    I have this antenna in my attic, and your review of its capability is spot-on, Tyler. In my case, I am about 25 or so miles away from the broadcast towers, and this antenna works well for my situation.
    As someone who worked at Radio Shack when I was a kid, I was used to selling very large, rather well built TV antennas. It is saddening to see what passes today as an average or even above average build quality antenna. They would have been laughed off the market back in the day...

    A lot of people don't realize you can stick an antenna in the attic. Much better than smaller indoor antenna.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can even put two of them in the attic.
      In a lot of places you have some channels "over in that direction" and some "over in that other direction". Using a "splitter" to combine the two outputs can be a great solution to get a strong signal from both groups. The attic usually has enough room to do it.

    • @danbasta3677

      True, however your best signal strength quality is on the outside of your home.

    awwww my first antenna. I bought it over 2 1/2 years ago and tried so so hard to get it to work. I still have it down in the office . Its good for playing around with. I totally agree with your assessment. The RCA ANT705E is just a better attic antenna, and happens to be the one I'm running now.

    In general I skip to the part where you present the antenna, reception test and give the final verdict is it worth buying or not, but it's a great idea that in every video you explain the basics (no such thing as HD or 4K antenna, differences between VHF and UHF, Channel Number) for the new subscribers.

      Yeah I feel the same way. Most of us don't need the education about VHF/UHF or digital or high-definition etcetera but some people just tuning in would like an explanation so it's good.

      I have no problem with my subscriber skipping most parts of the video. As you know I have to mention the HD/VHF/UHF bit in every antenna review because many of my viewers only watch that one video and nothing else.

    Some people would probably be fooled by the "GE" branding (this doesn't even seem to bear the official "GE" round logo, which many used to call the "GE Meatball").
    GE is now a shadow of what it once was: An American industrial force with which to be reckoned in the early to mid Twentieth Century, manufacturing everything from heavy industrial electrical generating equipment to household major and minor appliances and consumer electronics that were dependable, sturdy, and high quality.
    The trend finally hit GE, as it did other American stalwart brands such as Westinghouse, RCA, Admiral, where the original parent company spun off different divisions and allowed manufacturers of substandard products to paste the licensed brand name on their products for a "licensing fee" of the brand name. Thank you for your review. Your work is so informative and helps us, the consumers, from being taken by these companies.

    Many newer homes have roof decking that is lined with foil. It would be very interesting for AM to compare a good antenna in an attic with no foil to another attic with foil.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In general a foil barrier will likely kill your signal. No reason to test antennas that way - I simply test all antennas in the same location on a pole attached to my roof.

      I concur. That said, I have tried two different antennas in my radiant barrier roof and still nearly 50 channels. UHF is near flawless, but VHF is an issue. I can get Fox San Antonio on UHF and much farther away better than I can get Fox Austin on VHF much closer. The SA channel is actually BEHIND the antenna as well.

  • @Nicholas_Chris
    @Nicholas_Chris 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    For a stable reception I recommend for UHF receptoion a 10 elements antenna for high to medium signal or 19 elements for medium to weak signal and 44 elements for weak to extremely weak signal, for VHF reception I recommend a 4 elements for high to medium signal, a 13 elements for medium to weak signal and 11 elements for weak to extremely weak signal and I only recommend Yagi or Log antennas. VHF+UHF combiners and a splitter with adjustable gain amplifier is mandatory and these are my recommendations and are based from my tests and others. You do a great job showing us what's the difference between a real antenna and a knock off, most of the antennas are unfortunately knock offs. Unfortunately those who recently cut off cable and pay satellite TV fall into this trap with 36K 240 fps Dolby digital 12.1 surround sound antennas that can receive more than 500 miles (to make a small joke). I do not recommend installing an antenna in the attic I had bad experience especially with UHF band but if you don't have other options I recommend an antenna that is designed for medium to weak signal or weak to extremely weak signal.

      @@diycarhome9151 Vertical is the wrong polarization for TV broadcasts.
      Once you get clear of any obstructions in the line of sight, more height doesn't improve matters.
      12 inches is too short.
      One of the TV stations is on RF channel 5 so it is in the 76-82MHz range. To compute the wavelength use 79MHz and the equation
      L = 300/79 = 3.8 Meters
      The ideal antenna for this would be 1/2 of that or 1.7meters
      BTW: There is a quite funny case of someone waaaaaaaaay out at the fringe who found that there was a spot where his antenna got a lot of stations that was just on the railing of his deck. Higher didn't work at all. Something about the local geography focused the radio waves.

