To be fair marcone was a famous leader of a crime family who met with reporters while he was in charge and people loved him. He was a hit with the public. Until they got him on tax evasion of course.
I think Oz ratted on her, not just cause he wanted the quick come up, but because her snapping at him in the way she did made him realize they weren't really friends like he thought. I think he decided that she was as two-faced as everyone else. Hell, in the very next scene, when she sees Oz at the part, she asks why he's inside, like he was a dog. This episode, I think, did a lot of set up with just that scene, in that Oz, feeling betrayed by the one person he felt was a friend, decided to say, "Fuck it," and abandon his morals, because seemingly no one else had them. Also, the scene in the car, just before Sofia gets arrested, she mentions how Oz being noticed by Carmine now means his whole family is in his sights. So, that's probably, when he decided to start telling people his mom was dead.
She asked why he was inside cause he was her driver… just like how Vic always waits outside for Oz. She also comments on Oz’s suit cause it’s a colored suit instead of his typical chauffeur suit, meaning he’s already moved up from that role by giving Carmine the info about the reporter.
@@SIREN27especially during a party hosted for her dads birthday which means the family was there….. it’s a bad look and she was already under pressure before the reporter showed up asking questions. It’s pretty obvious that she was juggling her fathers training and being a good person towards Oz. She only snapped at him right after being confronted with the fact her father was a serial killer who she’s knows in that moment killed her mother as well. She was sad and angry and he just happened to be there to catch it. It was out of an unusual emotion for her. She stuck up with him even against Alberto who was basically her closest friend not just sibling. Oz was the closest thing she had to a real friend and in that moment he chose to betray her to get a leg up. I mean even if she was trying to take carmine down why wouldn’t he have helped then and probably would have been promoted a decade sooner to a position he loved where he wasn’t completely trashed all the time. Then again she was too soft at that time.
No. Oz told on her, because it's his job. She was meeting with the press, which is a huge no-no. And if it got back to Carmen that she was doing that and Oz knew but didn't say anything, Oz would've been killed.
This show really putting the respect on Oswald Cobblepott's name. In the Batman comics that are more centered around the Criminal underworld of Gotham rather than the psycho supervillians, it has been confirmed multiple times that Oz is a brilliant manipulator and diplomat/politician and is actually plays a crucial role in helping Batman in his war against crime. It has been revealed that most of their fights were actually staged and that Bruce actually has a deal/partnership with Oz. He provides Batman with all the inside info and dirt on the various crime factions, and mob bosses, while Batman does him a solid every now and then by putting any rival gangster that starts being a thorn at Oz' side behind bars. It's because Bruce finds Oz to be the only villian that can be reasoned with and isn't a straight up psychopath hellbent on revenge or simply loves chaos. He is at heart, a polician who simply does what he does to get to the top. Bruce can actually use him. And he offered Oz an ACTUAL partnership, to simply do him a genuine favor every now and then without any of the blackmail attached behind it so long as he keeps feeding Bruce the correct info that he wants. And Oz also knows that Batman is the only one who can actually get a job done for him since he doesn't operate under either the legal law or the underworld law and isn't restricted by either.
Great comment bro... I never knew of Penguin and Batman working together in the comics. Just like how Penguin translated Riddler's riddle for Batman and Gordon...
It should also be noted about how crime actually works. When a gang is disbanded or dealt with, crime doesn’t just lower. It creates a power vacuum which often results in gang wars and potentially even worse people running the streets. Penguin is Batman’s answer to that, ensuring he doesn’t have another psychopathic murder cult that just happens to call itself a gang that’s running the streets.
Yo, if this is the route they take with The Batman Part 2....that would be such a crazy wrinkle! Like, what if a main reason why Batman isn't involved in this show is because he knows that a power vacuum in the underworld will cause more damage than a top figure.
I think part of why Oz was so quick to sell Sofia out to Carmine was because she disrespected him so harshly right before. He does not take that lightly, i.e. Alberto.
