no need to wash the soap out the feathers in my view as I've never found it to make any difference to the dye taking to the feathers...
All the very best Davie
Davie,
If I'm going to dye whole capes or hairs and furs on the skin would you lay them out on some kitchen roll and allow them to dry naturally or just get in about them with the wife's hairdryer and hope she doesn't kill me when she finds out?
tight lines bud,
Jim.
Hi davie, is the liquid all vinegar, or is it mixed with water.

hi davie
i have heard some rumours that people have gotten in to bad health when they dyed thier own materials so i was wondering if veniards dyes can cause health problems or if these rumours were false because i wud like to dye my own feathers.

Veniard dye is expensive in Canada as I browsed. I saw also silver creek dye from ENGLAND are selling in ebay. Can you please tell me what brand of dye is the best for dying feather? I have no experience about dying feather, but looking at your video is not so difficult. Thanks for video
Hi Bazlur Rahman,
I use Veniard dyes for all my materials, I did a search and found them on this website so I hope they are cheaper than the ones you found...

Hi Robert,
There's many reasons why the dye is not as strong as you would like, just add a bit more of the fluorescent red to get the shade you want..If you are still having problems then buy the sunburst dye from Veniards but watch as it can be too strong at times..Dying materials is always a learning process as there's many things can go wrong as you will find out and I have to be honest I'm still learning...

HI Davie, hope you're well.
Have you ever tried bleaching materials before colouring them? Curious to know what you think about it.
Hi +Martyn White,
I'm well thank you I hope you are well too...I did try bleaching materials many years ago but it didn't work as well as I would have liked, the main reason being that it made the materials very brittle...I have bought a few materials which have been bleached and dyed and they have been mostly ok so I would rather buy them than do it myself...

Nothing more than water and vinager? Someone told me he puts a dab of dishsoap also. What are your thoughts on that?
Davie! How would I go about dying peacock or ostrich herl? Thanks I need some quills dyed.
HiBrandon Nevarez,
I would use the same method I did in the video as they take the dye very well...

Sean
Hi Sean,
Sometimes it does pay to soak a full skin overnight so when you put in in the dye it will get through to the ends of the fibres, I would would do this with deer hair especially..I've never tried to dye or bleach back silk so I wouldn't know how it would turn out and to be honest I would rather source some than do this...Yes you can put the whole head into the dye but I normally separate them as I want to take the crest out as it does take the dye quicker than the collar... I hope this helps you...

***** It sure does Davie, thanks for your time in answering all my questions. I do appreciate it. All the best to you and yours. Sean

Hey Davie would this work well for cream Metz #2 hackle?
Hi Nicholas,
It would be ideal as the natural cream colour will help to give you a warmer sunburst colour, I do this a lot when dying any materials...If you dye a natural grey or dun yellow you will get a lovely olive and a light or dark ginger the same colour you'll get a golden olive both vey useful colours, so when your buying capes think of this as I always do....
