  • Gardening Tips: Starting Onions from Seedlings
    There are 3 methods for planting onions: Seeds, Sets or Seedlings. Choosing to plant your onions in your garden this year using onion seedlings will give you the best crop by far! You can either grow your own onion seedlings under lights or buy them from a grower online. But either way you will be much happier with the results if you fill your garden with onion seedlings! This video shows you how to plant your onions seedlings.
    This video comes to you from Rick Stone and the blog Stoney Acres. It is part of our ongoing gardening video series called "Grow What you Eat, Eat what you Grow"!

    Great information Rick! It just made me chuckle a bit when you were talking about a cold climate while planting seedlings in March. March is winter in real cold climate. I just seeded my onion seedlings indoors last week, they have plenty of time to grow till our garden is not solid frozen and covered in snow anymore. Enjoy your garden and keep up the good work.

      Yes, it's all a matter of perspective. I will write a Zone 5/6 planting guide on my blog some times and I will be very specific to say it is for zones 5 & 6. Then I will get people living in Southern California saying how worthless the guide is because they "planted all that stuff months ago"! LOL
      We have had a SUPER warm spring this year. I usually don't plant my seedlings until about March 30th. But they are arriving today (March 17th) and I'm putting them out in the morning. They might get a little snow on them later in the spring, but they are hardy and can handle it!!

    I think I planted my onions too deep about 6 weeks ago. Is there anything I can do now?

    Watering info??? I am thinking of using a drip line or overhead sprayer. How often? I live in NorCal and will plant these in a raised bed. Thanks!

      Drip is always best. How often will 100% on your weather. Just make sure the soild stays evenly moist.

    Hi, what company did you buy the onions from? I would like to buy some to plant next year.

    What about watering them? I noticed in your “shovel” cleaning tips, that you have a clay soil. How do you fight that within the cold frame? Potatoes need (I thought) very good drainage, and adequate water.
    Also, I’ve been recently relegated to an apartment with a balcony, in Virginia. Could I use a mini-cold frame on it, if I insulated under it all? I’ve gardened all my life, but now am “older than dirt” 😉 , but the balcony (southern exposure) gives me hope. Also, what spices does your wife use for her cream sauce? I was always taught that “you can’t cook it until you grow it”, so of course, I wart her “recipe”. We used to do creamed peas with “armored heifer” (condensed milk), with a garlic salt, butter, flour roux that has been lifelong favorite! Using home grown peas, of course! Now I want to try the home grown potatoes with it! Thanks for posting your videos!!! Blessings!!!

      My potatoes do just fine in our clay soil. I do add compost to the trenches when I plant. A cold frame or a small hoop should do well on your balcony. But I'm not sure how cold you get in Virginia. If you have long spells below freezing then it is pretty hard to keep the soil in containers from freezing.

    Does the fish fertilizer, attract skunks and raccoons?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not in my experience. The scent goes away in just a day. But we don't have a lot of skunks and raccons in our area.

    What do you mean onions are two year plants? Does this mean we dont get onions until the second year?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they are bi-annual plants, they grow bulbs in the first year (the onion that we eat) if left in the ground they will grow a flower and produce seeds in year 2.
