I know this is a year ago but....he didn't do any of that. He said "This is boring and too much like TTYD so make it more creative and interesting". And of course it was boring look at those early screen shots do you EVER see anything like star points, star power, FP, BP, Badges, the audience, even items? No because there never was it was literally the most bare bones basic of PM gameplay it's really not a wonder it was called both boring and uncreative. On the subject of star points the game was never going to have them. The new head of this new PM team decided from the beginning "I want to make a system where battles are about strategy and how you use your skills not your stats". That's why the battle system was designed as it was in all versions. As for partners after being told to design a more interesting system Intelligent Systems kind of went off the deep end. They went balls deep with sticker based combat but then soon found that partners were clashing with the system THEY wanted to make. They apparently tried a lot of ways to fit partners into the system but none of them felt right, and so in the end rather include an element into the system they were unhappy with they removed it entirely. For the story Miyamoto didn't want a minimalistic tale. But he felt Mario is stronger when it uses smaller episodic tales than one big overarching plot. Basically he was thinking something along the lines of PM64. There isn't really an overarching plot it's "bower takes peach and is boosted by the star rod go get the star spirits to rescue her" but the game is very enjoyable because of the individual stories from the fight against the koopa bros to the shy guy's invasion of Toad Town. This is also what the new PM writer felt was their specialty. Still miyamoto didn't actually make any calls, he's a supervisor he gives suggestions and makes sure development flows smoothly. He told them it was up to them to decide on what to do and this PM team was split, in the end lack of interest in the overarching tale from surveys of fans lead them to focus on smaller episodes. From this point it was up to the writer and the writer dropped the ball, most people enjoy World 3 and say it feels like a proper PM chapter. And that very easily could have been the standard for the whole game, there is no rule that they couldn't it was a failure of the new writer's part. Same for Bowser talking they could of made Bowser talk the writer simply chose not to, they chose to make only the squad of 16 goombas boss talk. In fact what Miyamoto gets a lot of blame for the real blame needs to be put on IS. People think because the same developer made it that Miyamoto was the changing factor, but he wasn't. Because what a lot of people miss is that sticker star is made by an almost entirely green paper mario team. Most of the original Paper Mario team was gone after TTYD. A few were still there for SPM and then that left to. Almost everyone who made PM SS and had decision making power had never actually made any of the previous PM games. Another thing people overlook is the less involved with the series Miyamoto got the worse the games got. He was directly involved and held majority power for 64 and TYYD. But then with SPM he started to take a hands off role as a mere supervisor, and that carried over to SS where he had even LESS involvement than he did with SPM. Why does him going further away hurt the series? Simple because he knows how to make a fun game, he's experienced, he knows what he knows....and this team just doesn't these newer people don't have that same history and knack their experience pales in comparison. Also I respect your avatar, Peridot is best gem.
@@Hirokey123 This makes so much sense. Seeing as the people who made SS were completely new, they didnt really know how to make a Paper Mario game. Then when they developed CS they understood a little more, and now TOK where they seemed to have done a shit ton of research and TOK looks the closest to TTYD we will get for a while.
@@Hirokey123 Also I'd like to add onto this statement that Miyamoto himself said in an interview that he found Sticker Star's final product "boring". Tanabe is the one who went along with Miyamoto's suggestions, Miyamoto didn't force anyone to do his suggestions.
Just an idea, but maybe the stickers only modify the hammer and jump like they do now, but you can use a regular hammer or jump indefinitely. That way, one doesn't need to buy worn-out or normal jumps/hammers and use Mario's classic arsenal.
@@Masked_Mastermind Miyamoto only said to keep the characters to the Mushroom Kingdom family. That was it, you're right Kensuke Tanabe was the one who made modern Paper Mario the way it is.
Sticker Star would have been good if they went the beta way. But nope, they had to bring Miyamoto into it. Miyamoto is cool, but he should stay away from RPGs. Fact!
Color Splash ended up being a pretty good addition to the series, and it has the excuse of its development starting just days after Sticker Star's completion, meaning that they didn't have much time to listen to feedback. But there's absolutely no way they can just ignore the backlash that Color Splash's initial trailer received. They're either going to have to ditch the series or do their best to replicate the original style with the new development team (Most of the 64/TTYD/SPM team left the series somewhere in the middle of SS's development from what I've heard) or try to get more of the old team members back. The backlash and outrage they'd get for making a third Sticker Star-styled game would be unbelievable.
***** There's no excuse making a game days after release wit no feedback. Also. are you on reddit or gamefaqs? Your name sounds familiar. EDIT: "GuyWithPie", whose username got stolen by a dormant account, seems like you. Are you also on roblox?
I remember staring at the V1 screenshots constantly and feeling unimaginably hype for this game ...and then the game lived up to absolutely none of that hype ;w;
I wouldn’t be surprised if that “S Meter” thing was meant to increase your Album’s maximum page count or something, kinda like the hammer scraps and the Paint Hammer in Color Splash. If that was the case, it makes me angry they took out something that would’ve given the battles more incentive.
Not really, the Paint Hammer upgrade is actually very ignorable, the game gives you plenty of paint, and you don’t really need to spend that much paint anyways, as well as the fact that you can purchase prepainted cards with the huge sums of cash you get And Sticker Star isn’t far off either, you can even find compact Thing Stickers that take way less space than the giant ones for similar damage, and there’s plenty of farming spots to get bunches of flashy stickers, and they encourage you to finish the normal encounters using one turn, and Sticker Star doesn’t throw as many forced encounters as Color Splash, let alone only Kamek tampers with your stickers, and that only happens during his few fights So being able to increase the sticker capacity using some other method besides collecting the Royal Stickers wouldn’t have really done much for the game, the inventory space is very manageable as it is, expanding it would just let people hoard more stickers than they can chew xd
I really hope they revisit this beta and revive it for the Switch. Nintendo’s philosophy has changed a lot since then so they should embrace the fact that fans want a return to 64/TTYD style gameplay rather than dismissing it as a port. I mean, the Switch has released plenty of games that can be considered ports both literally and with the logic this beta was so why not do something on a series fans will eat up. Edit: well here’s hoping the remake sells well
Well sorry to disappoint you but the answer to that is a big fat no. But hey at least this new game looks better than sticker and color splash combined.
There's a nonzero chance now! I'm really hoping the next Paper Mario game can bring this game to life, seeing what was taken away hurts a lot and every day I hope we can find the lost e3 2010 trailer.
Well Wiggler was supposed to just be a normal over world hazard. In the short clip that played during the E3 this was revealed it showed of like 2 Wigglers.