      Nicholas, element count is kind of nebulous. Because there are different ways of counting elements. For example the 91xg claims to have 91 elements. On some UHF antennas the elements are just single rod elements. Do you count both sides of the rods on the Boom?
      On some Hi VHF antennas like the 30-2476, usually the single rod element is counted as one. Element count is just a marketing tool to be honest.

    • @guytech7310
      @guytech7310 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Issue with Yagi is they are extreme directional antenna, to the point which you can only receives stations from a single broadcast tower. The GE, or flat UHF antennas are much less narrow and can recieve from multiple towers if they are with in about a 30 to 70 degree arc. With the YAGI you need a lot of antennas, need to point them pretty accurately, and need to address the multiple antenna issue with reflections (off buildings, mountains, etc) as well as phase offsets (balanced cable lengths between antennas) to avoid interference.

    Great starter antenna, low price and good results. I've had this model 18" off the ground next to the gas meter and the HOA hasn't seen it yet😆 However, after a few years I was having problems holding signals and pixelation; replaced longer cable runs with no splices without improvement, then simply ordered a new antenna. Success!! The new one did the trick, 85 regular and 12 NEXTGEN channels. My conclusion is that they are not going to last 5, 10, 15 years but a great bang for the buck at $10 bucks per year.

    I think the terminology of attic antenna fit's this one perfectly because it would never withstand the elements Outdoors. I can't imagine what would happen to the elements when it got a layer of ice on it. I think the wind could beat this one up pretty good too. Although it could be mounted outside in a mild climate with very moderate average wind speed. For most of the country It could only survive in an attic. Good review Tyler keep them coming!

    I got a few of these for $10 without the reflector part (on clearance from 20) from a regional hardware store. It does good at my parents and conditions pending I've picked up stations one night from Kansas City (250 mi). And where I live now I can easily pick up the station I work for and the others, with occasionally picking up Omaha stations in a valley 60 miles away. They work well outside despite saying attic only and for the price and the mounting hardware it came it I'm not complaining. Moving next month and hope to take advantage of the location for a new antenna.

    I have this antenna - as well as the RCA ANT751R antenna. I am about 10-15 miles away from the major broadcast networks. The biggest issue I have is tree interference, but for the most part I get decent reception on both antennas but the RCA is the better of the two I believe. I agree totally on the build quality - I would not mount this antenna outside, as it simply is not built to withstand what the weather would throw at it. However, I wouldn't smash this antenna - it is designed and built with quality appropriate to an indoor (attic) installation and is marketed and name explicitly as an "attic" antenna.

    I have one of these too, just mounted on a stand next to the TV. While it works well enough on the UHF stations, and the one hi-VHF, the local low power station has moved from uhf 14 to VHF-3. Even with the power boost they made, reception is spotty. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes nothing at all. I have this antenna mounted on a 60 foot pole. So far no issues with the durability but its only been mounted for about 3 months. I have it pulling in stations with an RF amp from about 80 miles away, but I am on a high area and also its mounted 60 feet on a pole. I have one of the other Antennas compared with this antenna which is receiving stations 120 miles away (with RF amp).
    FYI: Currently I am able to receive stations from three areas (my local and two metro areas that are about 100 miles away - in different directions). The only issue is that there isn't a lot of variety of channels after the past two FCC repacks. Most of the areas broadcast the same channels (MeTV, ION, Charge, Comet, DABL, etc). which is unfortunate.
    I looked into the possibility of go with free satellite TV, but the only free channels are the same I get with with my antennas (MeTV, ION, Charge, DABL, etc).

    • @guytech7310
      @guytech7310 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A long cable between the antenna and the receiver will result in signal loss, especially with a cheap cable. For instance, an RG-59 cable will lose about 7 DB for every 100 feet. An RG-5 will lose about 4 DB for every 100 feet. Also every connector installed will also reduce signal strenght (between 2 and 5 db per connector).
      The best option is to install an RF amp near the antenna so the single strength remains strong in the long cable length. If you have a Steel core\copper clad coax) your best option would be to run a DC cable to RF amp rather than using coax power (as antenna man recommend).

