4 Paper Coloring Challenge - TONED Paper vs WHITE Paper

  • Steve recently "challenged" me to color one piece of art on four different papers, just to see how each paper changes the look of the colored object. So we printed a small cupcake that I drew on white, black, tan and gray papers. I then proceeded to color the cupcakes with the Derwent Chromaflow colored pencils, doing my best to try and color each cupcake the same.
    It was a lot of fun to do, and was so interesting to see how the colored art looks on each type of paper. Comment below which is your favorite?

    I LOVED this challenge! I love using toned paper and think you definitely need to add grey to the print shop. PLEASE do this challenge again with my beloved Prismacolor pencils so I can share it with my coloring group! Thank you for all your hard work! 💜💜💜

    I really enjoyed the comparison between the different papers. All of them look nice, but my favorites are the toned gray and toned tan papers. They show the colors, or the contrast of the colors, so much better than white papers do. Thanks for sharing this with us!

    This was a great challenge. I think I preferred the grey a little bit over the tan. However, I think my overall thoughts are that certain pencil colors will 'pop' more on the different paper colors. I think it would be interesting to find a color scheme that would work well on each of the color papers and them compare each of those color schemes on the other colors of paper. After everything is done, I think a 4x4 grid art collage of all 16 pictures would be great. Cupcakes would work well as a testing image since they can come in such a variety of colors and they would be small enough to combine into a reasonable art grid. Also, maybe a simple flower pattern...ummmm Great work and great suggestion by Steve.

    I really enjoyed this challenge. As for the broken pencil leads, I have seen a couple people on TH-cam that super glue the tips back in to the pencil when there is still wood casing to slip led back into and also i have seen some people use a microwave to refuse internal leads of often breaking pencils however I would be nervous about the metallic labels on my pencils so i am going to try a heating pad to refuse the internal leads. I am also glad for the comparison of these pencils to prisma. I am convinced i should just stay with using my prisma. Thanks

    I loved this challenge! So cool to see the differences between colors. I actually liked the Grey best. And, my first Chromoflow set (24) had a BAD grass green. I've also had to contact Blick because some of my Lightfast are bad. They are replacing the Lightfast. But I got the Chromoflow from Amazon and I just didn't think it would be worth it to get the grass green replaced. I just bought the set of 12. AND then the set of 72 comes out so I have triples of some of the pencils now. hahaha

    I originally had the 24 set of Chromoflow, and then 72 set when they released and I don't think I have had much trouble at all with any breakage. Maybe one? You may have gotten a set that had a rough travel.

    • @CraftyColourist
      @CraftyColourist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, I think they were damaged in transit. I haven't had any issues with my 72 set, and only 1 with my older 24 set. ArtGearGuide makes the very interesting point that there's very rarely no issues with any coloured pencils in a set. Even the mighty Polychromos - I picked one up off the shelf openstock and the coloured core fell right out! Suffice to say, I didn't buy that one!

    • @timyank8433
      @timyank8433 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CraftyColourist I would totally agree with that statement. I would expect there to be maybe one or two duds in a set with breakage and whatnot. This is why whenever possible, I try to purchase as much as I can off the store shelf so I can inspect it myself, because as you experienced, even then you find bad apples. But at least then you know!

    I'vs seen a tip that warming the pencils (like on a sunny windowsill) for a while can help the cores "melt" and help fix the breakage issues. I've so far been very lucky with all the pencils I've bought throughout the years that the ones I really like I've never had breakage issues... Yet... Now I've put the energy out there I'm sure I'm going to have a horrible time in the future 😅
    I've only got a few chromaflow from a Scrawlrbox and I wasn't really impressed with the colour saturation so I doubt I'll expand my collection past those 6. I did fall in love with the Posca pencils though, so creamy and pigmented