This. This is why I'm no longer going by the "goombario64" name. Paper Mario hit it's lowest at this point. That and their obsession with cats! "Cat Mario", "Jinbanyan", "Cat doodles (in SwapNote/SwapDoodle)", "CAT Machine / MEOW Coupons (in Animal Crossing)".. ALRIGHT ALREADY! I get it, they don't like dogs. Doesn't mean they have to neglect them... A Chain Chomp as a companion would have been awesome. What the fumble was going on in that think-tank of thiers..? I don't care if Color Splash is anything better, either. I still like Nintendo, but I've already parachuted out of the Paper Plane.
Well, Miyamoto was right about one thing: it looked like TTYD. What he got wrong, is that people WANTED TTYD! Still, Color Splash is a HUGE improvement. Still, where did you get these screenshots at 1:29 onwards?
Color Splash is a good improvement, Origami King is a HUGE improvement Open Areas, New Villain, Actual Plot, Bowser Is Not The Villain, Coherent Baltte System
Now I'm even more pissed at Miyamoto or whoever ruined the game, this looked like an actual Paper Mario game at first! Why did they have to fuck it up so bad!?
This game held promise, a promise that one of our favorite series in Nintendo was done with that change in the formula. Sadly, it was a death sentence instead. What IS the future of Paper Mario? I'd say it's time to give up with the release of Paper Mario: Color Splash. It WAS a fun game, just not the game we desperately crave.
+Nicola Cabiddu This is just rumor though, so it's best not to get your hopes up too fast. Still, let's hope for a Paper Mario announcement on switch in 2020 or something.
Man, every time I see the beta of this game I get really upset. To think we could've actually gotten a true return to form to the series at some point. I really hope there's some kind of alternate universe where this was the game we got and not the game we have now.
it used to have partners and whatever that extra bar in the battle system was 😭😭😭 then they ruined it don't worry too much guys, it probably sucked before all that was removed too, so we probably didn't miss out on much
Beta: look a bearded king, or a chain chomp partner or a room filled with cards, a blue dungeon with a whomp which might be the first time we see a whomp in a paper Mario game, same thing goes with the soda jungle Final: uh I have stickers....
Emerald Gaming 101 Not a fan of the music. The only one I liked was the last phase of Bowser. The others were too jazzy for me or overused remixes of past Mario games, which is overdone now. Sticker Star basically suck period. I almost want to say it's fact. It's bland, boring, tedious, unimaginable, repetitive, and felt like a chore than playing a game.
Miyamoto is not working on Paper Mario anymore. Kensuke Tanabe adapted his ideology though. TTYD is also one of my favorite games! Playing Mods or challenge runs is pretty interesting.
I remember being excited for the game and then I never touched it again after buying it when it was nothing like the beta and I really wanted to know who that Chain Chomp was and the other partners you would get throughout the adventure.
"Oh no, this game looks like ttyd, a excellent game loved by all the Paper Mario fans, what i should do now?. I have a idea, lets make the game more boring and remove interesing features, yes, the Paper Mario fans is gonna love this" -Miyamoto
thats not correct miyamoto just said it felt like ttyd and he would like if it was just mario characters but he never forced it he even asked Alphadream to do the same thing for dreamteam but they said no
Wow xp level and partners are really fun things. Of course making a game different than ttyd is crazy and it means that the game is trash. Seriously bro you never played this game
Also if anyone else is wondering I am actually trying to make a game inspired by The Thousand-Year Door and Sticker Star's beta. (But without any stickers AT ALL!) It will feature an all new character as the main protagonist and with about 10 partners including one that has a secret and dark back story.
