The grain and colour is really firery. That wood looks very dense. It looked hard work to turn that down compared to your other work. Great finished item. Hadn't thought about using something like a test tube to finish it.
I reclaimed a bunch of that type of wood from work 14-15 years ago. It was used for the structure in crates from S Korea. I always thought it might be mahogany. It has a very aromatic, almost like cinnamon, smell.
nice vase, in this video what chuck are you using? I have one that came with a used Delta 46-460 lathe, but there are no markings on it, and I would like to see if I can get larger jaws for it.
@@CarlJacobson Thank you, I am just beginning and the chuck jaws seem to be smaller than most of the ones I see so was hoping to get bigger jaws or replace the chuck. I do enjoy your work. Thanks again
Thanks John. I had a great 4th with the kids. Yes, TH-cam has some strange gliches sometimes. I have clicked on channels that tell me they have been removed when they are not. I am not sure what is going on, but I have had the same thing happen with people I have subscribed to.
Hi Carl, I love your videos and I'm getting back into turning after a 4 year layoff and I've learned a lot from watching you. My question is: After sanding with the wax/oil mixture, have you ever buffed the piece on a buffing system? If so, how did it turn out? Thanks in advance, David
where did you get the glass tube? What do you think about using Helmsman marine finish from minwax for vessels holding water? Beautiful piece. Thank you for all your teachings. They are valuable.
Thank you Debbie! I've never use a marine finish, but if it's waterproof it should work. I got the tube from one of the turning supply companies I can't remember which one.
Hey Carl, Nice vase. I need to make some of these. It's one item that I haven't turned yet, except for one I turned out of a banksia pod a while back. The wood still reminds me of sapele, especially in the still picture at the end...but what do I know? ;-) Larry
Good evening, I wanted to ask you that what kind of wood is best suited for turning. I only know that the oak is really not suitable ... thank you best regards Jančo
Happy New Year and good health and happiness. Excuse me, but I should have one more question, could be the final surface treatment of wood to use coconut oil? Thank you once again and wish you the best.... Anton....
Looks like you had a good forth as well, made it through the day with all my fingers in place. :) thanks for another great video (fireworks as well) for some reason it is giving me the option of subscribing to your channel which I did long ago, strange.
Awesome thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you William!
Thank you Carl, first I have to finish lathe and then be careful as you type. Thank you again and I learn from your videos .....
Anton Jančo Thank you Anton
Good project ., Carl Jacobson
Thank you!
This is a nice project for those small pieces left over from larger projects. Thanks for sharing.
Harold McLellan Thank you Harold
Great idea Dennis,

Thanks Larry,
Would love to see the banksia pod vase. I have not turned one of those.
Carl

Cool!! You can find wood just about anywhere :)
Thanks and glade it helped.
Thanks John.
Lovely profile on that vase. I'm going to have to steal that.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
I like that Chisel, what a beast. Pretty nice vase too.
Thanks for the tip on the mineral oil and paste wax... I had asked you on another video. Awesome, have get the mineral oil and I'm gonna try this.
Thanks Brendan.

Thank you Tom! This one is a Nova chuck
@@CarlJacobson Thank you, I am just beginning and the chuck jaws seem to be smaller than most of the ones I see so was hoping to get bigger jaws or replace the chuck. I do enjoy your work. Thanks again
Thank you Tom! I think you can still get jaws for it.
Very nice! You made that look so easy to do!!

Anton Jančo Thank you Anton

Very nice job. I really enjoy your work. Where do you get the glass inserts?
Thank you Mike!! I think you can pick these up at any hobby store now.
Hi Carl, I love your videos and I'm getting back into turning after a 4 year layoff and I've learned a lot from watching you. My question is: After sanding with the wax/oil mixture, have you ever buffed the piece on a buffing system? If so, how did it turn out?

+David Judd Thank you very much David. Yes I've used the buffing wheel on a few pieces it turns out great and a nice shine

Do you have problems with cracking since you did not hollow out the base of the piece.
+123HURST No, this a dry piece of wood and it didn't crack.
Thank you Carl worth a try....Best regards Anton...
Anton Jančo Thank you Anton
do you use a special sand paper with the mineral oil/ wax finish
Hi Peter, I use cloth backed or mesh sandpaper.
@@CarlJacobson Again thank you for your response
Thank you.
You are welcome. Cannot wait to see the video.
Next time you want to take off a lot of wood try using that big old scraper you have. Works fast and easy.
Dennis

Hola Carl, que mezcla haces, cera y aceite y que lija de mano usas, sino es indiscreción, buen trabajo, un saludo
Thank you Julian
Thanks Carl.
Hi John, I got this one at Woodcraft
can you glue pallets together?
Yes you can Jeffrey :)
@@CarlJacobson Think you . I might try it
Where do you get the glass tubes. Thx.
I found these on Ebay, but I'm sure you can find them on Amazon now.
Hi Carl. Can you tell me what the degree is on the bevel?
Good evening, I wanted to ask you that what kind of wood is best suited for turning. I only know that the oak is really not suitable ... thank you best regards Jančo
Anton Jančo Most hard woods turn very well, like Maple, Walnut, and Cherry.
Take care,
Carl
Happy New Year and good health and happiness. Excuse me, but I should have one more question, could be the final surface treatment of wood to use coconut oil? Thank you once again and wish you the best.... Anton....
Anton Jančo Happy New Year Anton, I'm not sure about Coconut oil, I've never used it. Walnut oil is a good substitute.

Great video Carl, again another awesome project. What size was the blank again when you started the project?
Thank you Paul! I think it was about 4" by 6"
Great project! I'd like to make something similar. Where did you get the glass tube? Is that something I could buy online?
I bought from Amazon
Thanks Ron.
Let me know if you have any other questions about the process.
Carl
Carl,
Where do you get those toolrests you use?
Where do you buy glass tubes
I think most craft stores have them.
@@CarlJacobson Thanks - i have found taller ones but would like the size you had for smaller project - you do great videos
how did you finish the base on the vase
I use a sanding pad that goes in my jacobs chuck. You can use it on the lathe or a drill press.
@@CarlJacobson Thank you
which is the product that you add which it can buy in pharmacies? minute 6:56
It's mineral oil
Carl Jacobson Thanks Carl!
nice
Hey Carl, what kind of wood is that?
Burnt Taco It's some pallet wood I got, I don't know the species.
Thanks!
@mrdifficult I got them at a hobby store.
Yes you get a email notification.
Take care,
Carl
Who is it that you get reclaimed wood from?
I got this piece from a shop here in Portland.
Anyone have more info on "that company that recycles pallets..."?
Yes, I throw it away after each use.
А что это за дерево?)
It's 40 degrees
MrLeonard55, I agree.
