    Pilot is one of my favorite brands since I’ve found pretty much anything with that name on it writes beautifully - whether top of their line or this great little work horse. I bought a set of these years ago and the ones I still have (they’re a really great stocking stuffer!) are going strong. Noodlers always gets a big thumbs up too! Nice video series - thanks, Chris.

      Hi Sue! This is so true - they make quality pens! I love how comfortable these Petit 1s are in the hand even more longer writing sessions!

    I have my Petit1 loaded with heart of darkness too! I like having a basic black pocket pen that I can even fit in the farce that passes for pockets in Women’s pants. 😄

      Hi Nicki! I know just what you mean! I'm loving winter because I always have some sort of zip hoodie on and I can put my pocket pen in a pocket. Jeans these days the pockets are like a really bad joke! Like getting short sheeted. I sometimes spend lots of time in thrift stores looking for an older pair of jeans with deeper pockets ... I always need to carry my small wallet in my jeans when I travel and even the expensive jeans are so poorly made nowdays ... ahhh.... don't get me going!!!!! :)

    Great video! I'm loving this series. A great addition/alternative would be some combos you found that you would NOT recommend. It might save some folks some headaches. I just received my first Pilot pen (details coming to you) and surprisingly, I don't own any Noodler's inks. But my ink collection barely qualifies for the word. ;-) Sometimes I really enjoy a good, sharp black on crisp white paper.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Donna! That's an interesting idea: what doesn't work! It seems I could fill a book with those combos that didn't work. I always fear I'll start to generalize ... so this series is helping me focus in on specifics which I think is good! And I could do that either way - works or doesn't work - for me anyway! When I first got into the hobby I was confused by statements from some videos and blogs that were for or against an entire ink or pen brand ... especially when I'd had a good or bad experience with a specific ink or that didn't support the general statement. :) OOOh a new pen ... I can't wait to hear about it!

    I received a generous sample in a traveling ink box thing I participated in a couple years ago on a reddit thread, that was fun, but I don't remember if I've used it yet. I don't use black ink that often, but I should ink up a pen! I haven't tried the Petit 1 pen, but they're so cute. I should add one to my Jetpens cart for the next time I place an order, lol. thanks for sharing. I love this series! :)

    I haven’t tried either this pen or this ink, but I have a sample of HOD and I have used a Pilot Varsity. Time to check out the Petit 1 instead of picking up another varsity. I like the cartridge instead of a full barrel of ink. I love refilling cartridges, and it’s become my go-to filling system with cartridge converter pens. Thanks for the awesome video. This seems like a perfect combo! 🧡

      Hi Casey - oh yes I think you'd love the Pilot Petit 1! The cartridge is small but if you're like me, I don't mind filling them -- I find it fun! I keep a small bottle of Heart of Darkness by the sink in my pen cleaning "tub" so that I can refill my Petit 1 anytime quickly. :)

      Hi Sharon - plenty of silicone grease is the key I think - I know Chrisrap52 eyedroppers his Petit 1s. The one time I tried mine I had a leak ... granted I was a newbie then. So, be careful til you know it's sealed really well. :) My Kaweco Sport eyedroppers much easier because the threads are smaller on that pen!

    I do like this pen, but I use mine with the Pilot Petit apple green cartridges as I do like that green. I've been meaning to purchase a couple more of these pens, but that will now have to wait until next year due to this year being a no spend year. I've some samples of Heart of Darkness, but I don't think I've tried it out yet........if I have tried it, I don't remember doing so 😂😂😂😂

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Annie -- the apple green sounds pretty!!! The Heart of Darkness ink to me seems so nice and crisp. And I prefer it to the DeAtramentis Document ink even though the document ink is more permanent/waterproof.

  • @johngrubb007
    @johngrubb007 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I believe that with HOD and most other Noodlers waterproof inks you need to be sure it is only one layer. Noodler's inks need to bond to the paper cellulose and if you have more than a single layer, the second layer can no longer bond so it will run off a bit. Also, you should give the ink at least a day to complete the bonding. It's not really designed for artwork as such where it needs to hold fast quickly. This bonding is what is important to make it bulletproof, archival, water-resistant/proof, and forgery resistant.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John - I still have so much to learn about using fountain pens in art. This is good info about the bonding time needed and the one layer issue. I've turned to ballpoint for my art journal (for now) and may revisit testing some other black inks later on. But I still enjoy Heart of Darkness for writing!

    • @johngrubb007
      @johngrubb007 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisSaenz13 I don't have Heart of Darkness (yet) but I do have Borealis Black and Black Raven, a Canadian Exclusive. I love the Noodler's inks due to their pigment saturation and Nathan's philosophy of giving the customer the maximum for his money. It does make sense to use a ballpoint for art journalling since the Noodler's inks are not designed for that kind of use. You might want to try the Diamine document ink and the DeAtramentis archival inks for artwork. I've heard that they are very water-resistant and fast drying.
      I love the Noodler's pens too but if you are not interested in tinkering and experimenting, they may not be a great choice. I have 9 of them and they are great fun to try different things with and the fact that they all use ebonite feeds makes them well worth the effort of any tweaking needed. Even my 2 (free) Charlie's are great little pens after heat setting the nibs. I just have to remember to keep them loaded up fully and to warm them a bit before writing so the expansion of air from warming up in hand doesn't cause burping. I have more than one big splotch of black ink on my writings to remind me of this :)

      @@ChrisSaenz13 I forgot to mention that if you get ink in the cap and you can't get to it in short order, filling the cap with pen flush (I use Goulet Pens flush) and a vigorous shaking after an overnight soak should do the trick on all but the Baystate inks. They require a 30/70 bleach mix to get rid of any staining.

