    Thanks for this interview Kris; because of you and others in the Body of Christ I have become debt free and am now putting money away for myself and also in the last six month have been able to help both my daughters financially through loans and giving where needed. I started out as a missionary in Japan and now am supporting missionaries who are volunteers. Great stuff; thank you.And I bought the book!

    Thanks Kris and Samia, has got me thinking about myself as being a lender instead of being a borrower. To lend is something that demonstrates trusting God by being generous in not charging interest whilst being wise about where and to whom we lend money. This episode gives me much to think about.

    Kris, thanks for having this talk. I don't know if there is a good forum for this question to be answered, but I would love to hear your perspective on the way that tithing is described in Deuteronomy 14:22-29, where it talks about taking your tithe, traveling to the place where the Lord chose to put His name, and either eating your tithe there or selling it, taking the money to that place and spend it on something you love (including possibly strong drink or whatever your heart desires) and then eating in the presence of God. It seems to be a radically different understanding of the tithe, but I almost never hear anyone address it in a church context. I would love to hear your take on it sometime (or Samia's, too)

      There were 4 types of tithes mentioned under Mosaic Law. The Levitical tithe, the tithe the Levites submitted to the Priests, the poor tithe (every 3 years), and the tithe for the festival(s). Deuteronomy refers to the tithe of the festival where consumable items were consumed at shared at the place of meeting. In every case, all systematic tithes were received as consumable items although it's evident money was traded and earned during those times.

    It’s more about how you make money and what you do with what you have been entrusted with. The truth is the lord knows everything and our intentions deep down is known. I like this woman and my mother grew up in queens in a heavy Jewish area of flushing meadows. In that neighborhood they have houses when everyone else lives in a high rise box. They don’t have a house payment and education is a large focus due to history.

      Abraham did not pay tithes , he gave 10% ONE TIME , tithing was under the law , it was a required 10% on ALL INCOME , if the hirelings can get you to reject what JESUS did for you on the cross , and go back and live under the curse of the law , they will get your money , and you will live under the curse of the law .

    I would say to aggressively build an emergency fund so that a credit card is not even necessary for “emergencies”. There is so little stress when I have a sudden $2500 car repair that I don’t have to put on a Mastercard. Proverbs speaks of escaping debt like a gazelle escaping a lion…

    Thankfulness and worship go hand in hand. Abraham was thankful for the victory and worshipped God in giving a tenth of the spoils to the priest Melchizedek. This is often, practically always, used to justify New Testament tithing because it was done before the Mosaic law was given. But I think that point is being missed. Abraham GAVE as an act of worship and not out of obligation. Christians likewise should give out of thankfulness and worship. This is our example not the amount! Is your heart leading you out of love to give or are you feeling condemned that you are not giving enough? I would like to suggest that if you are feeling condemned, to take a time of not giving at all to anyone until you have established your heart in thankfulness and worship to God. Once that is corrected, give with love when and where you can not concerned with the amount but the heart attitude in giving. Do not live under the cloud of the law but be free to be a cheerful giver. Blessings to you!

    T'rumah, Tithes and Taxes
    That an uncircumcised person shall not eat of the t'rumah (heave offering), and the same applies to other holy things. This rule is inferred from the law of the Paschal offering, by similarity of phrase (Ex. 12:44-45 and Lev. 22:10) but it is not explicitly set forth in the Torah. Traditionally, it has been learnt that the rule that the uncircumcised must not eat holy things is an essential principle of the Torah and not an enactment of the Scribes (negative).     Not to alter the order of separating the t'rumah and the tithes; the separation be in the order first-fruits at the beginning, then the t'rumah, then the first tithe, and last the second tithe (Ex. 22:28) (negative) (CCI19).
    To give half a shekel every year (to the Sanctuary for provision of the public sacrifices) (Ex. 30:13) (affirmative). See Shabbat Sheqalim
    That a kohein who is unclean shall not eat of the t'rumah (Lev. 22:3-4) (negative). See Kohein.
    That a person who is not a kohein or the wife or unmarried daughter of a kohein shall not eat of the t'rumah (Lev. 22:10) (negative). See Kohein.
    That a sojourner with a kohein or his hired servant shall not eat of the t'rumah (Lev. 22:10) (negative). See Kohein.
    Not to eat tevel (something from which the t'rumah and tithe have not yet been separated) (Lev. 22:15) (negative) (CCI18).

    Not to expend the proceeds of the second tithe on anything but food and drink (Deut. 26:14). Anything outside of things necessary for sustenance comes within the class in the phrase "Given for the dead" (negative).
    Not to eat the Second Tithe, even in Jerusalem, in a state of uncleanness, until the tithe had been redeemed (Deut. 26:14) (negative).
    Not to eat the Second Tithe, when mourning (Deut. 26:14) (negative).
    To make the declaration, when bringing the second tithe to the Sanctuary (Deut. 26:13) (affirmative) (CCI17).

    It's remarkable how many scripture verses are said to be about money, when they have nothing to do with money. Luke 6:38 is a reference to judgement and forgiveness and at no point in the bible were tithes received from earned wages, although monetary wages were paid during those times (Haggai 1:6). Only consumable items were accepted as systematic tithe deliverables and if a tithe was redeemed, there was a penalty for doing so. The "Prosperity Gospel" exploits the very people we should be helping. There's nothing wrong with being wealthy, and giving is front and center in the Christian faith, but God isn't a mob boss or a slot machine. We're free to give, not bound to pay.

    I ADORE this woman but even if we are all supposed to be wealthy (in Scripture I can see you can interpret that) I grew up in a world that was a high percentage Jewish, and am myself Jewish. We are NOT all rich or successful. 99% or 100% of us are very smart. But not all are wealthy.

      On the darker side of being Jewish a lot of us have generations of trauma and persecution which has become an identity. It should be overcome but it’s not an automatic assumption that all Jews are rich. Nor do we all run the banks, etc. The idea that Jews control the economy is part of why the Holocaust happened and we have to think carefully before speaking in generalizations about Jews.

      Just because your experience does not line up with scripture, does not make your experience higher than scripture. Meaning, it may not be happening in your life but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be. Hebrews 8:6. You are called to even greater promises than the OT.

    The apostles of Jesus did not use the levitical priesthood law of God to receive tithes and offerings from jews or gentiles, because God ordained the tribe of Levi to receive tithes and offerings from the children of Israel, according to the law [ Hebrews 7:5 ].
    The apostles of Jesus did not tithe to the levitical priesthood law of God, because they were poor. Peter was a fisherman. And Paul was a tent maker.
    Paul being the more knowledgeable in the law, said, if you are trying to be justified by the law, you are a debtor to do the whole law. For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified [ Romans 2:13 ].
    For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, cursed is everyone that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that do them shall live in them [ Galatians 3:10-12 ].
    Preachers can eat and drink of the gospel for doing the work of the Lord [ Luke 10:7 ] & [ 1 Timothy 5:18 ].
    The churches of God can give freely to the poor [ Matthew 10:8 ].
    It is more blessed to give than to receive [ Acts 20:35 ].
    God loves a cheerful giver [ 2 Corinthians 9:7 ].

    I love Kris and believe in radical giving, but tithing is Old Testament. A lot of what Jesus preached is Old Testament. Believers have an obligation to be generous, but no obligation to tithe.

    Tithing was never money and ended when Jesus fulfilled the Mosaic law. In her comment He was. Chastising the Pharisees. He nor the apostles never said to tithe.
