Another excellent video. If I was to add anything, a higher nitrogen fertilizer, similar to the addition for phosphorus, is also good...get that green growth before they bulb...yields bigger bulbs...

Great video, Gary. Was just wondering about this last night. Is the process (minus spacing and such) similar for green onions/scallions?

Why?
@@SpiceyKy I never seam to get onions bigger than golf balls, if that even. They tend to fall over prematurely and never seam to do well for me. I’ve tried sets, seeds, and transplants.
@@thebeave0630 What are you doing for fertilizer? 20-20-20 or something close for the first few feedings then you want to pour on the nitrogen 15-0-0 or close. Stop feeding when bulbs form. I don't know what zone you live in but start your transplants early. Onions are pretty tough. My last frost date is May 5 but I plant in March of I can. The earlier you can plant the better. Check out Lazy dog farm on TH-cam for great onion videos.
@@thebeave0630 You could be doing a lot of things wrong. You have to pick onions for your zone. Never use sets. Start them very early. Fertilize the heck out of them. Make sure they get enough sun. Never cut the tops once they are planted and give them plenty of water. I do all of the above and still end up with small onions. I just can't figure them out...
I wish I saw this before I transplanted my onions last week! I did the opposite and gave the roots a haircut instead of the foliage 😞 Thank you for the very informative and detailed video!! 👍
The should still make it. Good luck. They are hardy.

Don't cut your onion plants. Ever.
😮
What fish immersion fertilizer do you use? This is my first time planting onions. I planted in the fall with small bulbs. I have no idea...
THanks Gary. Made my notes and will be planting Short day here in Delaware. BUT I won't be planting next to peas like I did last year. Opps...not a good combo.
Interesting. I never did that but am curious now. I might toss in a few peas to watch what happens.

Good tips on the trimming and water bath. The bonemeal has me a bit confused though. The agricultural extension office sites I have looked at all say more nitrogen based nutrients or a balanced fertilizer. One even specifically called for nitrogen and potassium at planting and no phosphorus at all. Is the bonemeal just for establishment of the roots at planting, then you add nitrogen later (I have seen that with planting garlic in the fall with phosphorus) , or are you adding extra phosphorus throughout it's growing season?
The balanced fert is in there. And I compost. I found, and maybe I generalized over time to onions, bulbing crops seem to like some extra phosphorous. I only use it at set up for the year. Everything you saw is at planting. Fish emulsion feeding are regular for ongoing nitrogen. I think I mention I watered it in with that. And I do plant my garlic in those beds too.

Thank you Gary. When starting onions from seed indoors, how many hours of light do you give them per day? I’m in a intermediate to long day zone if that matters in the beginning.

Can I use 13*13*13 granular fertilizer?
Thank you. Just got my onion sets so this was very timely. Amazon wrote and they are not sure when they will ship ur book. Do you think I would have better luck at Barnes and Nobel or one of the other distributors?
Thanks for the book order. Shipping is messed up due to Covid. My latest update says around 4/13. So it isn't the stores due to California shipping docks. It is available electronically though. Very frustrating.
What would happen if I planted onions in the fall around the time I plant garlic? Would they just go to seed in the spring thinking they've lived 2 years or?...
Good info, did you catch that holly food on clearance at Lowe's?
Oh yeah. 15 bags and a ton where left at the store when I go them in Jan. LOL when I say on sale, I really mean it.

Do you mulch around your onions when they are transplanted?
Hello thanks for this helpful message. I have two questions:
1. What soil did you used for your seedlings? And how do you care for them indoor?
2. What’s your soil mixture for your raised bed?
Please help me out. Thanks so much in advance.
Onions were planted in Jiffy Starting Mix. Raised beds is all kinds of stuff. Search my channel for making your own container mix. Youll see my process. How do you care for them indoors... I have a whole playlist on my channel. It explains it all.

