    I just did an oil change for the same model. You don’t need to take off the under cover, there are two openings for the oil filter and the drain plug, use a flat screw driver to turn the plastic catch which are holding the covers in place. BMW recommends 4.8 L of oil, but 5 L should still be ok. One recommendation though, place a large piece of cardboard underneath first to catch any over spill, will save your lots of time to clean if any mishaps should happen.

      Thanks, I'll give that a try on the next oil change.

      I'm about to do it tomorrow and was wondering if I really needed to take that off. Thanks for your advice

    I find that using a set of Rhino ramps makes a world of difference in changing oil. Thanks for showing how to check the level and clear the mileage. Shops charge a lot for just an oil change, this shows it isn't much more difficult doing it yourself.

      Just bout the rhino ramp for this same situation....and ur exactly right

      but does it affect it if its tilted up ?

      My driveway is slanted, so when I put a car on the ramps, it is almost level. Just changed oil and filter on two other cars last week. I drive them on the night before so oil has time to drain into the pan. Not fun to work on a hot engine.

      Just thinking this for the X1. Problem is do you also add a jack/stands for extra safety?

    That’s the most messy oil change I’ve seen. The oil filter cap has a release drain in it. Also drain oil first and oil filter while it’s draining.

  • @TipoF129B
    @TipoF129B ปีที่แล้ว

    Tip- snap the filter into the oil filter cavity THEN put the cap back on.

    You used the wrong Mobil 1 oil. Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W-20 does not meet BMW additive package or kinematic viscosity requirements and is not certified for use. The Mobil 1 website will even tell you this. You need to use the BMW spec Mobil 1 European Car oil. Apparently, no one reads the owners manual anymore. For those reading- just because an oil is in the 0W-20 category doesn't mean it's suitable for your vehicle.

      I was afraid of the same! But this Mobil oil complies with all the alternative oil specs written in the manual. All the API certifications and viscosity

    When you do it yourself and reset the oil check etc. Does it keep in the car service history? I mean when you check the history it usually show date, milage and service type/code.

      @shawnbarge1734  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't see a history record. It just shows when thr next one is due. Where do you find history at.

    • @shawnbarge1734
      @shawnbarge1734  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've read that BMW went to 0W20 to increased fuel economy and emissions but the rest of the world stayed with 5W30.
      Page 213 of the 2017 X1 manual says this:
      When selecting an engine oil, make sure that the engine oil has the viscosity grade SAE0W-30 or SAE 0W-20. Alternatively, also en‐gine oils with viscosity grades SAE 5W-20,SAE 5W-30, SAE 0W-40 or SAE 5W-40 canbe used

    BMW oil changes are tailored to the specific needs of high-performance engines, often requiring specialized synthetic oils and precise service techniques. This ensures your BMW maintains its peak performance and adheres to the stringent standards set by the manufacturer.
    What kind of oil should I use in my BMW?
    Your BMW deserves the best: full synthetic oils like BMW TwinPower Turbo Engine Oils or other reputable brands like Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40. These oils are engineered to meet the high demands of BMW engines, providing superior protection, efficiency, and longevity.

    Technically that oil used here does not meet BMW's "Longlife-17fe" specification.

    So much wrong with this video. 1. You drain the main engine oil first and NOT the filter. 2. You didn't lubricate the O ring on the new filter swap which will result in rubber migration and it could seize up. 3. The whole purpose of the drain plug in that filter housing is to make a lot less mess. They include a new oring and plug for a reason. Next oil change update your video please.

    • @shawnbarge1734
      @shawnbarge1734  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair enough. I didn't use the filter plug as I'd rather clean up the outside of the housing than risk breaking a plastic plug. That said these cars are still pretty new so likely safe to use the plug for awhile. I'll do that next time.
