Animated remakes of their older animated movies. It sounds weird but it might be fun to see a different take on Disney's oldest movies like jungle book or rescuers with a completely new story telling team and current era animation. Especially since most of their oldest movies are based on fairy tales that can be and are told differently. That or animated remakes of their original live action films like the black hole, pirates of the caribbean Mary Poppins and 20000 leagues under the sea.
About Disney Animation's stance on sequels, I have good reason to believe that they are not going to dominate their current slate. The current creative head, Jennifer Lee, has made it perfectly clear that the current goal is to explore the true potentials of animation, including storytelling, which means way more original films and less sequels. The fact that Raya and the Last Dragon is the only original we know isn't enough to dispel this. By that logic, there would be reason to believe that Pixar is going to make a bunch of sequels after Soul because we don't know what comes after that either. Basically, I wouldn't worry too much about sequelitis because the way I see things, as of now, there's far more proof of Disney's animation divisions putting most of their focus on original films. That could change of course, but the way things seem, there's no need to assume the worst.
Great video! Loved it. Your videos are such high-quality and you've gotten even better with the editing/film-making. Totally agree with you on the sequels. A lot of times I just don't even bother watching them because I don't feel the need. Sometimes that leads me to be pleasantly surprised, other times I feel like I didn't need to bother. I hate that so many movies leave the ending open to a sequel now though because they know they just want to milk it. Stay safe Joe
When I first saw the video in my subscriptions I though it was an April fools joke. But this is another great video as always. This video does get me thinking about sequels because I find my opinion can sway on them. One example is converting books to film which I think is fine for sequels like lord of the rings and harry potter (and hobbit if it was two films and not three). The problem is I get nervous when Disney or Pixar make sequels because I don't want them to become like blue sky and have 5 sequels to ice age and there all worse quality then the original which I really like. I think sequels should be made if there is a logical way to continue the story like what happens in monsters inc once they change to laugh power or what new adventures can Jim go on in treasure planet(treasure planet is also one of my favourite Disney films). I guess we will just wait and see what happens. Hope you are doing well Joe and hope you have a good week and feel better.
I'm always concerned about posting on 4/1 for that very reason....And yeah, like I said in the video, I'm not opposed to the concept of sequels per say...more just the poorly contrived sequels
I love some of Disneys sequels like Frozen II, Aladdin: The Return of Jafar, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride. Some I completely HATE like Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, Cinderella II: Dreams Come True. My favorite Disney prequel is none other than Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas.I also LOVE Cinderella III: A Twist in Time. I love and hate other Disney films but I’m not going to get into them because there are just too many.
A wonderful and also slightly educational video Joe. Wonderful Job and I hope you do feel better and continue to be so in this crazy and scary time. Keep up the great work as always :)
I agree with you man. Sure, the business side of things makes a case for revisiting established properties. But I remember that string of direct to video sequels and so many didn't justify themselves in my eyes. Give a sequel a reason to exist, a good reason, and I'm there. In the meantime don't be afraid to take a chance on something new.
I litterally discovered you like 3 days ago, and now I'm binging your videos. Lol. I really enjoyed this! Life gets in the way, but we always come back to Disney :)
It may be a bit controversial, but for some of the animated films that did get sequels, some of them do make sense since some of the source materials the films were based off had sequels/prequels. Like Peter Pan had The Little Bird, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and heck J.M. Barrie himself was thinking about doing a sequel called "The Man Who Couldn't Grow Up or The Old Age of Peter Pan"(That would later become Steven Speilburg's Hook) and a bit of the plot of Return to Neverland was based off the ending in the original play/Novel) and The Jungle Book had The Second Jungle Book. Even though the village part of the plot and Shere Khan wanting revenge was loosely based off of Tiger-Tiger in the first Jungle Book(Which was supposed to be in the 1967 film when Bill Peet did the storyboards but was dropped when Peet quitted the studio) Plus the only elements that were carried over were the village characters from the book, like Messua(Mowgli's adoptive mother) and her unnamed husband. Shanti the village girl(Who was unnamed in the first film) the feral boy falls for and his adoptive brother Ranjan were loosely based on two minor characters that appear in The Spring Running from The Second Jungle Book). Hell, even Bambi even had Bambi's Children by Felix Salten, which ironically Disney was thinking of maybe doing it, but instead turned into a comic book adaptation instead. Tarzan also has a huge series of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, though most of them were used for the TV series.Along with 101 Dalmatians had a sequel book called The Starlight Barking, yet they never think to adapt that for the animated or live-action film. And at least some of the Disney Toon Winnie the Pooh films reused some stories from A.A. Milne's books that weren't used in the original shorts.
Cinderella ||| is the best sequel. I got to talk with Paige O’Hara from Beauty and the Beast, and according to her The Enchanted Christmas is cannon. She really enjoyed making it. Not sure about Belle’s Magical World. I own the two Mermaid sequels, the two Beauty sequels, some of the Pooh films, Rescuers Down Under, Pocahontas 2, The Lion King 2 & 1 1/2, Bambi 2, and Hunchback 2.
