Thanks for the video. When I was stationed at Loring this area was off limits for most people. As other commenters have noted this area was the weapon storage area. That square building is Building 260 and was used for other purposes. The B52's and KC-135 aircraft were located near the runway. When you made one of your first turns you probably passed what was the Alert Pad where both types of aircraft were on alert, ready to takeoff on a moments notice in case of a Soviet attack. I spent many days at the Alert facility as a KVCC-135 navigator. It was great seeing Loring again. Maybe it's time to visit Aroostook. Appreciate your time and effort, brought back a lot of memories. By the way, the wingspans of the B52's and KC-135's are about 185 and 130 feet respectively, a bit big for the "bunkers". NKAWTG! (Nobody Kicks A** Without Tanker Gas!)
I was stationed there in 1976. The Bunkers were for nuclear weapons storage only. It was known as the “Weapons Storage Area” and it had a double perimeter barbed wire fence patrolled by K-9 units. Inside the fence was a mobile truck with security guards randomly patrolling the area. This area was miles away from the flight line and connected by Oklahoma Rd. I worked the 4-12 and midnight shift. 6 days on 3 days off.
Wow god bless you and thank you ever so kindly for your service 🙏 ❤️ your bravery and endurance is envious. Thanks so much for sharing this with me I truly appreciate it. I have so many questions about this place, also wow what a vivid description of what it was like I literally could picture the guards and the k9s wow. Incredible stuff thanks again. Be well and take good care
Those bunkers are called weapons storage igloos. They are in the WSA weapons storage area the igloos stored hydrogen bombs. The larger buildings were for bomb maintenance early nuclear weapons needed large amounts of work to keep them operational. The WSA was highly protected 24/7 by air security forces.
Fascinating. Early in the video, you mentioned the possibility of encountering armed men. What is there that needs to be protected? What is there to protect us from?
Thank you so much I thought these were awful small but had no idea how big one was up close. I should have known by the width of the doorways. What did they store in these?
@yotagerlie I think most of those were bomb and other storage. You'll definitely know the B52 hangar. It held 6 B52s, it's massive. I delivered milk there before it closed in the 90s
99.8978% of office workers at lunch break: I'm gonna go grab chickpea salad sammich and a tea. Katie: I'm gonna go tour a site that used to house weapons of mass destruction and could cause worldwide megadeath, BRB.
@@AdventuresWithKatieinMaine Haha I would do the same. I was in SAC in the early 80's and I've always been fascinated by nukes, since I was growing up in Tucson. If you ever visit there, make sure to go to the Titan missle museum.
When you go back look closely at the no trespassing signs. At one time there were some very strongly worded ones, the last line of the sign read "Use of Deadly Force Authorized". FYI: The KC-135 Stratotanker was roughly equivalent to the 707, just made to carry fuel instead of passengers.
🎉 Just so we're clear I have no idea what was stored in these bunkers. But this is certainly part of Loring which DID house Aircraft and weapons including missiles as well.
Yes indeed ur right. I had no idea and in the comments since found out what they were for pretty neat stuff I've heard from alot of folks who actually were on base in it's hay day. Cool stuff
In 1989, one of my sergeants was begging me not to pick Loring AFB during a massive realignment with SAC. I had the first choice of the bases available. Loring, Fairchild, and Dyess AFBs The reason was his family lived about 15 minutes outside the front gate. I ummed and hawed I said OK. I hope he retired there.
Jeeze I wonder if that's the building that makes me dizzy. One of these bunkers makes me feel dizzy. And funny enough it used to be open (the inner door) now it's welded shut. But I still got dizzy going in. Hmmmm I'll have to check of that's the building or not interesting and thank you
@yotagerlie YES!! Your in the Q section where are the nuclear weapons were assembled and stored. Stay out of there, radiation will wreck your immune system.
Thank you, I believe this. I went in to dentist got full panel of x rays. Got sick next day. Been sick for 2 weeks now. Finally started taking some homeopathic medicines and my tinctures. I held off long as I could lol radiation is no joke. But it's also emitted by our phones and so much around us too that we don't know about.
Just want you to know a B 52 is 185' wide, 159 ft long and 40' high. You may show it but I would do some research before saying what was in there. My husband was In the airforce and said on bases buildings like that more likely stored missles, and munitions. Buildings planes use need very big doors to get in and out of. The hanger that stored bombers there was 340' wide and 314 ft long.
This facility housed them 100% I am not positive if it's here in these bunkers. Which is why I stated clearly don't quote me. But if you do a wiki search on Loring you will see it housed MANY B-52s and was largest facility of its time . I am certainly no pro. Just sharing the cool bunkers :)
These did probably hold mistles that would make sense again I stated I am not sure and I'm not. Hopefully someone can shed some light on it for me :) who knows the facts better
I know nothing about this but I would bet for every thing you. Zsee at ground level there is probably 3 times as much below ground. Thanks for the lunch time tour

Thank you so much for your response and input I appreciate that very much. And it sparks my imagination of what it was. How interesting
Like your video. We have ridden our snowmobiles all around those bunkers over the years.
Thank you that must me cool in winter on sleds
Wow this place is cool - thanks for taking us along
Thank you for watching sure is a cool place I have so much more to explore out there

This an amazing video thanks so much!!
You're so welcome!
To much snow for me lol i was at Minot
Lol cmahhnnn haha yes .. we do get quite a bit and boy oh boy it's going to be here in no time,
Fascinating. Early in the video, you mentioned the possibility of encountering armed men. What is there that needs to be protected? What is there to protect us from?
The facility has a lot of places where ur not allowed to go. Im not sure who may be watching , but I'm guessing someone. I could be wrong,
@scottandvon, some areas may still be radioactive or environmentally unsafe.
The hangars for the B52s are down by runway. Nice video
Thank you so much I thought these were awful small but had no idea how big one was up close. I should have known by the width of the doorways. What did they store in these?

@@AdventuresWithKatieinMaine I think the Loring Heritage Center is still open. They may be open on Sundays. You'll probably get a lot of answers
That's cool to know thank you!! Sorry I'm just seeing this
Good morning. It has been many years since I have been up there.
Good morning and thank you for watching

I was born in caribou, and raised on that base for 2 years
Thats pretty wild, thank you for sharing

Those are for the ammunition, missles ,and bombs

The bunker you were in is way too small to house a B52 or KC135. Nuclear weapon storage.

Tritium storage in the multi section, tall stack bunkers
Awesome thank you for that info crazy the things that were kept here
Be VERY careful going in the "Q" section where u are. Where u are is where the nuclear accident happened. Bldg 260.