I don’t think he “snitched” on her as such - you’re not supposed to talk to reporters, and if Carmine ever found out Oz knew but DIDNT tell him, he’d be in a lot of trouble. And he had know way of knowing her father would frame her for murder and sent to Arkam
Lol that’s so sick and twisted. It’s 100% NOT her fault that she become that she is at all. She’s an evil monster because they made her that way. That makes her a tragic villain as she WAS a good person at first.
some people believe that oz snitched on sofia to carmine. that being said, under no circumstances should a family member meet with a reporter without the don's permission, even if she only heard the reporter out then threatened her not to run this investigation against her father. If Oz hadn't told, but Carmine later found out he kept it from him, Oz would be severely punished. As seen last episode, Oz doesn't consider this being a "snitch", but his sworn duty to be honest to the boss. He had no way of knowing Carmine would frame her for murders he committed and the rest of her own family would file false reports she had a history of mental illness to get her locked away in Arkham for a decade.
He did snitch. He admitted as much. Was he actually sorry?? Eh. But he did say it and she forgave him even before he said it. She tried trusting him against her better judgement and he still moved like a rat…. He took direct part alongside the whole falcon family in making a BEAST of a woman. She had this man’s arm sliced with wire for suspicion….. if she don’t take him out and go HEAVY knowing for a fact what he did we were robbed

It's kinda crazy that even back in The Batman Carmine tried to kill Catwoman by chocking her with some stick and later bare hands, basically trying to hang her without a noose...
The unmitigated *balls* it takes to have a show called The Penguin and devote a whole episode to another character. There ain’t enough Emmys for this show. Create more, and give them those Emmys too
Doctor Who used to do the same thing (idk if it still does) where they would have at least one 'Doctor-lite' episode every season. It's to let the main actor have a break of sorts so that they aren't burned out. Makes sense they would do something similar for shows like this, doubly so with Colin Farrell having to go through so much time in the make-up chair. I wouldn't even be surprised if that was a stipulation for him to agree to do the show. What's impressive is how they still managed to tell us so much about his character and change the audience opinions on him with this episode barely featuring him.
Yeah it happens in other shows. Doctor Who does a “Doctor lite” episode every once in a while, and everybody cries. But this is a comic book show, with an iconic and well known character as the lead, but it’s a *limited series* (unlike Doctor who). It’s fckin wild they did this, but it’s so amazing and they absolutely nailed the execution of it
As amazingly terrifying that she is and an fantastic villain, seeing her curvy figure in that yellow dress was a 15 out of 10, EASY! She was so fine at the end of this episode.
9:10 yeah her unlocking the memories of the details that indicate her father totally unbalanced her, leading to her snapping at Oz and then rambling in front of her father.
Not all of the family knew she was innocent. Some like the mom thought she really was crazy. But that’s why the bald dude was like I know you’re just a spoiled brat or whatever. Which is why the head and the bald dude let her eat. They knew she wasn’t a killer up until what they knew of her. Which is why she was able to stay over. They thought she wasn’t a threat while we as viewers just found out.
Not with the mom it was mentioned Carla(mom) and Viti were among those to write the letters to the Judge attesting that she was crazy. I suppose for Sophia one of the reasons for offing the family being that they didn't try to fight for her knowing she was innocent of those grisly murders.
Ow we know why Viti wasn’t scared of Sofia before. Cause he knew the truth. He knew she was innocent. To him she couldn’t hurt a fly despite the fact that thanks to all of them setting her up she picked up a body count. Magpie in Arkham and maybe a few more to stay alive and take out her aggression. And that teenage boy as well. Now she owns him. She is letting him live to serve her and I believe when she has no use for him she’ll drop him
Couple things, Alberto got her the lawyer, when you in a 'crime' family, NO TALKING TO THE PRESS. Most likely she was cutoff from the family resources including the lawyer team, cutt all ties. Alberto didn't care about the family business over his sister, plus he was the only one who constantly visited her. And in the comics i think there are 3 versions of the hangman, so I am thinking Carmine might not be it and I think they will reveal the real 'Hangman' at some point. Also by doing this, Sofia has caused a power vacuum for the underworld and I think it will back fire as we know the Penguin is still standing in the end, but depending on the story direction Sofia might be too.
He’s not an innocent person overall, but the more I’ve seen of Alberto since his death has made me like him a decent bit. Seeing him through the lens of Sofia has made my opinion on him change from my first impressions of him. It at least makes me understand his blatant disrespect towards Oz in the first episode.
Shogun has been my favorite show of the year from very early on, but if The Penguin continues on the path that it's on and manages to stick the landing... This very well may be The Best Show of 2024™ 🏆
You know who Vic is? The first disposable henchman. He’s the one that shows Penguin doesn’t care about using anyone including people under him. This is a comic book Penguin.
