    That old footage is absolutely gorgeous. Color rendition is way more important than resolution, and the equipment quality shows. If anything I'm bothered by the limited dynamic range, but that's an inescapable feature of early CCD technology.

    Well done! The “engineer” talk is just what I like to hear. Technical enough and filled with enough information to let us understand what it takes to do your kind of flying.

    Love your videos! I just sold my PA-18 to a friend. It was essentially identical to Loni's PA-18. I never could fly it as good as you or Loni- that's for sure but I had many safe trips with it! I came to respect winds- especially in the mountains- cub drivers with 1000's of hours have "bought the farm" in those conditions which tells us something! Waiting out a wind storm one strategy I used successfully is to cut willows or alders then tie them to the wing to destroy lift. And of course if you pull the plane into brush-especilly as high as the wing- it will hardly buffet from the winds. Fly safe and I look forward to more videos!

    I remember seeing Bushwhacker 1.0 at S21 some years ago. I really appreciated the rundown on some of the mods at the end of this video. I'm currently rebuilding my M4-220, trying to keep it as light as possible, and incorporating as many mods as "reasonably" possible (considered a Ti firewall, for example, but passed).

    Too bad Bushwacker 1 got a bad break when the winds caught it later that night and wrecked her! Really sweet plane! I love watching your videos, I only recently discovered them! You sure know how to fly your bush planes! Oregon is such a beautiful place to fly over too! And Lord knows it offers some incredibly challenging places to land in a bush plane!
    I've watched a ton of bush plane videos done by some great pilots and including STOL competitions, but you appear to take it to a whole new level of skill considering the tight spots you get in and out of!
    I'm not a pilot but if I were it's the kind of flying I would love to do! But wow, at the same time, when I think about the amount of skill it would take, and the amount of confidence it would take in a person's abilities with zero tolerance for error, I doubt I'd of got there! I took some flying lessons out of Troutdale OR decades ago so I got a little taste of just how beautiful Oregon is when flying low and slower (than a commercial jet anyways). Thanks for sharing your videos and its nice to be able to watch someone in Oregon making cool bush flying videos!

    I live in the southeast where there's not many off airport places to land. And I work too much and so not many chances to go on adventures, so I really appreciate your trips. Wouldnt a Maule M7 with a 235 or 260 hp do even better? Or would that just get too heavy?

    • @martinlynn3699
      @martinlynn3699 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sonshinelight Greg has more experience than I do but my understanding is that there is a trade off between the extra horsepower and the extra weight. By my reading, the 180 will break ground at about the same point but it won't climb out as fast. And that is accentuated the heavier you are. I have a friend with a 235 (that has been modified and now more than 235 hp) and he definitely climbs out better than I do.

      @@martinlynn3699 Im seriously considering a Maule as my #1 son and i have similar mission goals. Just unclear of the correlation between take off/ landing distance and horsepower. Interested in the Husky flap hangars. Can they be retrofitted to the Piper flap hangars? And is this Doug Keller of the Keller flap? If it is why did he chose the Husky flap over the split Fowler flap for this build or is this before he designed the split flap?

    • @mauleguy

    what do you think about the CNC porting LYCON offers? I think they are claiming 3+ hp per cylinder.

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not a believer in 3hp maybe 10-15% better flow which would equal 1.-1.5 hp per cylinder. I got those numbers from Hatch Engine years ago when I approached them about doing an engine. They did dyno work on lots of builds and that is what I got from them.

    • @user-ju3ns2cz1u
      @user-ju3ns2cz1u 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured you would be read in. Speed shops love to claim hp gains with out dyno charts. Typically a dead giveaway of inflated numbers. I wish it were true though or that there were aftermarket heads like in the auto world. Where cnc porting makes a significant difference.

    Let’s hear more about the Husky wing. Larger sq. footage?

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not (not) a Husky wing. It is a Super Cub wing, squared off (extended past the original wing bow). The flaps are Husky parts which are a semi-Fowler slotted flap. Hope that makes sense... This was Doug Keller's airplane. Doug is the one that came up with certifying the Double Slotted flaps for the Super Cub PA-18 which Airframes Alaska now owns the STC for.

    That was the short version? I'ma kill myself. It sounds like the crash came because you tried to 'roll' wings level. I will tell anyonez in that situation to use rudder to right yourself. Think about it to see this is true. It is, in fact, how I have avoided the dreadful prang.