  • @gadgetstop321

    Hi Chris! I love the Petit 1 and Rhodia paper but I haven't had the opportunity to try a Noodler's ink yet. My Petit 1 is also a work pen, but for me that means it's the one that has wild ink in it. When I got mine, I was shocked at how well it wrote and how good the build quality and design are. And like you, I refill cartridges. I'm too scared to eyedropper a pen.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi gadgetstop321 - I have had 2 pens that eyedropper really well: the Moonman Mini (Wancai) and the Kaweco Sport plastic one! The threads need to be nice and small I think in order for me to feel confident about the eyedropper situation since I love to carry pens in my pockets! :)

    i like Noodler's inks for their permanence. One thing I really like about Heart of Darkness is the dry time. It is so fast drying--great for bullet journaling. The draw back is that I find it feathers a lot. More than that though, I don't like how much it moves with water. I think the fact that it is so dark leaves a lot of pigment-on-pigment that just moves around a lot. Noodler's Black doesn't dry as quickly or go down as black but when it gets wet at least nothing happens. This is great bc if drops of water hit H.O.D. it makes it illegible if I fail to wipe it up but with Noodler's black there's maybe a little shadow but its still plenty readable

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Thomas - I need to try Noodler's Black - because I know exactly what you mean about Heart of Darkness moving too much when water drops on it!!! I have a few other samples of black inks that may be more permanent for art that I will be testing out soon too. Heart of Darkness has been a great ink for note taking - it was my first black ink and may take me a lifetime to finish the bottle lol.

    Thank you Chris for the video.For quick notes I tend to use a VPen / Varsity (in USA) and my travellers notepad or a piece 160 gsm copy paper cut down & the parts stapled together , i don't do food journaling the notes that i take are generally on videos I've watched so i can comment intelligently about the subject . :-)
    I do have a few petit 1 pens and they are nice little pens but i don't find myself using them that often.
    I am not someone who eyedroppers pens unless the pen can only be eyedroppered by design and i do have a number of cartridges for the pens i have but would refill them like you have once they were gone.
    The wick can be removed but it's a bit of a faff and i have found that flushing can clear the wick if you use a bulb syringe with some pressure but the wick is not the easiest to clean, ultrasonic cleaning can help, but if your just using black and refilling with black I'd just give it a quick quizz like you said.
    I wonder if there is a way to clean inside the inner cap if you get ink in there possibly again ultrasonic might work .

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matthew - oh I hadn't thought about an ultrasonic cleaner for those cap/liners that get stained. It's one of the biggest irritants but if I keep up with cleaning the cap it's minimized.
      I'm going to do some research and see if anyone has gotten the cap liner stain issue solved! I still have one cap I saved to try and fix since the staining isn't too bad but one I threw away!

    Aloha Chris! Enjoying this series, especially this one since I am about ready to flush out a Pilot Petit 1 in Apricot Orange (way too light in color to be a useable color!) and put in my go to black ink: Noodler's Heart of Darkness (although I have a bottle of Pilot Take Sumi coming!) My other Pilot Petit 1 is the blue-black, which I find to be a very good blue-black ink and was hoping to find something comparable in bottle form. Any ideas since you have a vast knowledge of inks and the few I have tried are all much lighter and/or too blue in color. Thanks for the reminder about the cloth "wick" type feed for the Pilot Petit 1 and I think I will just let the Noodler's HOD "replace" the Apricot Orange in the feed instead of flushing it out as I normally do with all my fountain pens. Mahalo from Hawaii, Thomas

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Thomas - yes that sounds like a good idea since the Apricot Orange is so much lighter the Noodler's Heart of Darkness will overtake it quickly anyway. I just hate having to wait 3 days for the wick to dry. Maybe there's some other way to deal with it but I'm not sure how. I tend to just keep the same color family running thru separate Petit 1s. :) Hmmm I'm not sure on the blue black ... but one that does come to mind is Kaweco Midnight Blue - I like that one a lot. It's hard to get the right balance of black/blue to suit me as well so I hesitate ....another one I personally like is J. Herbin Bleu des Profondeurs. :)

      Aloha Chris! As always, thanks for the personal reply. I just made the switch and now I have a pen that I can actually use! It will replace my other Pilot Petit1 with OEM blue-black cartridge that I keep in my pocket as an EDC, so now I can use that for my "around the house" writing! Thanks for the warning about the ink transferring from the section to the seal in the cap as I noticed some ink in my EDC blue-black pen! Thanks also for the recommendations. I will surely consider one or both the next time I order. Thanks once again and have a wonderful evening. Mahalo, Thomas

    Hi Chris, this is a great series🤗Have you ever used HOD in
    a Lamy Safari with a fine nib?
    I am looking to buy a black ink
    for a friend. I have read that some Noodler's inks have a very unpleasant odour, like
    Rachmaninoff 😕. How do you find HOD in that regard?

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tanja -- I don't notice any odor in my Noodler's Heart of Darkness. I have tried it in my Lamy Safari F nib and I would just say that the Lamy F writes a little wetter than the Pilot Petit 1 F so I prefer the Petit 1 for the HOD ink. That way I can hop onto cheaper paper like grocery lists and my food journal without any trouble. :)
