Lack of features aside (which still blows my mind given how long they have had), one of my biggest issues was how quickly (specifically Tim Sweeney) went from "We want to be a competent competitor to Steam" to "We will do whatever is necessary to destroy Steam". I'm all for competition (especially if it gets Valve to fix things), but I have 16 years of amazing memories on Steam and saying you basically want to take them down doesn't quite inspire me to spend money on your storefront.

@@Arxgxmi it has more to do with what Epic has done.
Epic's attitude on swiping games to be an exclusivity deal has soured people
Especially when they tried to get a game from a developer, but the developer dared show some integrity to actual make a compromise with Epic while keeping to his promise to his supporters.
Epic didn't like that. And it really torpedoed their slogan of "being for the developer."

You're not the only one. They got sued for that and privacy violations and had to pay out over $500 million. Seems they don't mind letting kids buy whatever they want to but when the parents complain and demand their money back, Epic would refuse to refund and lock their accounts. BUT Epic hates it when others try to get more money out of them and sued Apple and Google for "taking too much" of the revenue cut. Otherwise you’ve got publisher storefronts like Origins, which tend to be clunky, and EGS, which somehow launches without a shopping cart and ignores every Steam should have taught them.

I still remember how I was hopeful for Epic making positive changes on the market as i considered the addition of another big player on the market would force both of them to improve. "More competition = more improvement" type of thinking... How wrong i was back then.
Epic offers literally nothing better than Steam did for years, their claim that smaller sale split would make games cheaper was a total lie, genuinely making selling games for smaller devs an actual hustle...
For me the only 2 reasons why you would ever want to visit the store (outside of playing Fortnite) are a slue of free games and exclusives and even then I don't go there.
The only *GOOD* things i can think of is are:
-small indie devs get that crucial boost of cash, ensuring that they can focus on making and improving their games without the fear of going bankrupt in the process
-once the exclusivity is over and the game finally arrives on Steam, i know I'm getting a better product that what Epic users got on launch. Less bugs, more polish, eventual DLC already being added.
Even those "good" things only profit me as a Steam user further down the line.

problem is epic exclusivity deals has killed games, especially multiplayer
nearly all epic exclusivity deal sold less than 100K units, and when it release on steam it sold more (or even double) of the units sold on the timed exclusivity deal
but being that hype for the game is usually at the peak when nearing and upon launch, active player count is abysmal for any competitive multiplayer game
playing in the first 1 year is basically like queueing an unpopular game that has some marketing (maybe only beyond the first month or so)
then after 1 year, since majority of the pre-existing playerbase has moved on to another game. new players on steam still has to struggle to queue for games especially in areas outside US
US may have a lot of people, but active communities throughout the globe is still more player count than just US for a rather popular game
i'm happy for the devs of dead island 2 that they didn't have to waste all those hears in development for nothing, but there's just too few audience to justify continuing long term support for the game or make another game in the franchise (spin-off or otherwise)
it's more likely that if the devs could financially fund the development of another game that they'll try out "new things", likely different direction, genre, even maybe art style as they probably lost the confidence in the dead island franchise financially (and business needs money to survive)

Hell, you don't even need to have it downloaded to get the free games, logging in from the browser already gets it done. They just lack any actual features to actually compete with Steam (like all of the other useless launchers), and their exclusivity deals just hurt the industry instead of supporting it, hurting the newly launched games in the process as well

But they are just small. I don’t think the exclusivity is a bad thing, it’s a launcher and needs ways of other people coming to their store.

