It’s very hard for a parent to know what to do when they’re told that a diagnosis is important and then also that it’s not good for a child to be labeled too early.
It is very hard, and I don't think this parent is a bad mom. It's hard because it's important and it should be that way, but it gets even harder when teachers and professionals can't model good communication.
I’ve been the kid in this situation more times than I can remember! Never any discussion of testing though, was a cursed gifted kid so just lots of punishment and “doesn’t follow directions” on report cards while test scores stayed super high. Diagnosed adhd & autism in early & late twenties, respectively. I knew I’d be glad I subbed, kids need less of that energy and more of this energy
I think it's completely normal to be anxious about testing. What I try to focus on is that benefit the testing can have on a child. Getting diagnosed can really transform someone's direction in life.
You know what's even more frustrating is when you say he's due for the triannual review. They know they're like. OK, we'll get to it at some point. You note to them that the law says they have to do it with a certain time frame, and they say they'll get to it. And another note for 5 years you've tried To get them to Comply with the I e p as well as the court order. But they wish to do neither, hoping that he will just graduate quickly and get out of their way. Another note here is you in September at the IEP meeting, he scheduled his next year classes. It is then reviewed again in January. Because you want to make sure as a parent. You do this because in the prior two years they've ignored exactly the same scenario. Summer comes july and you know that his classes are there Even though the school said everything is in the system. His Special Needs Guidance councilor is unavailable because she takes the month of july off every yr. You wait until she gets back.Usually the week before school and have to start all over again.Because all his classes are full because their rule is that typical kids get primary choice. Non typical kids fill in the blanks. This time she waited the day before the second semester to convince him that he didn't need his music class, which is in his I.E. P Instead he can have a study hole. He comes home he tells me he made a change and then I have to go through the process and say You have violated the law again. My lawyer has been notified. Action will be taken if you do not put him back in the pre approved class. Five years running and they play this game so that a typical kid can have a slot. I had a 45 minute argument with the principal on another matter. When they said that they've never done anything inappropriate and then I had to note every item. I reported them to the Department of Education, which included violation of the state rules and rights regarding health class. They didn't. Think a kid like him couldn't need because, you know, Sex would never be on his mind, right? Even worse was when he was supposed to go in and get tested for the driver's Ed class, and they told him that if he showed up on that Saturday. For that test that he would be arrested for terrorist threats. Because a kid like him has no right to learn how to drive. Principal said that didn't happen.I sent him the emale that was a threat. 17-year-olds can drive their cars onto the school lot but my 21-year-old special needs child can not ride his scooter because he's unsafe, even though he's been riding it for over 2 years with DOT and MVC approval, and yes state troopers training too for professional oversight training. I could keep going about the abuses the school ama staff have done include inappropriate behavior bt adults infront if MD and LD classes.
I am not a teacher, parent or child, so I am in no way your target demographic, but a couple of your videos popped up in my feed and I like your nuanced takes on things so imma subscribe anyway 😁

Psychological testing doesn't hurt the kid at all. Often it's just done through observation. I don't see the downside the mother is seeing.
