To perform the secondary coil check, set your meter to 2k as you did, but put the probes in the 1 and 4 spark plug leads (they go to same coil). Then to check other, put probes into 2 and 3 spark plug leads and note readings... This applies to 80's Yamaha..not sure of others.

I think you set it to 20K because the ohms should be around 11K.

Secondary on the dual coils is tested by putting the probes thru the hingh tension wires with or without the spark caps

You can take off the cap to test them

Primary is 2.4-3.2 ohms secondary is done plug to plug, 30-40 Kilo ohms hope it helps

I need some help with the yamaha xj750, do any of you know which color is in which pin conected in the CDI?

Yea, I had a set of coils on my CB550 that would show a reading but only some times, the bike ran ok however I replaced them anyway just to be safe. The new coils give me a good reading every time so it was more just piece of mind. Also I won't rule out it could have been my cheap meter giving me a false reading.

How do you test the coil packs on a 2006 gsxr 750

Can your bike still run with a weak coil? Is that a thing?!?

Don't forget they have a shelf life so two can go around about the same time. Happened to me with 30yr old coils.

Hi- shouldnt your secondary readings should be from your plug lead to earth- ??

When you were testing the secondary coils on the bike, if I'm not mistaken you had your setting wrong on your multimeter. Hence why you were not getting a reading and it was out of the range of the multimeter and you adjusted it for the Harley coil and it worked. Also, I would have tested from the plug and subtract the resistance of the plug off the total resistance, I know on my virago it's around 5K ohms for the plug i.e. if I get a reading of 17500 ohms = 12500 - 5000. Primary is 2.4-3.2 ohms secondary is done plug to plug, 30-40 Kilo ohms. However, I would recommend checking online to see your recommended resistance for your coils.

test a coil with an ohmmeter is awaste of time acoil is nothing but a long coppper wire wound in circle the primaryy is small er than the secondaryin turns ratioto test a coil un plug from spark plug insert screw driver into plug wire hold 1/4 inch from eng spin eng look for spark if spark is good thats all it can do you may def spark plug easy to swap out if you have weak or no spark lookat points for correct gap and pitting if pitting change condenser thats what causes pitting of the points

Surely the secondary winding resistance is between the end of the HT spark plug lead and engine ground? It is very unusual for two coils to fail at once.

With low ohms readings how about checking the resistance of your leads first then subtracting that from your reading just a thought

don't you need to disconnect lead from plug as well ??

Temperature can affect the reading as well

  • @josephhollifield660

dude, for the secondary test connect your leads between the plug wire and ground, any shiny spot on the frame. If you were to get anything besides infinity on that meter, with the leads connected the way you did, it would mean the coil was shorted.

Yeah had the same problem on my cb400. Got nothing on the secondary test. Ordered a new coil and it showed nothing as well. Thought that was my no spark problem, but I was wrong

I think your method is wrong on the secondary...you put the leads on both outputs (going to the plugs).
