    I did my Master’s degree thesis on Schubert’s 3/4 piano dances. There are great examples here of the highly expressive, early Romantic style with which Schubert was able to imbue a simple form like a short dance. There are many, many overlooked treasures in this part of his oeuvre!

    Trio of walz#8 sounds to me like a dreamy melancholy epic passage typical of Schubert's late life

      12:37 I don't know why but it made me think of a magical medieval castle or a Harry Potterish world.

      @@Archiekunst That's because the harmony is composed of simple chords ; there are few dissonances and lots of open fifths. Those are qualities typical of medieval-to-renaissance-era composition. If you like this style, you should check out Brahms's op 10 ballades, especially the first one. He uses the same devices intentionally, to a striking effect.

    Bruh I'm on "waltz" no. 2 and there still no waltz
    Edit: there's not a single waltz in here, is this video mistitled? Are you sure it's not just 20 dances?
    20:40 finally a waltz!

    • @SPscorevideos

      In which way these are not waltzes?

    • @Whatismusic123
      @Whatismusic123 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @SPscorevideos simply the fact that they hold no resemblance to the style of waltz. Some are close, but are just mazurkas, only the last 4 and no. 15 are actual waltzes, the rest are some form of dances ranging from minuet, to mazurka

      @@Whatismusic123 There is no "style of waltz" eternally fixed in time. This is Schubert, not Johann Strauss, the character of a dance varies through decades - think about speed evolution in chaconne and allemande, or the transition era between menuet and scherzo.

    • @Whatismusic123
      @Whatismusic123 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @SPscorevideos there absolutely is a fixed style of waltz, you're just not aware of it. Maybe you'd have better luck by recognizing that some pieces in this collection are just straight up mazurkas, not waltzes like the one at 13:58

    • @SPscorevideos
      @SPscorevideos  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Whatismusic123 And which characteristic makes them mazurkas and not waltzes? :)

    0:38 Why'd The Pianist play this a half a step down?

    • @SPscorevideos

      I never noticed that (no perfect pitch here). I just checked, I can't find any edition or manuscript with that Trio in F# instead of G... Mystery!

      @@SPscorevideos Also a similar case happens in the Trio of The 5th Waltz, which is supposed to B-Flat Major. However, it was all transposed by the Pianist to become A-Flat Major.

      @@farrelpermadi5471 I found a version of the 5th waltz where the trio was A-flat major, so that one makes sense to me. But I still can't find the first one with the F# trio. Maybe it does exist somewhere?

    Is there a score for the trio characteristique you transposed/composed. Very fine and in complete style. Thanks.