Oz didnt need to catch the first bullet. He doesnt work for Sophia he worked for her father. He did his job. She is the daughter of a mob boss and has the driver ..drive her to a meet up with a reporter. That's a no no. She should have known he was going to find out somehow. 🤷♀️
Well you'd maybe keep your mouth shut for a true friend, but Sofia made it very clear how she sees Oz from his point of view, he is the driver so she gets treated by him like he is her driver.

I think it's super interesting this episode's director said they wrote Sophia to be the closest thing to a hero in the story, and goddamn she's a fighter alright
LOL She's still a villain over all but just a tragic villain like Mr.Freeze due to her being the biggest victim of torture and gaslighting from all the people around her in this story. She's still the FURTHEST thing from the "closet thing to a hero" in the story at the end of it all unless you mean at the start BEFORE she went to Arkham, than yes she WAS being a hero by trying to help ill women but now she's a tragic villain. She IS a tragic villain and you can't blame her for going evil because they literally TORTURED her into becoming a monster because she was a perfectly sane and morally good person who tried to stay away from her father's business and even tho she wasn't AT ALL crazy at the start, she DID go crazy later on and went monstrous so NOW to be the new evil drug dealing crime lord, unfortunately, it's not her fault, as her father and the doctors in Arkham who were torturing her nonstop for 10 years straight made her like that. She's the biggest victim in all this for sure because she literally do anything wrong and she was only sent away for something that could make her evil mob boss of a dad look bad but that doesn't remove the fact she's become as monstrous as her father now.
@@Gadget-Walkmen I agree with you completely - I was just saying what the episode director said in the behind the scenes interview that I thought was interesting
Arkham Asylum needs to be condemned, and all the doctors (besides Rush) need to be locked up for life. I’ve seen Arkham Asylum in countless adaptations of movies, TV shows, video games and comics. But this is without question the darkest and most horrific version of Arkham ever made. It’s places like that that give countless people pause whenever they think of people who have been in mental hospitals or had mental health problems.
ngl i feel like this is casual arkham crazy mfs and the doctors don’t care drugging the criminals. this even has less murderous powered up supervillains no killer croc 700 pound ahh eating people. and if hangman killing 7 is a big deal i mean are there serial killers in this gotham
The video game arkham asylum was equally dark. If you explore you see a lot of hints that hygiene was not cared for, the buildings were not maintained, and that the patients were often treated like scientific test subjects.
"Welcome to Arkham Asylum” Where we turn patients (people we should be treating) into Monsters! LOL Sofia got tortured in that place for 10 years straight, no wonder she went crazy, evil, and monstrous. And she was an innocent sane morally good person but JUST because she had an evil mob boss for a father, things went crazy.
Detail that I love that's easy to miss is that in The Batman, Carmine Falcone used a crowbar to strangle women, while here he used his hands. Presumably he switched to the crowbar as a weapon after they placed the blame on Sofia to keep the illusion that it was her because with her in Arkham, there couldn't be any more Hangman victims. So he changed his MO.
Viti was kept alive bc he had all the connects business wise. Oz's connect said a call from "viti would suffice" meaning it gives sofis legitimacy. Also I was all for the friendship between sofia/oz but when she said you're my driver that's all you are. When they were friendly bit how she really saw him as. And then what are you doing inside? Like he's a pet. 😭 Also the similarities between oz/sofia & oz/vic is this how you see me aspect Also the way the episode cinematography wise was amazing. Having sofia go from bright colors to arkham dark back to bright color as she's reborn in a sense
I had a feeling last episode that her dad was the hangman, because I remembered he strangle Selina Kyle's mom, her friend and tried to do the same to her. Cristina Meloni was amazing this episode. I'm rooting for her even though I know this is Penguin's show. At the end of the episode I was just like "Oh no I love her, I support her and she's never done anything wrong ever" 🤣 and yes her and selina are half sisters. They did that in the new movie and in one of the comic runs
She IS a tragic villain and you can't blame her for going evil because they literally TORTURED her into becoming a monster because she was a perfectly sane and morally good person who tried to stay away from her father's business and even tho she wasn't AT ALL crazy at the start, she DID go crazy later on and went monstrous so NOW to be the new evil drug dealing crime lord, unfortunately, it's not her fault, but you can't say now that she's "never done anything wrong ever" because she most certainly has but her father and the doctors in Arkham who were torturing her nonstop for 10 years straight made her like that. I walked into a hospital because of depression and self harm but i was locked up on a "Ward" because its mandatory to hold self harm patients overnight for observation i was strapped to a bed among actually unsound people for almost two days taught me never to talk about my depression again
I guess this version of Magpie won’t get to fight Batman 😅 She might’ve actually been spying on Sofia for Falcone but I still felt sad about her going out like that
As a psych nurse, gotta clarify that ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) is WILDLY different than what's depicted here,. It much more resembles an outpatient surgical procedure, complete with anesthesia & pt going to a recovery area afterward. There's also prep prior to, and follow up monitoring for hours after each session. Also, I'll just speak to the hospitals I've worked in & say the admission process is also nothing like what was shown. Any facility worth it's salt understands the jarring nature of going into a psych unit & trys to make the admission process as least traumatizing as possible.
