    This color film is a long advertisement for the Caterpillar No. 14 Series B motor grader and produced by the Caterpillar Tractor Co. The film opens with the grader speedily approaching and passing the camera (:15-25). The grade moves dirt along an edge of a road and shown standing still from multiple angles while its stats are spoken (:26-1:45). Shown grading along a road (2:00-2:15) and spreading earth (2:15-2:30). The blade beam has 5” of clearance,(shown with a tape measure (2:32-2:40). The No. 14 is shown from the front approaching the camera while grading (2:41-2:55). A working comparison is shown side-by side with a No. 12 highlighting the No. 14’s speed (2:56-3:25). The No. 14 grades in fine dirt as well as desert sand (3:26-4:00). A view of the instrument panel is shown, as is the movement of wheels in response to the steering wheel, and the mechanical controls (4:01-4:45). A shoe presses the brakes on and off (4:46-4:55). The view of the cutting edge and front wheel are shown from the operator’s perspective (4:56-5:04). The dirt being displaced heads for the camera and passes at ground level (5:05-5:18). The No. 14 works through a deeper amount of dirt (5:19-5:32). The driver shows the grader’s maneuverability by turning (5:33-5:48). The No. 14 is shown bank sloping (5:49-5:58). The tires are shown (5:59-6:15) as proof the confidence to operate on a slope (6:16-6:28). It uses a dry type air cleaner, which is shown being serviced (6:29-6:50). The engine is turbocharged (6:51-7:14). Attachments include the Preco automatic blade control (7:16-7:44). The features are listed on-screen (7:57-8:17). The film ends with more view of the blade working through various types of dirt (8:18-8:42).

    Thanks, Guys! The 14 was and still is a fine machine but the 12 is more suited for smaller projects.

    I ran all this stuff. yhe last years were on a 140H for the Mohave county road dept.where I maintained 120 miles of desert road with only native material. best all around blade ever bade. that 140M tonka toy won"t move half the dirt that even this old streight frame will!

      I liked the 140h but the 140g was still my favorite.

    Graders have come a long way. I run a Cat 143H and am close to retirement. I have had a full cab my whole career. None of that sitting outside breathing dust crap. Driverless equipment is coming...

    Can someone explain me why thoses models (Cat 12E and 14) not working with hydraulics cilinders but than others marks?
    mechanical system have some advantages, and is better than hydraulics system ?

      Hydraulics are better but were expensive back then. Why Caterpillar stayed with Mechanical for so long, I don't know. Austin-Western had hydraulics on road graders in 1939.

    How in the world is it able to do any of that with 150hp? Obviously torque and gearing, but still, how?

    • @tacomas9602
      @tacomas9602 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Automotive horsepower doesn't compare to tractor horsepower because of how slow these engines spin.

    • @tacomas9602
      @tacomas9602 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It has 150 horsepower but it probably puts out 700 lb feet of torque and does it under 2500 rpm, just like our farm tractors
