Laird Hamilton rides largest wave of the day. Surfer rides the wave at least 400 yards and then shoots the pier at the end with at least double overhead set. EPIC!

I could not imagine trying to get a wave in that lineup. Went there once and it was barely overhead, got dropped in on million times and almost got into fistfight Not a fun place

That is why he is considered the "Best".
Best at what? He's never won a single WCT or ASP event. He's the best at self promotion. All the socalled great stuff he did on Tow in is now being done by guys paddling in. Don't believe the hype. People have been shooting the pier at 1st point since the 1950's.
Brian Luce He shot that HUGE WAVE on a Paddle Board. He is the BEST at Paddle Boarding not necessarily at surfing.
mpgxsvcd That's not exactly a huge wave. Best every SUP'r? Maybe, that's an ignominious title though. The SUP thing is widely considered a plague by members of the surf community and Laird's promotion of the sport hasn't done him favors.

Why is he considered "the best"? Well, for several reasons one of which is he sorted out how to ride the largest of waves. Surfers could not paddle fast enough to catch em, and he figured out (and did it) that you need to be dragged up to speed (surf ski or such) before letting go. Plus, he has surfed the giant waves and been a great rider for so many years. I doubt he would call himself "the best" as he is a modest guy from all accounts. He is also a great role model with his dignity and bravery (just saved a life yesterday I think it was). No cameras, just swam out there by himself and put it on the line for another guy. Hard not to like and respect him.
I dont know if im more impressed with Laird shooting the pier.. or the girl in the white shorts.

I liked how the guy shoots the girls ass and tries to look like he's not.
Many camcorders zoom in automatically, he was aiming at the starting point of Lairds Wave in the begining of the video, and decided to reach out to that point, and as it is at all Cali Beaches, a very beautiful female is in the center, alone with her puppy, and the zoom sets in,and " what is one to do '... well the cam is working just fine so we make a small adjustment again aiming for the surfers in the background washing out, and to make things even better.. a nice ending to a nice film, with the Cali Female as another reminder why we like the Beach... all of us, I might point out, and what I see here is perhaps jealousy... that those that cannot get to the beach... have no concept about morality actually, morality begins with your choice of words, and the consequences of using such words to demean a beautiful 20 year old plus or minus two years, and a public outcry is in order for the way you chose to define her, her father would be pissed about that as I am, and others are... she has no control of these consequences.. yet we do, and to let her be berated for being there is unbearable to many.. Amen Amen

Laird is the best. As a kid gromming around the local shop he strolled in (friends with the owner) and he was so nice. I'm surprised he fit under the pier the man is a mountain.

Second biggest day I have ever seen at Malibu, waves were solid 9-10 foot. In September of 1995 they were solid 11-12 foot, biggest I know of ever at Malibu.
I remember this hurricane swell i was living in venice and we had massive waves. This may be one of the best malibu waves i have ever seen.

It takes really big swells to get a big enough wave to make it to the pier. While I've surfed point one and three I've never shot the pier. One, swells were never big enough while I was there. Two, I have no desire to possibly hurt myself because I'm definitely not a pro. Three, it's illegal and you will be cited. It's also illegal to jump off the pier into the water, also dangerous. While I think this video is super cool, kids, don't shoot the pier. Leave it to professionals like Laird Hamilton and just enjoy watching.
Mary, I grew up there, One winter a swell was breaking in FRONT of the pier. There's was water sloshing across the top of the pier and draining down the sides in sheets.
I jumped off the pier the other week haha
