Vocalist/Bassist Tom Araya is like a madman shouting dark, twisted tales at us from the gates of Hell, his vocal style has a wicked sense of humor, and Slayer guitar solos are so chaotic and unorthodox, they were fun live, so intense.

If you want to hear where the original "extreme" kind of Metal bands like this got their sound from, check out these 3 bands: Venom, Celtic Frost and Amebix. These 3 bands damn near created extremity in Metal. Venom started it with their 1981 album Welcome to Hell (and subsequent follow up Black Metal, which named that genre of Metal down the line), Celtic Frost are possibly the most influential band in Extreme Metal history, and Amebix were really important to combining Hardcore Punk with Extreme Metal (a bit like Motorhead were with regular Punk and Metal).
The songs I'd recommend from these 3 are Venom - Countess Bathory (1982), Celtic Frost - The Usurper (1985) and Amebix - Sunshine Ward (1983). A lot of people pass over these bands because they're not as famous as bands that took inspiration from them, but if you're interested in the genre's history and development, they cannot be missed. Peace, and keep it heavy!

And since I'm a fan of the most underrated genre of Metal in my opinion, that being DOOM METAL, here's some classic songs from that genre to check out if you want to learn about Doom at any point:
Candlemass - Under the Oak (1986)
      Death SS - Terror (1987)
      Cathedral - Soul Sacrifice (1991)
      Trouble - Psalm 9 (1984)
Paul Chain Violet Theatre - In the Darkness (1986)
Paradise Lost - Deadly Inner Sense (1990)
Witchfinder General - Invisible Hate (1983)
Cirith Ungol - King of the Dead (1984)

      Addition:
Before Celtic Frost, there was Hellhammer. This is the predecessor of CF. Even more extreme than CF and one of the biggest influences for the second Black Metal Wave.
Then there is Sodom. The first EP "In the Sign of Evil" and the first LP "Obsessed by Cruelty" are blue prints for Extreme Metal and absolute favorites among the Extreme Metal scene.
You cant speak about Exteme Metal without talking about Bathory!
For most Black Metal fans and bands, the albums "Bathory", "The Return..." and "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" are absolutely indispensable and the quintessence of Black and Extreme metal.

@@MetalBoozie Great addition, nice "Conspiracy" pfp! I would say To Mega Therion & Monotheist by CF are more extreme than Hellhammer's material personally, but Hellhammer are great too. Sodom were the first band I saw live! And Quorthon was a true genius, one of the best.

@@burningthefields Maybe it depends in how your definition of extreme. Then let me call Hellhammer more raw and primitive then CF and we're fine. 😁

Slayer is no 'real heavy' anymore though. That was their peak of brutality. I also don't get the 'gym playlist' thing, but oh well.
Check out Sepultura - Embrionic Cells. ;)

Check out OverKill's Horrorscope, and/or Armorist. Or if you're real adventerous try old Cannibal Corpse stuff. Tomb of the Mutilated has killer stuff. If youve seen Ace Ventura, youve seen Cannibal Corpse.
Slayer is aquired taste. They're not my faves. They sound better when they slow down a bit IMO. Cheers from Canada eh.
