Tandy Skills: Saddle Stitching

  • The saddle stitching technique-also known as hand stitching or two-needle stitching-is time-consuming but ends up stronger than a machine stitch. If a thread is cut on one side of a saddle stitch, but the other side remains intact, the overall stitch will continue to retain its integrity. Whereas in a machine stitch, if one side of a stitch is broken the entire length of the stitch will be compromised and eventually separate. While saddle stitching is more time-consuming many find it to be enjoyable-and even quite calming-once mastered.
For this skill we will be referencing the steps in the book, "Lacing & Stitching," plus using the following tools:
    • (2) Needles
    • Lightly Waxed Poly Thread
    • TandyPro® Stitching Groover
    • TandyPro® Pricking Iron
    • TandyPro® Awl
    • Stitching Pony
Practice makes perfect! Similar to many other leathercraft skills, this may take time to master and might not be perfect on the first try. Keep practicing and the saddle stitch process will quickly become second nature!

Best saddle stiching video... i learned how to saddle stich from other videos but didn't really understand why. This video explained the process clearly with different colored threads. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I like that different colors are used in sewing, it's easier to understand! 👍

Love the video I appreciate the fact that you used a red and blue thread so that it was very easy to follow your technique very informative

The way that the blue thread was made to go under the red thread (by looping the red thread over the blue thread) is absolutely the correct way to proceed, and actually DOES create a half-granny knot which is hidden unseen inside hole, and makes the stitching much more snug and loosen-resistant as you proceed. (It is the half-knot that actually makes the thread leave the holes at the desired angles.) Notice that the back side of the stitching is rather straight and not particularly in a Z pattern, even though the sewing symmetric on both sides. (If a proper Z pattern is desired on both sides, then naturally the Z-pattern pricking iron or chisel should be used on both sides.)

Хм пожалуй надо попробовать .Я шью без "узелка " внутри и шов получается равномерным прямым . Интересно попробовать сочетание разных цветов нитей -как-то не приходило в голову попробовать так шить.

Im confused as to why we dont punch the stitching holes all the way through at the beginning?

Because these are pricking iron as opposed to stitching chisels. The tines on the pricking iron are much finer, so the leave a smaller cut in the leather that is meant to be used as a guide for the diamond awl. The awl will then easily cut through the leather and finish the hole with out stretching out the leather as much. if you used the pricking irons to make the full hole, you would run the risk of snapping the tines off over time because the are so thin.

If you play it double speed it's watchable, otherwise it's a great sedative...either way