12:14 I think another reason for Oz snitching was because he didn't know what would happen from that meeting she had with the reporter, and if it got back to Falcone that he drove her to meet the press and kept quiet, Oz would be dead too. He had multiple reasons why keeping quiet would be bad for him. But I agree, I don't think he had ANY clue how bad it would be for her.
Internets gone to "im on Sofias side now" Arkham is so fcked up. Guilty or innocent. The treatment in there is inhuman. The idea of a bat dressed man beating up criminals seems further ridiculous. Gotham needs Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent wayyy more.
Which is why it's not really a comic book show. It's a typical Mobb show. Can't pool it in with other comic book shows bc there's no fantastical things happening
In the Movie "The Batman" and in the comic "Long Halloween" and its sequel "Dark Victory" Selina is Carmines Daughter. "Dark Victory" is also the comic, that contains the Hangman story.
Well they did tell the triad leader that they were gonna do a coup with Johnny Viti's backing, now it's real! Shouldn't have messed with Johnny Sack's daughter

Yeah Oz is not someone you would want as a friend. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up selling Vic out somewhere down the line.
I think she asked why he was inside because he's a driver. Why would he be inside ???
Never knew this thats awsome. My respect for oz goes up
Great comment bro...
Oz is the lesser evil organizing and bringing order to a chaotic criminal underworld.
Yo, if this is the route they take with The Batman Part 2....that would be such a crazy wrinkle! Like, what if a main reason why Batman isn't involved in this show is because he knows that a power vacuum in the underworld will cause more damage than a top figure.
That Inglourious Basterds "arrivederci" took me all the way the fuck out 😂😂😂
I think part of why Oz was so quick to sell Sofia out to Carmine was because she disrespected him so harshly right before. He does not take that lightly, i.e. Alberto.
That's part of it but I think the fear of getting executed was a stronger factor. Carmine would've slaughtered him if he didn't tell him.
I don’t think he “snitched” on her as such - you’re not supposed to talk to reporters, and if Carmine ever found out Oz knew but DIDNT tell him, he’d be in a lot of trouble. And he had know way of knowing her father would frame her for murder and sent to Arkam
one day batman is going to disrespect the wrong penguin 😄
Oz seizes any opportunity. If it endangers or imperils someone else, that’s on them.
@@rednihilist he ain’t no rat: omertà

5:08 in the movie The Batman Selena Kyle is carmine falcone’s other daughter.
Also in the comics long haloween and dark victory
She was sent to Arkham for life. She's only out cause Carmine is dead.
Lol that’s so sick and twisted. It’s 100% NOT her fault that she become that she is at all. She’s an evil monster because they made her that way. That makes her a tragic villain as she WAS a good person at first.
Sofia is without a doubt one of the best elements of this show. Cristin Milioti is killing it.
some people believe that oz snitched on sofia to carmine. that being said, under no circumstances should a family member meet with a reporter without the don's permission, even if she only heard the reporter out then threatened her not to run this investigation against her father.

"Hey remember those deep cut Batman characters Summer Gleason and Magpie? It's ok, now you don't have to!"
To be fair, I don’t know if we are getting anymore spin offs and The Batman will only be a trilogy. When were we ever gonna see those 2 again.
It's kinda crazy that even back in The Batman Carmine tried to kill Catwoman by chocking her with some stick and later bare hands, basically trying to hang her without a noose...
Sofia killing the Falcones leaves a GIANT power vacuum for a new boss, which will most likely be Oz by the end of the show.
