When I was a copy boy, one of my jobs was to rip stories off the telex machine just like in that opening sequence. The story I remember most vividly was when Elvis died in August 1977. It was about 7am here in Australia and the telex machine was going non stop for the next few hours. What a day that was!
I've slowly been getting caught up on all the full episodes, ever since discovering their existence here on YT back in December. And I'm just now midway through Season 4. Man, what a FANTASTIC show! Even the so-so episodes are better than half the dreck that passes for "Serious" drama these days! That said, I very FAINTLY remember catching this in prime time when I was about 7 or 8 (probably summer repeats, because my sisters and I were allowed to stay up later when school was out during the summer, and apparently, this show originally aired Monday nights at 10 pm on CBS). Otherwise, the last time I remember sort of watching it WAS weekday mornings back in the mid-90's, when A&E was re-running it (hence, the VHS rips uploaded here). Anyway, probably at no time before OR since "Lou Grant" has a sitcom ever spun off a DRAMATIC series, let alone done so as successfully (both creatively AND in the ratings) as this! I'm willing to bet that we will probably NEVER see something like that ever happen again!
It is , isn't it ? How old were you when it first ran ( 1977-1982 ) . I was 8-13 . Much of its themes flew over my head but I had a sense of the humanity involved so I would often watch it . Now I am revisiting it and love it .
Lou Grant was on for 5 years - and as I remember, it went down in a storm of controversy over Asner's political beliefs. The network didn't want to associate themselves with his far-left political views....which is really too bad. I know he participated in a lot of political demonstrations over the years as well. Thankfully we got those five seasons - they had so many great episodes!!!
I worked for the Green Bay News Chronicle selling subscriptions. It too was born out of a strike at the Press Gazette over automation. Then went to printing. It was always a fight competing with Gannett. Heh even before that had my own route as a kid. I really miss that paper. We had Mike Royko , so hilarious. But it was a far better local paper than Ganett. Good times. I still hate Ganett along with Clear Channel. Its all so digital now and crap.
50s or 60s is not a ripe old age. And even if someone does live to a "ripe old age", who says they wouldn't have lived longer, and healthier lives if not poisoned on a daily basis? 🤔
I have no problem with inventing countries; but especially with this show, one might expect a bit more creativity and a bit less negative stereotyping. "Malagua" means "bad water."
The character Rossy is soooo arrogant in this show and the actor who played him I saw him on some game shows and talk shows seems to think he is all that especially with women I cannot stand individuals like this
Great show
this was a great show
This series addressed many important issues, many of which are still, sadly, in play today.

Wow!!
Hadn't someone else famous died that same week ?
Groucho Marx died on August 19. Sebastian Cabot (of "Family Affair") died on the 22nd.

Trapper John MD came close but ultimately paled in comparison overall

Double thumbs up for this one 😉
It's Luis from "Sesame Street"!
Lou-"Make them(Feds) give it to you."-LMAO,
In the 70's there was no China to blame for faulty products, right? Gotta love our "holier-than-thou" attitude...
Another Measach Taylor sighting.

Mrs. Pynchon lives to a ripe old age for someone who was being poisoned daily.

@@rhymeswithsomethingy4766 Gee, I would love to argue with you, but I have forgotten what this is even about. 😂
@Eva Lehde I like to think of it as discussions, but TH-cam isn't particularly good for that. Can't keep track of a discussion thread.
"Ripe old age" is relative. I'm mid-70s and not "old" yet. 🙂
May you live long enough to understand.
Ohhhh, so this is what news people are really supposed to work. Not just spin or file for FOIA’s all day to get their story.
Freedom of Information Act 1967 .... I think a fair share of that was already going on ... but yeah , I get you
"Malagua," indeed! One expects a little better from this show!
Other than that, it's a great episode.
Every TV show is bound to have a down period. Lou Grant was no different.
It's not uncommon for shows to invent countries. West Wing invented Qumar.

Mission: Impossible invented some of the best names for countries.
They were already drawing heat for Ed Asners real life politics being to critical of the Reagan White House . Lou Grant was cancelled because of it .
Seeing the guy from Designing Women using that lame accent feels like a comedy sketch.

For the life of me I still don't know what they mean by "books". I know "graphs" must mean "paragraphs"
I rhink its somethi g like that
@@georgeelmerdenbrough6906 My (ignorant) guess was half-page columns.