Im only creating ideas for it, but I have removed the ten partner idea and replaced it with the same physic as Super Paper Mario on how you can change your character, but it wont have a platformer and it will have the TTYD Battle System. I plan on naming it "The Souls and the World." It might also play in an Earthbound type of style, but with the Paper Mario battle system. The game is still going well though.
Nintendo should hire me, i have good boss and chapter ideas, id have unique partners (probably wouldnt think of a name tho), and NEW THEMES so it isnt just grass dessert forest water sky mountain snow, id mix up themes so possibly a palace made of water in the sky is being taken over by paratroopas and you need to find a way to stop it, or you meet up with Kolorado again and he asks if you could come on an adventure and you have no choice but to agree so you find this mountain but it is covered in fog, hike your way up only to find sombody was following you and this is the boss because he wants to be the first to climb the mountain so you beat him up, those are just two of my many chapter ideas, this comment is getting to long if you would like to hear more reply with an idea of yourse and i will most likely reply with more of mine (trust me there are more)
Nintendo shouldn't hire a naive first-grader who doesn't understand a bit of design or/and programming. It's not that easy to develop a game, child. Maybe if you try hard, you'll get a job at MCDolands. I'll pay ya a visit there, okayyy???
GuyWithThePie Oh, I’m pretty sure it was some form of EXP, like Star Points. But like everything else good about the game, it was sadly removed per Miyamoto’s request.
Original version for sure. Also, it seriously baffles me how they got rid of the secondary meter, when having it could or would have solved a slew of the game's problems.
(Edited since what I said before was really.. harsh.) This video proves that Nintendo should just back off from Mario RPG's and leave it to Intelligent Systems.
+Ningen-Sama Miyamoto fanboy attacking Paper Mario fans for standing up against his precious god, then even goes to shit talk in someone's video and use cancerous emojis in order to humiliate himself anymore. You're probably the same age as most of Logan Paul's fans, always flaming whoever fights him. If you're going to mock fans of dead franchises that are pissed at Nintendo for shitting on them, go back to NSMB or whatever franchise they're milking.
I still really admire Miyamoto as a creator, but it's clear he should have never had full reign over Paper Mario to begin with. *Of course* he's gonna remake the whole thing to be just like a mainline Mario game, he's working with what he's best at, which is the worst path to take with this specific franchise. It's the same reason I love Ryan Johnson as a director, but don't think he should have been brought on to direct a Star Wars movie. Miyamoto is a talented director, but story-driven RPGs just aren't his thing.
@@NerdMiGerd Yeah you’re right, gosh the comment I posted here was really harsh towards Miyamoto, and I feel really bad now. Heck someone a few years ago said they found my address because of this comment, and for the longest time I thought I didn’t even make this comment. I am a huge Miyamoto admirer as well, and I regret the comment I made. Though I still think he should leave the Mario RPGs to Intelligent Systems.
@@RyderPlatinumWarpstar Yeah you're good. It's the same reason I'm worried at the prospect of a new Mario and Luigi game being made, without Alpha Dream's input.
Actually, I have a theory that this is what the game looked like _after_ Miyamoto's initial suggestion to just use mainline Mario universe characters for this game, which I suppose might've been his reaction to Super Paper Mario's weird geometrical characters. It still looked fine though, and probably could've been up there with Paper Mario 64 if they continued in this direction. Thing is, Tanabe took things way too far and ended up with the game we all know now.

