Did you see in the Wiki article that kids in his high school called him 'Dahmer,' due to his interests in Dahmer? He also killed a cat and kept the head in his house for 3 days. The parents may not have known which way this kid was going to go, but they certainly knew he wasn't normal.

His father was kind of an awkward person but I feel he was normal. For this boy to admit what he did, goes to show he has no remorse. A person that shows no remorse leads me to believe he would do it again. I am glad he was caught, thanks to his mom. It is really sad. Bless the man and his family that lost his life.

He talks in his head like Hannibal Lecter, but it comes out like Dwight from The Office. That sums up his whole personality. This weird little Ed Gein of a loner, dork, senselessly murdered a beloved, truly valued member of the small community of Grand Junction. Heartbreaking. AND, got busted by accidentally losing his car in the river, because he's a genuine moron. Useless! Damn.

Before I had first hand experience with an 'awkward' family member I said the same thing. But now I have to say 'not necessarily'. There are soooo many variables that play in.
I do agree that some ppl ( parents ) sweep it under the rug until here we are.
I think this kid is def a sociopath! Zero remorse. His flat affect is the autism. The lack of any remorse screams sociopath.

7:45 Most of the time when a sentence is lesser for a charge there is this element of "well if we are wrong your life isn't FULLY forfeit". There's no question here, he is admitting to the crime negating all plausible deniability. In cases where detectives have to work and get confessions out of people who maintain their innocence, there ARE many cases that send people to prison on nothing other than one persons word against another.. The Central Park 5 are victims of this. 15 years and sentences where it seems light for the crime such as killing someone tend to be reserved for those who were convicted of the crime, but left some wiggle room to maybe make parole in case the system was wrong. This isn't one of those situations.

He’s proud of himself. He thinks he’s fascinating. “I hope my audience sufficiently appreciates my brilliance.”
His deliberate, affected speech pattern makes me think he’s writing his own novel in his mind, as author and star, researching and investigating.
And when doing the reenactment, he’s in his glory! He gets to relive every moment, every giddy sensation!
“You set yourself a goal and you achieved it!”
      “Congratulations, you’re a murderer.”
“So accomplished, at such a young age!”
