Didn't even consider this could be an issue even though it seems like such an obvious thing to double-check in retrospect. Good info to know for someone looking to get into reptiles/amphibs at a budget
Thanks very much… wish I’d considered it first 🤦🏻. We’ve a bigger project we’re working on currently and that viv had a bearded dragon in previously, and I think all the digging attempts it must have done in an undersized enclosure must have removed 80% of the silicone it could reach!
Ahhh mate that's so annoying! I've done that before. Good that it's getting sorted but so frustrating when you finished it all. Love the frog! I agree, very similar markings to a milk frog 🐸
The idea to use a seed pod and a bit of bamboo to make a natural looking lid that just blends in is genius. Thanks so much for that idea! What kind of seed pod is it? I'm looking for exactly that kind of seed pod but I can't find anything.
I can’t recall I’m sorry. We just got a load of decor bits at a reptile shop pick and mix. We’ve used other bits and bobs including small pieces of cork bark as the top of the ‘plug’ in other vivs 👍
A bg method I saw, that looked worth a try, was hitting the foam with substrate while it was still fresh and sticky. Seems like it would work well, and it would save you the grief and expense of carving the foam and applying the silicone.
I'm planning to build my bioactive environment and making sure I can maintain it before I add anything other than the clean up crew and I might have forgot to feed those guys had I not watched this lol. It was a serious "well, duh!" moment.
@@timreptile gotcha. I'm planning on getting a crested gecko so it needs humidity, but not necessarily a puddle at the bottom. I was thinking of pouring some water so I can check for leaks just in case.
@@richardsanchez5444 the reason for the drainage layer is so you have humidity without a puddle at the bottom. I would recommend doing a water test as you suggest.
@@timreptile Sorry for late reply. I ordered some online. Im in progress of my build now, hoping it stays secure and fixed to the back. I have just done the foam stage it recently so going to cut it back soon and sillicone the outer layers to add substrate. Praying it stays held together.
@timreptile I used taiga black. The tank is finished but I am struggling to keep the temperature of it up. I have a 150w CHE and a 60w CHE bit the 150 is making the basking spot way to high(38-40) and the 60 isn't heating enough at all so I've had to order a 100w which is coming tomorrow. I hope this can make things right 😔
@@timreptile No worries, nothing against our American cousins but it was refreshing to stumble across someone from our side of the pond making decent content for a change 🙂
@@coldbloodC thank you! If you look at our channel you’ll see we’re friends with Jon’s rainforest room. Jon has some great content, and also does aquariums. Might be worth a look if you’ve not found him before?

@@Stephane-db4is it does need to be dry. If the foam is roughed up, and you’re using the correct silicone, that’s the only thing I can think it is. No problem at all.
Depends what is available in your area, but I always use a fish safe product. Having said that I see many youtubers will use just about any brand, but having contacted manufacturers and been told not to use their products I’ll stick to the fish safe stuff for now.
Just water tested another tank this evening.... massive hole with water going everywhere!!!! Glad only had a minor incident with this one as a warning!

Good luck with your build! We’ve not posted for months but somehow ended up with 4/5 builds on the go at the same time!
So it only might be a problem if you plan on having standing water in the tank?
Yes, but I cat think of any arboreal, desert dwelling treefrogs, where a bioactive enclosure wouldn’t necessitate a drainage layer.

what type of silicone did you use? I used a glass silicone and my coco peat doesn't stick on it :(
Normal black aquarium safe 100% silicone. Is your coco peat dry?

I don’t. I’ve seen this species captive bred from quite a few sources though.