Simple because he knows how to make a fun game, he's experienced, he knows what he knows....and this team just doesn't these newer people don't have that same history and knack their experience pales in comparison.
Also I respect your avatar, Peridot is best gem.
Hirokey123 it's not like sticker star was better then the beta anyway
I feel like Miyamoto gets too much hate.
We all realize that if the original beta was chosen we’d still have stickers, right?
true, it would’ve of been nice to have something with actual life put into it
Just an idea, but maybe the stickers only modify the hammer and jump like they do now, but you can use a regular hammer or jump indefinitely. That way, one doesn't need to buy worn-out or normal jumps/hammers and use Mario's classic arsenal.
They might've worked like the Bros Items in Partners in Time

Look at this its so magnificent the battle system the characters THERE WERE PARTNERS
SInce CS seems to take inspiration from SS, it probably never had partners.
Rendum Guy well there is a chain chomp partner

Yes, a chain chomp was planned to be a partner.
Sadly, even if the beta game was the official game, he wouldnt be in it.
Villager of SmashVille Why wouldn't the chain chomp be in it?
***** The developers said that "It wouldn't go with the sticker mechanics."
I remember staring at the V1 screenshots constantly and feeling unimaginably hype for this game
...and then the game lived up to absolutely none of that hype ;w;
I wouldn’t be surprised if that “S Meter” thing was meant to increase your Album’s maximum page count or something, kinda like the hammer scraps and the Paint Hammer in Color Splash. If that was the case, it makes me angry they took out something that would’ve given the battles more incentive.
I think how much you can use your sticker until it ran out or something, I dont know.
Not really, the Paint Hammer upgrade is actually very ignorable, the game gives you plenty of paint, and you don’t really need to spend that much paint anyways, as well as the fact that you can purchase prepainted cards with the huge sums of cash you get
And Sticker Star isn’t far off either, you can even find compact Thing Stickers that take way less space than the giant ones for similar damage, and there’s plenty of farming spots to get bunches of flashy stickers, and they encourage you to finish the normal encounters using one turn, and Sticker Star doesn’t throw as many forced encounters as Color Splash, let alone only Kamek tampers with your stickers, and that only happens during his few fights
So being able to increase the sticker capacity using some other method besides collecting the Royal Stickers wouldn’t have really done much for the game, the inventory space is very manageable as it is, expanding it would just let people hoard more stickers than they can chew xd
I hate how they want to erase the beta of this game forever
Someone needs to do a homebrew remake of the original beta for 3DS
I really hope they revisit this beta and revive it for the Switch. Nintendo’s philosophy has changed a lot since then so they should embrace the fact that fans want a return to 64/TTYD style gameplay rather than dismissing it as a port. I mean, the Switch has released plenty of games that can be considered ports both literally and with the logic this beta was so why not do something on a series fans will eat up.
Edit: well here’s hoping the remake sells well
Well sorry to disappoint you but the answer to that is a big fat no. But hey at least this new game looks better than sticker and color splash combined.

