    Description: Great figure drawing isn't made with magic, it's process and insight. After 20 years of teaching and studying this is my case for why and how you should study the human figure if you want to be a professional artist.

    Drawing is honestly a weird, weird skill when you think about it. It incorporates intuitive knowledge with practice based knowledge and the simplest of changes in methodology you make can change your entire process as well as the end result. I watched your figure drawing video from a couple of years and followed along but with my own image, and the results just shocked me. Mind you, I have Life Drawing experience from school. But it's just perplexing to me how making angle breaks sharp instead of purposefully smooth can make such a tremendous difference. I urge anyone to go and watch that video from Stephen. I believe it's a 3-part video. I never tried it in college when drawing Still Life or gestures, or even long studies with a model. Just very, very surprising in my experience. Try it for yourself. The results are compelling to say the least.

      Yep, using straight lines are definitely better. It such a simple thing yet it makes a huge difference because straight lines makes it clear for us to understand the information. Ethan Becker also talks about this, instead of making a curve, create 2 straight lines that have a "breaking point".

    *"The human form is more challenging"* I absolutely agree with Stephen that if you want to level up all of your drawing/painting skills then do figure drawings. It's the most complex thing you can do and teaches you everything from form, shading, proportions, and foreshortening. You might want to add in the ability to draw boxes from any perspective (Drawabox 250 box challenge & suggested by Kim Jung Gi) and when you combine that with figure drawing you can really level up fast.

    All your video's have this beauty of zooming in on technical specific things and organically zooming out, on deeper questions. Always the: why? Why do this, this way?
    Answers without becoming dogmatic.
    And in the above video it almost becomes an ode to being human. Down to its core: studying the human body.
    Damn. Now I want to just draw, draw.
    Thank you for your lessons. I will become a patreon soon.

    Stephen, do you have any tips for students who are (at least in my atelier) obligated to do figure drawing in large format? We always use papers of approx 120cm x 70cm, and we're told to do 40min shaded figure drawing sessions (standing). I find it really difficult to shade, since a good linework in such a scale can only be achieved with charcoal bars, but they add too much darkness and mess up the values. I would love to do it with graphite pencils, just as you're showing here, but I've come to realize they're too fine for the whole scale of our drawings.

    Hi Stephen lately I was thinking of becoming a patron, but I wanted to ask what is the best way to follow the lessons, draw along or watch the lesson and then draw on my own? Also I wanted to ask if the purchase of the casts is necessary or if is ok to work from photos, as I am not able to buy them.

    Hi, I am a newbie artist here. I don't know if I even qualify as an artist yet but I am working on it. I am still in a very early stage and I haven't got to anatomy yet. But I was just wondering that whenever I start to learn it, is it necessary that I go to live sessions? Because while I understand the benefits of drawing from life, I can't really go to one due to a bunch of reasons. I don't really live in a place where something like that exists and also I have some personal reasons like financial etc. So if I just learn from nude photos of models, can that be enough?
    Or will I never really gain the true understanding of anatomy and a figure till I attend a real life session?

    • @satan8350
      @satan8350 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my experience,Drawing nude is not enough unless you're nsfw artist but I suggest you to learn background,colour theory, perspective,colour themes,genre,how the art program works,how the art supplies works on the canvas or etc.but yeah,I have been drawin in 8 months and surprisingly drawing gestures actually helps me to improve more
      Also,I don't have the live session in my place so I just watch the TH-cam videos from *New Master Academy* and *Ges Drawing Party* to practice anatomy.
      Or just you go to anyplace where there's a lot of people and draw them in the cafe
      Pardon my English, it's not my first language

    • @Shilpa_Kujur
      @Shilpa_Kujur 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Secha Hi, sorry if I sounded a bit too negative. I do know about anatomy books and the lessons we can get online. But like I mentioned, my family is going through some financial problems and the most lessons online are in courses which cost money. But yeah there are some lessons out there for free just with slightly less information. I was just asking like, if I only work from anatomy books and photographs, can that be enough or you NEED to study a live model to properly understand the form of a human body.
      But now when you mention, there are many self-taught artists out there with absolutely amazing art. And I can also just go outside and draw people but I am a bit nervous around public so I probably won't do it that much. But anyway, thanks for the advice!

    • @salty_3k506
      @salty_3k506 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's necessary as long as you have other sources of professional information.
      Here are some free artists/resources I like:
      Kim Jung Gi
      Ethan Becker
      Sinix
      Sycra
      DrawABox (the course is free and is excellent for learning the basics)
      Proko and his courses (the free parts are still worth watching)
      Figure Drawing Database (on the website you can look at models and learn how to draw gesture)
      There are countless art tutorials on TH-cam, and on anatomy too, so as long as you keep learning, watching the videos, understanding what these artists are doing, you should be fine.

    I was watching an animated series called the blue period on Netflix, about a student artist in “school/academy “ and the struggle’s as an artist trying to make it to the “next level”, why they like the styles they chose, artist they like, self loathing at own work, why they want to study art ect…. and a scene popped up during this series, of artists having to draw live nudes for exams, and that it made them feel more uncomfortable / naked, than the model they had to study and draw. Is there any reality to this.? as for an animated series the whole thing seems rather authentic when watching it. But I can only draw! .I’m no artist I can’t paint I’ve never been in those situations, so I’ve no clue. Is it that hard and stressful trying to study art. and is it easy to lose the love / spark for it when have that much pressure on you to pass exams ect..

    • @freshestinclass763
      @freshestinclass763 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some it is because of judgement. For others it's just another opportunity to draw and improve. I think the source is ego. Which is why it becomes a highly stressful environment for those whom fall under that umbrella. They never look at it as an endeavor that the fun is in the fact you'll never perfect it. And those whom we look up to more times than not got their status after they were gone. But what's left is their constant attempts. Many with alot of things these days just don't want to do the work.
