- Today, I'm showing you guys my newest side hustle idea, starting my own gutter cleaning business. See how to make over $50 per hour cleaning gutters! The idea came randomly after a couple of storms hit my town back to back. I'd been watching a bunch of those "how to make money" and "Top Side Hustles" videos and I realized the best way to start was to start my own company and build that up. That's when the gutter cleaning idea came to me, all I really needed was a ladder and some gloves right? After spending about $150 on a used ladder, gloves, trash bags, and an embroidered shirt and hat (gotta look professional), I put up a single ad on Facebook and hoped for the best.
I went about 3 days without anyone reaching out so I decided to change the ad and add a couple stock photos and a picture of me on the ladder in my shirt and hat and BOOM! 2 replies the same day the posting went up. I reached out to them and set up two appointments back to back to just jump head first into the gutter cleaning game and this is how it went!
Im sure someone has said this but...don't lean your ladder against the gutters, use stand offs.
With that said...I love people who have a side hustle.

I have a friend who has had a gutter cleaning business for the past at least 24 years (just gutter cleaning) and he grosses around $600,000 a year with just that business.... He is doing what no one else likes to do or wants to do, so he gets paid for it.
It’s nuts how well you can expand if you’re willing to do the work! Sounds like he’s got a good business sense and work ethic!
Holy shit! This comment really cements my decision on starting up my own little business, I just have to do the research because I don’t know the first thing about starting/ running a business of any kind, just tired of getting horrible pay for a job I put most of my time into, I’m over that I want to have my own freedom to work for myself in my own business, besides I find gutter cleaning satisfying so it’s like the stars are all lined up for ya boy

For sure lol, I’ve definitely increased prices since then and looking back I can see why I got so much business…I was the $99 guy 😅 we have a much better system in place now

You need to get a Ladder stabilizer It will show you more professionalism Also your safety And when The leaves are dry just blow it And note to self charge more dude But keep up the great work

I’m not sure sorry, I’m based out of Washington. You can certainly start without one but always better to have a license and insurance if possible
I try to avoid FB since it's hostile to conservatives (as is this site). I'd use the local trading paper.
If you also start moving for people, you'll end up doing all sorts of things for your clients. In time, word spreads about good workers.

I currently have a job, and could use some more income with how expensive things are getting. So here I am, doing what seems to be an adventure. Trying something new and I like it. Question - what are the steps you took to get an LLC and insurance?
Safety is first. Be careful with aluminum ladders by the house's power supply. Also, you cannot be that cheap. Not only do you mess up the market for this trade but if your company is legitimate you have insurance costs and taxes. You didn't make 55 an hour. One more thing, if you're not properly cleaning the downspouts, theres no point. At least you're willing to learn though.

Thank you! I would highly recommend starting advertising on FB Community groups and NextDoor. I got all of my business from there for the first few months and still get 70% from those 2 sources today.

Learning these lessons as I go and that’s one that won’t be happening again, I have two blowers now.
@@therealgrind1187 when you blow the leaves, do you still clean the debris you've created on the lawn/driveway?
@@brmici7065 Absolutely! One of the biggest pain points customers have after home services are done is the mess left behind. If I decide to blow the gutters out I make sure to clean off the deck, driveway, and surrounding lawn area by blowing whatever mess I made. Usually, I'll hand clean a majority of the debris out first then blow the remaining debris out if its a well kept area but if its a more forested property or unkept I can get away with blowing it all out!
No blower , unless you want extra work cleaning the ground and bushes , use a wet n dry shop vac .
This job is worth about 500$ if not more. I understand you’re just starting but just be realistic dude climbing on a roof for a cheap restaurant is not worth it.

Thanks. I'm a union roofer and waterproofer. I want to start with roof cleaning and gutter and downspouts, and small repairs. Eventually do a few roofs and waterproofing, but start small and simple. I did it for the next man, so I can do it for myself. We use two guys just in case someone gets injured. 2014, 2015,2016, 2017 the price my old employer charged 275$ a hour for two people.
Get yourself a sky vac. You can do it yourself and keep your feet on the ground (no ladders, lower risk for you and customer). Can reach up to the top of 3 story house. It can blow off the roof of leaves needles and branches then reverse and vac out the gutters.
Gutter cleaning is not a hustle it’s a real business.😊
If your cleaning gutters out offer to clean the outside of the gutters is an easy add on because the outside is what you see. I use an extension pole a brush-head and a pump sprayer. The mix I use pool shock/bleach deluded down in water and a small amount of laundry soap. Rinse with hose. I also do vynal siding and widow's. Feel free to reach out full house washes are a little more involved but pay is much higher.

Thanks! I’m actually using a GoPro Hero 9 for most of the footage outside, I do also have some clips from my iPhone 12 Pro as well as my Canon 6D Mark II. Hope that helps.

I would say go for it! I’m going to post a new video breaking down my actual costs vs income and it’s pretty lucrative if you’re really pushing it. Th biggest thing I would say is start advertising on fb local groups because they got me 87% of my business. Make sure you’re safe and get a ladder stabilizer and good boots or cougar paws for the roof. After that just get after it! Watching this first video really makes me cringe on how different my processes have become to be more efficient and safer so you’ll learn more as you go!

wow I work at a pressure-washing/window cleaning business right now and after a storm a couple days ago I thought the same thing. gave it a search on here. great vid surprised honestly this doesnt have more exposure probably one of the cheapest side hustles to get going just ladder gloves and hose is enough to start.