    Hello Jennifer, the reason why you keep getting the chromaflow or the prismacolor pencils breaking, is that you are using a hand sharpener or an electric sharpener to sharpen them. Using these sharpeners to give you a sharp point, but it stresses the pencil, this goes for all soft core pencils, and the tips break off or the whole end breaks off. You need to buy a cheap Dahle crank sharpener with the setting on the back set to the lowest, not the highest point. The end of the pencil looks like a pitt pastel pencil when it arrives in the tin. They do not break this way , less stress and you are sharpening less of the pencil too. It gives you a flat top to the pencil which you can use for fine detail using the edge. Hope this solves the problem, and stops you giving pencils that do this, bad looking reviews.
    I use the Dahle sharpener for all my soft core and pastel pencils, and have never had a pencil break since.
    I like the tan paper best, it has more contrast. Thanks Kevin

    • @electrichen6243
      @electrichen6243 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love my Dahle for longer points and that's the setting I use. I find if you absolutely have to have a sharp point and medium-firm pressure, hold the pencil 90 degrees to the paper. I often use my prisma sharpener to just sharpen the point of the lead by not inserting it all the way so you don't shave the wood.

    • @kevinworth3311
      @kevinworth3311 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@electrichen6243 Best way is to use the Dahle on the low setting for soft and pastel pencils and leave the setting at that. Buy another one set to the high sharp point setting for all other pencils, they are cheap sharpeners. I use an electric Tihoo sharpener for all my other pencils, to get the sharp point, which the harder pencils can tolerate.

  • @electrichen6243
    @electrichen6243 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My Prisma colours are always breaking, may be it's a transport or transport temperature issue. I'm from UK and I don't have a problem with other pencils. I now use the shorter dumpy option on the Prisma sharpener, this avoids less waste and you don't need a fine point for most of your colouring.

    • @kevinworth3311
      @kevinworth3311 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, I said the same in my reply, showing them breaking all the time in her video gives them a bad reputation, when it is how she sharpens them that is at fault.

    • @noneyabuizz9749
      @noneyabuizz9749 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinworth3311 But the point is, you shouldn't need a special sharpener for every colored pencil. and If it was the sharpening then every single pencil would have an issue. I agree that some sharpeners are superior. And she didn't say anything bad about Derwent. She simply shared her struggle. and this happens with the cores in a lot of pencils. She even said several times to let her know so she knew if it was a pencil thing or if it was dropped in the shipping aspect.
      Like when I got my black widows I had so many issues and tried sharpening in several methods even using sand paper and still had breakage. when I contacted the company we determined it happened because of rough handeling in the shipping department. as the ones I had issues with were sent in the same shipment and amazon didnt do the best job at packing them in the box so they were thrown around....
      You could also tell it was an issue with the cores as they were broke farther up in the barrel vs right at the exposed area

    • @mjpete27
      @mjpete27 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a friend that buys salvage supplies and he has had great luck cooking pencils, I guess this re-formed the core he cooks prisma colors at 300° in the oven for a half an hour. You have to be careful not to burn them, but he has great success and seldom has pencil breaks. He does use manual sharpeners and not electric. But she was not having trouble with sharpening, only breaking as she was using the pencils!

    • @CraftyColourist
      @CraftyColourist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@noneyabuizz9749 The thing is though, pretty much most vids I've watched or reviews I've read say you have to be very careful sharpening Prismacolor pencils, and people still love them.Jennifer even says the same in her comparison video! It sounds like it's just similar here and it makes sense; a super soft core lead is going to have more issues and need more TLC than a harder one. I used a normal metal, handheld sharpener to sharpen all my new 72 set and had no issues at all. I was just gentle and took my time.

    • @noneyabuizz9749
      @noneyabuizz9749 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CraftyColourist I agree. I guess I just felt bewildered that Kevin felt she was bad mouthing Derwent when I didn't hear anything of the sort. She wasn't using a cheap dollar tree pencil eater. I just don't want people to get discouraged from giving honest reviews about products.
      I could see if she had titled the video something like "These pencils are the worst" but even then that is 1 opinion