    I'm doing some bench testing in my kitchen, turns out a 200mile Yagi is a dud, or doesnt fit my needs. Even with a Channel master -pre amp, doesn't do as good as a used $30 GE 60 mile - no amp. My test rig is a 13" TV and a JZBox converter - no remote but enough buttons on the front to get to the signal strength meter, which is pretty good. A Channel master 11+ preamp is not a wow, but did get two extra bars with the Yagi, so that preamp is working. And again the GE gave me an extra 5 - 8 bars without an preamp. I haven't tried the GE with the CM3412, maybe my house will catch on fire! lol
    I guess I'm looking for a indoor attic antenna - maybe I could stack two of the cheap GE?

      @@AntennaMan In the last year, you’ve done two or three reviews of strictly indoor antennas. That is not what I call several. I know you absolutely hate flat antennas. You have stated that many times on your channel. Well how about backing up your words with action. Why don’t you do a video demonstrating how to use and hook up a flat antenna for those of us who do live in apartments. I have a flat antenna on my main TV and it picks up over 60 channels including all the major channels. Furthermore on my second TV I have a eight dollar rabbit ears antenna I picked up at Best Buy and it takes up over 50 channels. My point here is that not all flat antennas are garbage. Some of them work very well. A good reviewer would point that out. How about doing a video on the best rabbit ears antennas. A lot of those work very well.
      I know you are limited by TH-cam what you can show on a TV screen, but I am sure you can figure out a way to demonstrate how well they work for those kind of antennas as well as the outdoor antennas that you definitely favor.

      This GE antenna will work indoors. I had one attached to a pole that was seated in a 5 gallon bucket of sand with 6' lead to a bedroom television. The pole could be rotated by hand to change direction. Since then I've changed to a more permanent solution with a Wineguard antenna fastened outside to the eave of my home (with concealed wiring). The Wineguard feeds into a pair of amplified splitters that improve signal strength.

    I have the other version of this with the triangle shaped dipoles paired with an amplifier. My reception is nearly perfect and I live in a very poor reception area. Granted I have an old home with a high attic, which is where it's mounted, and I agree this shouldn't be mounted outside. It's perfect for an attic mount setup. It works OK without an amplifier but my VHF stations 11 and 13 are too weak to be stable without the amp. I also have an LTE filter installed for good measure and both the amp and distribution amp are on a Tripp Lite line filter. VHF 11 and 13 don't like line noise from motors and light ballasts.

    Some points to ponder about the margin of error when testing antennas. It would be a better performance test if the antennas were all tested within the same season over a period of at least 2 weeks or more for an average of the results of signal strength. Leaves on trees vs none in the Winter create a broad difference in signal reception. Weather also has a big influence. For example, an antenna’s signal reception value of 100% at 50 miles during Winter months may drop by a quarter to half of that value (25-50%)in the Summer months due to leaves. That being said, there can be quite a margin of error within your performance tests from season to season. The 2 week test average would have varying signal results due to weather and also would deliver a nice average of that time frame causing the seasonal average(Winter vs Summer) to vary + or - 10 units on the reception bar graph. In a nutshell, there is a large possible margin of error when and where you test antennas. I’ve built and tested antennas for over 40 years and have an Amateur Extra class license.

    Another indicator that this antenna has poor performance is the 12 elements that make-up the reflector are not electrically connected to each other. Instead, the reflector elements are held together with two plastic strips. Therefore, the reflector screen has reduced efficiency. Ideally, this type of antenna is intended to receive primarily from one direction. However, with an inefficient reflector, this antenna receives in two directions (from the front and almost as well from back).

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not correct. Electrically all the current in the reflector flows in the horizontal direction. An electrical vertical connection would not help.
      Using the VHF-Hi element to form the reflector for the UHF would have been a better design rather than just one dipole for it. The UHF elements would work as directors. The VHF-Lo elements could then be the reflector for VHF-Hi.

    I don't see the point of an "attic antenna". If you can put an antenna in your attic, it means you own your residence, and can therefore put an antenna outside, where it will perform much better. According to the FCC OTARD Rule, no one, including a Home Owners Association, can prohibit you from installing an outdoor antenna. So just do it.