I'm a defender of Disney's direct to video sequels and honestly Dumbo 2 is one of the ones I would've liked to see mainly because the original film is so short and bonus fact our next Disney movie is Moana 2
I think the only argument to be made for logical direct to video sequels are the The Lion King trilogy (Lion King is inspired by Hamlet, Lion King II is based off Romeo and Juliet, and Lion King 1 1/2 is based off Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead) and Return to Neverland ( Jane is mentioned at the end of the book and play of Peter Pan.
While I haven’t seen Frozen 2, imo Wreck it Ralph breaks the internet was a big disappointing sequel. Ralph and Penelope seemed to be out of character and the moral of the story from the first movie was ignored. Also, a lot of the jokes about the internet where either boring or obvious.
Sequels, especially for children’s movies, have a huge problem with their ensemble cast from the previous film. You don’t necessarily need all the characters from the previous film but they’re so ingrained in the original story you need to have them present somehow. But most of the time half the cast just stands around with nothing to do, and you really can’t kill off any major characters from the previous film because it will likely affect toy sales. So the story usually grinds to a halt anytime the redundant character has screen time. It’s the reason why Walt wanted nothing to do with them. But that’s an artist problem. As far as business is concerned making a sequel to a well established movie is easy money.
Yeah, even as a kid, I could recognize if the voice of a beloved character was different, and it just makes it feel like a knock off before you even get started
To be honest, while I do agree with most of what you said in this video, I personally wasn't a huge fan of Ralph Breaks the Internet or Frozen II. Both of them still felt unnecessary to me and had massive writing issues that kept me from loving either of them. Ralph Breaks the Internet seems like a movie that will be super dated in a year due to its reliance on internet memes and pop culture references. Eh, to each is their own. Still agree that they are loads better than the straight to home video sequels.
I totally agree. Though I liked films like Frozen 2, Finding Dory, Toy Story 4, and particularly The Incredibles 2, I still did not find them as enjoyable as the originals, or other original films like Coco, Inside Out and Zootopia.
That was very good. I won't lie, I enjoy some sequels. In fact, the only ones of the DTV category I enjoy are "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride" (which Is even one of my favorite films) and "Aladdin and the King of Thieves". I also enjoy "Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin", but I don't know if that counts. There've also been some rare occasions where I enjoy a sequel more than the original with the both aformentoned here "Ralph Breaks the Internet" and "Frozen 2", and even "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates" I enjoy more than the original too. But for the most part, if anyone were to ask me about sequels, I'd tell them that nothing beats the original. In fact, it's what Walt Disney himself said when making all the Three Little Pigs shorts, you can't top pigs with pigs.
I believe that half of the Disney Sequals were terrible and the other half were watchable and some were even good and are worthy successors to the original film's like for example Good: Lion King 2 and Bambi 2, Worst Hunchback 2 and Pocahontas 2!
To be honest I don't have that much hate for the Disney direct-to-video sequels as most do as I do enjoy watching them even with the low quality animation but there was some that has better animation and were almost on par with their original films like The Lion King 2 and 3 and also Bambi 2 with also Lilo and Stitch 2 that franchise in himself was a success Aladdin did okay but the third was the better one for ever turned Robin Williams
🤔 Cool video Joe. Im fine with sequels, but for me sequels should be movies that really deserve a sequel like Pixar Inside Out. Loved your new video style man 👍🏻. 11:28 One of my favorite movies of all time. Really looking for your thoughts on Beauty and the Beast. Take care and stay safe Joe 👍🏻.
I'll freely admit, the Disneytoon studios may not necessarily have been necessary. But even so, I'll freely say that some of them at least were still able to be somewhat decent films in their own right.
In all honesty for Disney to not become just another company they need to stop remaking their classics and making unnecessary sequels because I too like Wreck-It Ralph but it's equal just wasn't the same as it was more about the internet and it didn't have the same feel that the original had and I was never a big fan of Frozen but it did need a sequel and now I'm worried there might be a third Frozen continue fact that as long as they care more about money than stories it will keep remaking the classics to Solas unlovable movies in Compton sequel Sunset of direct-to-video it'll be on the big screen
You forgot about Fantasia 2000 and Winnie The Pooh. And Frozen is actually the worst and most overrated Disney animated movie ever made. It was so bad that it really didn't deserve to have a sequel nor did it even deserve to have a franchise including two theatrical shorts. But it had to get one all because it made Disney billions.
Sequels & live-action, the well dry dry dry - all for $$. But do you like Lion King 1-1/2? I think it a uniquely smart mid-quel! ...e.g. has the only fart joke-routine I find funny besides Lion King 1's "hot tub" scene.
I don't like the Fern gully btw no disney and Pocahontas 2, and that's saying something I love sequels...2:16 mwah I'm so bless to have Rescuers down under on dvd
Now all we need is to find someone to get rid of the live action trend.
