Jimmy likes them to the point that athletes are celebrities he can bother for a picture. You’ll notice it a ton when he takes callers, no matter what the show is talking about or why the caller called in, Opie will often bring the show to a halt to ask the caller about how the sports team from whatever city they’re calling from is doing. Just so desperate to be interesting.
Opie would have been great if he knew his place. Some of his ideas for events and bits (the ones he didn’t try to force)were great… however the dude could just have sat back, felt when a topic was dying out and then bring something else up and start a new topic and kept the flow going. The dude had a golden ticket to a multimillion dollar paycheck and had to do hardly anything other then not step on toes and keep the show moving. Pride comest before the fall as they say. Do just enough to not be replaceable, but recognize when it’s your time and place.