Hi Gary, when is the best time to fertilize the oinions, when starting from seed? Mine are about 2inches tall now.
Should you just fertilize when they go out to the garden, or?
Thanks:)
Now is good time. After 10-14 days from germination, a light feeding is fine.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I have a Juliette tomato plant that is still producing such delicious fruit from 2020 spring but looks brown and dead. I want to save it if possible because here in Bakersfield I can't find another. It is very stragglers no leaves on the lower 4 to 5 feet. Can I transplant in another location and how?
So the tomatoes send surface roots all over. Transplanting an established plant is hard. I would cut off all dead grow and prune back some stems. Give it a huge feed of water soluble nitrogen. See if leaves start showing. If it is somewhat cold, it may take time

Thank you for your informative video. I'm a subscriber and have a question. Could I use 10-10-10 as a slow release fertilizer when I make my soil mix? Is that too strong? That was the only fertilizer left available at my local store😞.
Thank you so much for your kind help💖🙏
It is not too strong. It wont hurt. That is fine to use. If you are on a budget, you just cut it in half. If it says 1 cup per 10 square feet... just use 1/2 cup per 10 square feet and it is like using a 5-5-5. Good luck. and thanks for subscribing.

QUESTION: Gary I was told onions seeds grown indoors can be moved outside 4 weeks before final frost date. The seed pack doesn't indicate that. What do you usually do?
That is about right. They can take a frost well. They may not do much but they can go our early.

I think they would

I am in long day latitude 5a. The onions should start bulbing about June 20th around summer solstice. What should we be fertilizing with at the bulb stage?
I would think bone meal for phosphorous. Do the more mature greens need to be trimmed if they get too long or floppy or knocked about by wind?
Also I noticed you had Holly Tone fertilizer which I believe is for acid loving plants. Do onions like acidic soil?
Bone meal is fine but you should get it down early because it has to break down. You probably want a water soluble with P and K

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I just trimmed select greens yesterday as they were bent from the wind. I covered the onions to protect from anymore rain as we are getting a surprising amount. The onions seems to be getting too much of a good thing and are quite tender and long. I will remove the cover once rain stops. I had a light covering of straw to keep moisture in and protect the onions from wind and cold and removed that as well to allow more air to soil. We have sandy soil, but the beds are amended. I think the onions need nitrogen to start, but by June 20th they need more phosphorus and possibly potash? Just curious of how much trimming should be done on more mature onions? I just selectively trimmed the bent fronds.
Good info! I'm getting ready to transplant my onions outside in zone 9b for overwintering. I found short day onions work best for me. I prep the bed the same way you do along with a bag of aged compost from a big box store. It took me a couple of seasons to get it right so my onions wouldn't bolt but I finally have it dialed in.
Thats the way to do it. Experiment and figure out what works. Nice.

How much fish emulsion would I use to water in?

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I just planted onions on the 18th is it to late to water with the fish emulsion?
Nope. Give them a drink.
When I plant my onions I use a worm casting, or compost extract to moisten the roots. Just me.
Casting are great. Thanks

Hi Gary. I’ve had to trim down the tops of my onions, they get too tall and the seed sticks to the tip as well. The tips begin to turn white after I have trimmed them. Is that normal? Thankyou
Normal and I just let them grow. All these in the video looked like that.

I have a big plastic container that's about 3 and 1/2 in deep could you say that would be okay to plant onions thank you sir
IT might be a little shallow. Roots will fill up the space quickly. I would try a few. The issue is the soil dries out fast.

I do. It varies but 1 or 2x a month on different crops.

Your onions are so much thicker than mine. Mine have been growing indoors from seed since late Jan, but they're spindly compared to yours. What do you think it is? I gave them water soluble fertilizer, but only about once every other week. I have them under LED shop lights. Should I have started them earlier, like Dec? I'm in NC zone 8a.
You arent doing anything wrong. These just took off over last 2 weeks.

Do onions do well in deep mulch?
If it is something they can grow roots in it's probably okay. But if it is heavy wood or really thick, they probably need more soil.

I bought short day onions but I live in Wisconsin with like 12 hours of light 😯. Well they die or get more big??
I'm in Nebraska and am in long day territory. You can still make green onions outa those you have.

You say sunlight to zone. More specifically is sunlight to growing spit for onion. You can be in a zone that says 14-16 hrs sun, but if your bed gets 10-12, you do short day. Sadly, that fact is skipped all the time.
