The first time I played God of War (2005) I played the European version. I didn't know why they said that scene was so brutal until I realised it was, originally, a human being the one burned alive lol.
Fun fact: The soldier you sacrifice is voiced by Rob Paulsen, a veteran VA who has done countless voices including Yakko Warner, Crash Bandicoot and Carl Wheezer
I'll be honest, I prefer the European version of the sacrifice since it is too cruel for that living Athenian soldier to die like that, and we also got to see Kratos smile for the first time in the saga.
Not to mention, this scene would be more inhuman and terrifying when Kratos's smirk in the European version combined with the Athenian soldier in the original.
never imagined that the real version was the american one. incredibly cruel scene. also about the scene of the women slaughtered, it was cut out of my game (apparently being a copy badly ported) so i always thought that the women screaming were the same Kratos could have s*x with LOL
because americans like to pretend their history is heroic and filled with pride. the americans are a people of war. always have been and probably always will be.
I never even knew this existed now I learned that I have The European version, but I think we all prefer it better. Just to see That Smirk on Kratos’s face is worth playing the European version. 😂😂😂
Gotta say, as brutal as the US version of this scene is, I have to question what was the point of censoring it in the European release. Not that I wouldn't have felt bad for that live soldier getting burned alive because I ABSOLUTELY would have, but isn't it a bit pointless to censor just the one part while keeping darn near every other instance of "cruelty is the only option" in the game, or the whole franchise really, the exact same?
The other version solved the problem by literally dehumanizing the victim; > Oh they aren't people so don't worry about that.... smile, we are getting rid of monsters.

The American version Spartan isn't a Spartan, in true facts when there was a time for sacrifice to gods like in 300 when Sparta had to pay the Persian emperor for the mesenger the Spartan gener killed, so they sent two Spartan soidlers as a sacrifice and they both begged to be killed, being killed as a Sacrifice in the eyes of a Spartan is glory to the fatherland (when I said he wasn't a Spartan I ment he didn't act like one, he calls kratos barbarian Eaven though they fought barbarians, and try's to call for help which a Spartan wouldn't do and accept his fate as he dies in eyes of honnor)

Apparently i have the European version. Got the game from somoene back in 2018 and had the censored version. Same for PS2 too. I don't like the Original version. That's pretty brutal. I feel like Kratos should have took the one who would have wanted to die and not the one who didn't.
@Filippo Contigiani Well he looked like a slave. "The goods has to make a sacrifice" or something like that. Rather than saying something like. I'm sorry but i have to do this if i will have any chance of destroying Ares, and save Athens.
@Filippo Contigiani He didnt even looked bothered. Remember, he showed no remorse for that soldier stricken with PTSD he killed for not extending a bridge for him and even called him a coward. To him, this kind of thing is just another day at work.
Lol young Kratos was the pinnacle of ruthless, he didn't give a shit he'd tear right through you to get the job done. After he butchered his family NO ONE mattered to Kratos. Especially at this point he already ditched his daughter in Hades to fuck over Atlas and save the world he would inevitably ruin.
