What do you guys think about this scene!?
It might be my favorite Twelfth Doctor moment! (In hot contention with his war speech)
I completely agree. The Twelfth Doctor has a lot of standout moments but this certainly has to be up there as one of the best.
That speech is perfect imo. "Just kind" has always hit deep for me.
Capaldi was not my first Doctor, but he truly is MY Doctor.
same!
Doctor Who series 10 is the best! Capaldi, Gomez, Mackie, and Lukas are all bringing their A game to some lovely scripts. It feels like a fresh revival without losing the refinement and experience of the prior seasons. Moffat also gets to deliver his mission statement for Who, putting kindness and science fiction fairytale in the forefront. What a great series!
Dude you're underrated asf
I tried watching Capaldi back when he first became the Doctor and found I didn’t care for him. I recently went back and gave him another watch and boy am I glad I did. He has become my favorite Doctor. He is such a brilliant actor. There are so many highlights throughout his run. And I think him and Clara may have become my favorite Doctor and companion or at least tied with 10 and Donna.
Great video and well thought out dialogue.
Subbed.
12 quickly became my favorite Doctor. I watched old who reruns on PBS with my grandfather as a little kid. So I was extremely excited when the new series was announced. Liked the new series alot, but The Doctor didn't feel like the Doctor in the clasic sense. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them. 9s sass and intensity, 10s love of the cosmos, and 11s almost childlike wonder hiding a very angry person. Then 12 comes along and is grumpy and gruff but he is overall kind. He felt like a mix of old and new who and I loved him for it. Still do.
Capaldi did what he could with the scripts he was given. This scene is amazing. We see the heart of who the Doctor is and why his chosen title is Doctor. Couple that with the Master/Missy, who portrayed the parts so believably well. I loved hating them being themselves, selfish in their own distinct ways. The Master, winning by refusing to help the friend who was always better than he. Missy, doing away with her base self in hopes of being greater than her old self and finding a way to be kind. The irony of them both showing their nature and destroying themselves. It broke my heart when they died.
A great piece of acting by Michelle Gomez.
Yes, Missy is listening. I also think she is ashamed. Up to now, she has been enjoying her own company way too much. The chaos, the cruelty, the selfishness. All the good work done by the Doctor, the changes she made - undone in a second, in that mad, sociopathic glee she feels in being herself with herself... but now her best friend, the one she was trying so hard to get to trust her again, is pleading with her to be with him in his darkest hour and her old self (arguably her true self) - that is John Simm's Master - is mocking and dismissing him and she is ashamed of who she was and who she so easily reverts back to.
The mad carnival of murder and mayhem is truly over and she feels her only option left is to crawl away and undo herself I wonder...
When she grasps the Doctor's hand, does he feel the dagger she is hiding? Is that why his eyes open with shock?
I always loved this speech
I may be seeing something that isn't there, but I honestly think that The Master was listening too. That blank stare? I can see a tiny bit of contemplation behind it. I loved that they got John Simm back, as he was my favourite incarnation of The Master, and both he and Michelle Gomez were great in this story.
Awesome video on an awesome scene! 100% share your love of Capaldi's Doctor!
Never really thought of Series 10 as underrated, though (no more than the rest of Capaldi's era, at least). I remember seeing a lot of people at the time saying it was better than S8 and S9 and feeling as though I was in the minority because I disagreed. Still love this finale regardless! One of the all-time best!
Always enjoy your videos, too (I look forward to the day you eventually cover Heaven Sent)👍
I live by his words in this scene. And may I say I (foolishly) never thought anyone could reveal to me anything I didn't already appreciate about this most-beloved scene, and YOU DID. This is important work. Thank you for your brilliant analysis. ❤️❤️
Damn it, now my eyes are watery.
This one scene has become my own way of valuing and measuring redemption.
Who I am is where I stand. Where I stand is.... where I fall.
This is such a powerful speech because it's so simple and honest. It's desperate. It's so much more than something like the Zygon speech. Which, sadly, is the only other one that sticks in my mind. I'm going to go find his other speeches now though.
Another great video! I can watch you do deep dives on every episode of Capaldi's run and when i got to the end, i'd just restart the playlist.

A beautiful analysis, and certainly one of the best stories of all time. Fantastically analysed.

The thing is, what about the idea of "live to fight another day"? By choosing to die here, how many are you condemning to death in your absence?
8:45 Funny thing is they could probably have won with the master's help, the master or Missy, one person who can go to the tradis while the doctor stands and figure something out. The master for all his flaws is nearly as brilliant as the doctor. And they are timelords, once they have the tardis free of the black hole the time advantage of the Cybermen is inversed, instead of having the cybermen have centuries for every day a timelord with a tardis has infinitite time if they want to.
Of course the plot makes no sense to begin with, the part of the ship that is furtherest away from the bridge don't actually expeirence time at a super speed, they experience it at normal speed while the ones closer to the blakc hole experience it super slow. The ship is actually there for centuries from the perspective of the greater universe so how don't they set up a emergency beacon down that end? They've got centuries to be rescued or figure out a way to salvage some escpae crafts from the ship itself.
3:30 "Likewise" I don't think she means "I don't see what I see in the doctor" I think she means "I don't see what the doctor sees in Sim's Master"
Never ever eat pears!
Are you planning to do a breakdown like this for Face The Raven at all? Not quite as emotionally impactful in the same way as this scene was for me but seeing Capaldi get to tap into some of the anger The Doctor has was something I wish we could have gotten to see a bit more of
Yes at some point I'm sure I'll get round to that scene!
To be honest eventually I'll probably have a breakdown for every single Frame of Capaldi's run lol
@@RamblingManYT I'll be eagerly looking forward to them! He has a lot of great moments throughout his run so you've definitely got a few videos to fall back on if you start running low on ideas