The chain chomp always being there is interesting. Should he have been a partner?
Beta: look a bearded king, or a chain chomp partner or a room filled with cards, a blue dungeon with a whomp which might be the first time we see a whomp in a paper Mario game, same thing goes with the soda jungle

The music doesn't fit a Paper Mario game. Miyamoto changest the music as well, it _was_ better.
You can tell the game got worse and worse as development went on

Having a chain chomp as a partner would of been epic
I remember being excited for the game and then I never touched it again after buying it when it was nothing like the beta and I really wanted to know who that Chain Chomp was and the other partners you would get throughout the adventure.
Sadly they went backwards during developement.
"Oh no, this game looks like ttyd, a excellent game loved by all the Paper Mario fans, what i should do now?.
I have a idea, lets make the game more boring and remove interesing features, yes, the Paper Mario fans is gonna love this"
-Miyamoto
thats not correct miyamoto just said it felt like ttyd and he would like if it was just mario characters but he never forced it he even asked Alphadream to do the same thing for dreamteam but they said no
Wow xp level and partners are really fun things.
Villager of SmashVille update pls

I like sticker star but this looks so much better. (the V1 Screenshots)
Its evolving. Just backwards
I wonder what's next, because there really isn't another gimmick to make it different. It's either partners or just Mario.
That didn't age well...
What do you suppose the S meter on the top-left of some screenshots was supposed to stand for? Star Points? Special Attack? Guess we'll never know...

The beta was going to have the old enemy sprites from the first 3 Paper Mario games.
It made Paper Mario unique, so I prefer the beta.
welp, looks like there's a chance for a fangame called "Paper Mario: Done Right" will come out soon
Should’ve kept on with V1

+GuyWithThePie they took away the unique Goomba style that the Paper Mario games had
I personally don't mind the Goombas as much as other ruined enemies (Spinies...) but, they are rounder, have brown shoes, and closed mouths.
I don't think they look terrible, but it really is dumb instead of having actually creative designs, they're just taken from New Super Mario Bros
Seems like the game was still going to get stickers anyway even with partners. I don't know if this was good or bad.

Original version for sure. Also, it seriously baffles me how they got rid of the secondary meter, when having it could or would have solved a slew of the game's problems.
(Edited since what I said before was really.. harsh.)
This video proves that Nintendo should just back off from Mario RPG's and leave it to Intelligent Systems.

We could've had a Chain Chomp partner... 😭💀
This is so depressing... It was gonna be good... ttyd is one of my favorite games ever and then miyamoto comes and shoots it
Actually, I have a theory that this is what the game looked like _after_ Miyamoto's initial suggestion to just use mainline Mario universe characters for this game, which I suppose might've been his reaction to Super Paper Mario's weird geometrical characters. It still looked fine though, and probably could've been up there with Paper Mario 64 if they continued in this direction. Thing is, Tanabe took things way too far and ended up with the game we all know now.