Hey would you mind telling me all the things/items I would need to start this business? I didn’t really understand everything I would need in the video
Basically you need a ladder (recommend 20+ ft), gloves, and a trash can. If you have a little more to spend I would recommend a backpack blower, and water hose - helps make the jobs a lot quicker and easier to clean up after!

@@ZJSpellman I got simple 5 inch gutter brackets off Amazon. Pretty cheap and easy to hang!

My initial investment was about $350 so it became profitable after the first 3 cleans! I would suggest buying a 23-28’ ladder (I bought this foldable one because I started doing jobs in a Ford Focus thd.co/3wQKAUk), a garden hose, some gloves, trash bags, wireless blower (ryobi or Walmart brand would be fine), and Cougar Paws for safety!
The more jobs I got, I continued reinvesting to buy an extension pole and gutter cleaning tool, and more tools to make the jobs quicker and easier and starting doing miss treatments and roof cleans, but these first tools will get you fairly quickly through 99% of the jobs out there!
When you first start advertising I would HIGHLY recommend the Facebook community pages. I still get 89% of my business from those ads

@@najeemullahkhan2199 depends on how much you want to scale it. I’ve heard of companies pulling in 50k a month but I don’t do this full time so I average 1k-6k per month while working my full time job.
I'd have offered to remove the lichen growth up there. Recommend scrub brushes, plastic paint scraper. That customer could be a gold mine. You could trim back the trees, mow, rake, other odd jobs, fill in low spots, trim hedges....the thing is, these are all teenager jobs BUT teenagers no longer work! So money all day for very little.
You will need to get a trailer at the very least or a used work truck. 8- foot bed preferred. I wouldn't pull too much with that car, tranny might not handle it. Aluminum trailer if using that car.
Wear safety glasses at all times, ear protection when using power tools.

I am in desperate need of additional money and want to do this as a side hustle. I have been watching video after video. I have everything I need, but the only blower that I currently have needs to be plugged in. Do you think I could get away with using a long extension cord or would it be wise to pick up a battery powered one prior to starting.

@@erickhurtado8162 You can offer both and charge extra for debris removal. Most gutter cleaners ask where to leave the debris on the customers property such as backyard or bin but I offer free removal to make my service even more headache-free for the homeowner.

I am starting a handyman business and honestly thinking I can promote this very big in my area with lots of trees and fall approaching and I already have 3 leaf blowers and honestly I'm thinking of offering one base rate that gets me on the roof, cleaning the roof and gutters all in one go
Definitely great to have additional services. They now make up about 70% of my business!
The problem with leaf blowers, you got to be on the roof and you blow crap all over everything. With a sky vac you do everything from the ground. No ladders, no cleaning afterwards, reduce risk and liability.
A leaf blower will help you a lot. Want to avoid brushing your roof, even with a soft broom. It's hard on the aggregate in the shingles.
You are not charging nearly enough
This is true! I’m at a minimum of 160, average ticket of 220 now. It’s tough looking back on jobs like this that I charged under 80.
@@therealgrind1187 I'm $1 LNF and i have a $225 minimum for one story walkable roof and goes up 100 for every story after that as far as the minimum goes

Its the gorilla version of this ladder. It works great. It folds up to fit inside my truck bed (and inside my ford focus!) and unfolds to reach all the way to the top of roofs. I can unattach one sectino as well if it's a roof I need to step up on. Highly recommended. amzn.to/3bYRn7r
How did you start out the legal side of when you started out did you have to pay any state fees did you have to go through any test for a license to start ? Or did you just start up with or with out a llc ? Please help
That will depend upon what state/province/country you are in. For instance, here in North Carolina, it's $125 to set up your LLC. Aside from that, you don't need anything else to get going. No special licenses, nothing. Obviously, general liability insurance would be highly recommended, but it's not mandatory per the law.

Yes to all the above! Charging minimum of 140 at this point. Average sale tends to be around 220!
Hi man! I also own a cleaning business back in Quebec and gutter cleaning is big bucks and I suggest you to get your price higher. as of for me I won't move from my house under 225$ and this is for one story job 325$ is 2 stories.
325$ 1 story with leaf guard.
It's not all about it the fact that it only take you 2h but, driving to from your location to the customer, your equipement, your car, the fuel, the taxes, trust me 120$ for 1 cleaning, you're working for free ;) customer will pay
And also, with that money, you could get you Gutter poles that alows you to work from the grounds so you won't have to climb on roof

question before watching the video… wouldn’t a pressure washer work? wash everything out and then scoop up the debris
For sure would work, many people do that as well. The only problem would be if your gutters were connected to a system underground, you wouldn’t want to flush all that debris. But a lot of the time that’s a much easier way to do it!

To be honest, I started under the radar and accepted cash, check, and mobile pay (Venmo and such). Since then I got my business license and went legit but all it took was a call to the city to ask how to get started and they sent me an email will all the specific steps for my city!
@@therealgrind1187 thanks I appreciate you replying how did you market yourself while under the radar if you don’t mind me asking I’m currently a i union ironworker and honestly hate it I used to do gutters and window cleaning for years before and have been missing it ever since I left
Honestly a major part of it was joining the local fb community groups and just posting every week or so. Like Grant Cardone preaches just being seen was key so when storms hit or people noticed gutters overflowing they thought about those posts they see from time to time and reached out. Another one is the next door app, got quite a bit of work off that and believe it or not every job I hung a couple door flyers on the neighbors and got a few referrals that way.
Never used any bandit signs cause I have no faith in that but I did start expanding my services which now include: Xmas lights, roof washing, gutter and siding cleaning, power washing, and window washing so all the gutter customers got a 5-10% discount on other services for the first time and that help solidify a good client base for repeat services