This show somehow keeps getting better with every episode and man did this episode make me feel horrible for Sophia and what she's been through
The unmitigated *balls* it takes to have a show called The Penguin and devote a whole episode to another character. There ain’t enough Emmys for this show. Create more, and give them those Emmys too
This happens in plenty of shows
Doctor Who used to do the same thing (idk if it still does) where they would have at least one 'Doctor-lite' episode every season. It's to let the main actor have a break of sorts so that they aren't burned out. Makes sense they would do something similar for shows like this, doubly so with Colin Farrell having to go through so much time in the make-up chair. I wouldn't even be surprised if that was a stipulation for him to agree to do the show. What's impressive is how they still managed to tell us so much about his character and change the audience opinions on him with this episode barely featuring him.
well its necessary
Yeah it happens in other shows. Doctor Who does a “Doctor lite” episode every once in a while, and everybody cries. But this is a comic book show, with an iconic and well known character as the lead, but it’s a *limited series* (unlike Doctor who). It’s fckin wild they did this, but it’s so amazing and they absolutely nailed the execution of it
‘Yeah it happens in other shows’ - are any of those shows mini-TV-series? No. They’re established shows.
Italian women got me acting... unwise. Sofia looks hawt in that dress.
Stg ts had me like "should I go to jersey to find a girl" I think it's the accent 🤣
@@kabelo4321 they wrote letters thinking she wasn’t really crazy. She didn’t know which is why she was scared
She is letting him live to serve her and I believe when she has no use for him she’ll drop him
“I’m gonna let show cook cuz I don’t know where the show is going” - this right here, great twists and turns.
Johnmy Viti’s actor is too good to off this soon lol😂
Sophia looked so fine in that dress with that makeup in the end 😩😍
Sheera is really out for alberto isnt she. Straight up convinced that he wants to inherent the company 😂
He was still a spoiled drug addict with a bad attitude. Caring for a sibling doesn't make up for all of that. 😂

You know who Vic is? The first disposable henchman. He’s the one that shows Penguin doesn’t care about using anyone including people under him. This is a comic book Penguin.
My brother actually used duck pictures to illustrate how penguins walk.
Oz didnt need to catch the first bullet. He doesnt work for Sophia he worked for her father. He did his job. She is the daughter of a mob boss and has the driver ..drive her to a meet up with a reporter. That's a no no. She should have known he was going to find out somehow. 🤷♀️
Exactly. If he doesn't tell Carmen, he's dead.
Exactly her snapping on him made it waaay mor suspicious
He definitely made the smart play.
Well you'd maybe keep your mouth shut for a true friend, but Sofia made it very clear how she sees Oz from his point of view, he is the driver so she gets treated by him like he is her driver.
Mark Strong’s portrayal of Carmine Falcone was dope. He gave us a great insight to how intimidating Falcone would be in his younger years.
Longtime Batman fan. Liked Matt Reeve's "The Batman" and thought a spinoff "Penguin" series, sounded like an interesting idea. I had no clue it would be one of the best things I've seen all year. Love this show. So glad you guys are covering it.
The brother actually cared for her, he didn't really care about the job
She knows Johnny is just a henchman. She saw him bend the knee to Oz out of fear. She's pretty scary too.
This episode had me feeling like "Man fk oz and victor I’m riding out tonight "
using the wallpaper was diabolical
if he didn't get killed, she would still be in there. her brother was the only one to have her back. i wish she got her get back on penguin too
Sofia needed Johnny alive because he gave the Triads his support for Sofia.
What an amazing acting. She trully gave all she got and it was emmy worthy🔥

I said it once and I’ll say it again Gotham is always creating monsters.

Oz told because it could have come back on him, too. He tried to tell her. Then he saw what she thought of him too.
This show gets better and better with each episode, a rare thing nowadays.
@@Jonathan-fu5hx exactly idk what bro is talking about 🤣. The games version was waaaaaaay worse than the normal one we see in the penguin
"Welcome to Arkham Asylum”
Where we turn patients (people we should be treating) into Monsters!
LOL Sofia got tortured in that place for 10 years straight, no wonder she went crazy, evil, and monstrous. And she was an innocent sane morally good person but JUST because she had an evil mob boss for a father, things went crazy.
Oz did not know Falcone would be this messed up to do this his own daughter.
This episode was PEAK FICTION!!!
Also the similarities between oz/sofia & oz/vic is this how you see me aspect
Also the way the episode cinematography wise was amazing.