@@Thornskade for me, the biggest reason i don't like EGS isn't because it's a launcher.... i mean, i could stand having to use uplay, origin, rockstar social club, etc and a few games with their own dedicated launcher
it's that exclusivity deal on epic most of the time means the game doesn't do well financially, even if the game isn't to my taste it's just a bit unfair to the people that do care about the game
it's the inherent actively playing user spread is terrible on EGS to the point that it's more like a fortnite launcher that you can also buy and launch other games with it, instead of a game launcher
general horrible performance too, i give it a pass when it first got traction but not after years of the bare minimum of improvement
in software development, it's like EGS has only went up by 1 major version in years with the main feature being a shopping cart which is a basic feature of any digital storefront that i even made for an e-commerce prototype back when i was learning programming in under 2 weeks
then the general anti-consumer behavior epic games has, such as tim sweeney admitting that if apple made a special exempt for fortnite to not have to pay a percentage of the skin microtransaction income that he would drop the lawsuit (basically admitting "i want more money, but it's ok if the other doesn't benefit")
a terrible mislead mentioning lower profit cut percentage for games sold on EGS would "reduce games prices", i caught unto it immediately that game prices stay the same and publishers would just make more profit
finally, it just seems like EGS likes to blame others or put other down to make them look good, a few examples being:
      - no user review because "review bombing", review bombing only happens if the dev/publisher does not respect the players so this isn't good for user, it's good for making more money for bad publishers and bad devs
      - putting steam (a competitor) in a bad light with the "steam takes 30% of profit for game sales" when 30% was the industry standard then had the audacity to claim that "[EGS] will stop buying so much exclusivity when steam lower their profit cut" then steam did overall lower it, but look at epic still buying exclusivity
      - claiming apple predatory practice of taking a cut of profit on every sale that is processed through their app store, suing apple claiming that [epic] is doing a good thing for every devs on ios devices but then admit that if apple just don't take a cut from fortnite microtransaction sales while also apple would not give the special privilege to any other dev, [epic] would gladly take it and the lawsuit would've never happened
it's not a big problem at once, it's just [epic] is going in the direction of even more anti-consumer 1 major step at a time ever since they struck gold with fortnite (even then fortnite alone cannot sustain epic forever, all games eventually die out and nobody is sure how tf2 is still alive)
but that's all just my personal opinion, and it's not my business what launcher people uses

    • @Thornskade

How is Epic Games anti-consumer? The lawsuit was legitimate and against the anti-consumer behavior of Apple, rather. They also technically won as the EU is already forcing Apple to allow third-party software on their devices. I would never touch an Apple device because it would never truly have been my hardware and basically be under full control of Apple so it's funny to me you're using that to call Epic anti-consumer instead, it makes no sense.

Microsoft store was ditched for the Xbox launcher and again had subscription services to play games. GOG is nice cause they have an awesome roster of classic games and they offer numerous compatibility patches for them all as well as the DRM Free stuff. Epic is just like you said the Fortnite launcher w/ free games you can't even set a custom profile picture on there at least the last time I checked which is so bizarre.

Which are, like the video stated, likely already for sale on Steam for a very low price, or end up staying untouched anyway. At that rate just pirate them tbh.

A month or two ago, I was going to get UE5 to dig through some game files, and as soon as I saw I needed to ALSO have the Epic Launcher JUST TO INSTALL UE5, I immediately stopped caring. I can literally just go find a file dump online somewhere. The only reason I put in the work to do this kinda thing myself is because I genuinely enjoy seeing the inner-workings of games.

You can call out the store whatever you want.
But the amount of actual quality AAA games that'll go on FREE alone is the sole reason i can tolerate it amongst other launchers and somewhat makes it worth it,Especially considering how stupidly expensive they are in other regions.
Like i don't remember Steam/GOG gave away games like the entire Bioshock collection,Prey,Sonic Mania,Metro,Nioh,Wolfenstien,Control,Death Stranding etc for Free.
and Ya know what ? I kinda wanna give some credit and thank EPIC for letting me play those gems.

    • @GattiJuanIgnacio
      @GattiJuanIgnacio ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@utfigyii5987 Steam is ALWAYS the best bet. The thing with epic is that it's pretty bloody good when you are in a pretty specific situation to buy something from steam. Like your country, let's say Argentina.
For example, RE8 in Steam Arg. Costs around ARS$3.400 pesos, plus the taxes that apply to your purchase, it increase it's price to ARS$4098,36 pesos (if i'm not wrong) which roughly could be translated to $18.7992 US dollars. (Again, if i'm not wrong). Not to mention that Capcom was kind enough to rise their prices here due to people using Argentina as a way to buy capcom newest games at a cheaper price, but also Argentina, being as self destructive as it is when it comes to economy, making steam remove various paying methods to buy on steam.
TL:DR; Use steam as your main gaming platform, use Epic as your random Free Triple A drug seller. And remember. Don't drink and drive.

5:14 oh look. I see we can have friends list on Epic Games launcher. But I feel that it misses some things, like archivements, community, discussions, and other. And look to the right. Honkai Star Rail... I see Hoyoverse/miHoYo is in love with Epic Games, that's why Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail never been released on Steam... Except Honkai Impact 3rd, Honkai Impact 3rd is the only one game who is on Steam... But fortunately for me, Honkai Star Rail is coming on PlayStation, so thanks Hoyoverse, I guess.
