Thank you! Da best video in terms on installing a mini split. I am just watching in review as i remember installing my own 24,ooo BTU senville inverter 2 years ago. The right way is always the best way but then for DIYers like us the biggest expense was tools. I spent more on tools than the Senville Set but then I told my wife: When you learn or go to school; you pay tuition. Consider the tools as my tuition. But then I got them back after 8 installations mostly within our extended family. Thanks!!!

Nice work though! For my side, i wish i did it last year by my self, because the seller send me a guy to install the air-conditioner for me, i noticed at the end that the cold is not good at all, but after this video i knew where was the problem... Lack of knowledge from that guy. I wish i did what you did bro.

@@doublesnake18 I do Bro: After my initial install I did another 6 units in my extended family. I am not trying to rob business from these install guys but I guess they are all overpriced. Besides I now have the confidence because I spent on tools better than some of them. I am retiring this year and my family said "Papa, why dont you consider installing Mini Split as your Retirement career. There are a lot of people that needs them and it doesnt have to be expensive. My thought would be: I will let someone install the inside and the outside units BUT I WILL INSTALL THE LINE SET AND NITROGEN TEST IT TO GUARANTEE IT IS 100% PERFECT. The key is in installing or connecting the line sets.

    1) you know the subject matter what you teach

Finally got it up and running. The only delays we had was because we realized we needed some extra parts (I’ll list that below) th-cam.com/users/postUgkxihMYiJNXcHdbH-7ihymsLz61l7jVyb5O . So we have a loft where our current hvac just couldn’t seem to keep cool during the summer. We have been using a window unit since we bought this house over 6 years ago (all the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 80’s and majority of the houses built like ours use a window unit). I hate window units because they are just so noisy and the one we had really only cools one side of the loft. I had contemplated upgrading our current HVAC, but with all the rising prices these days, it would take years before saving up enough to do that. With the advice of my father-in-law (used to run an HVAC business), he recommended we get an inverter instead. We thought we bought everything we needed, but there were just a few other parts we didn’t anticipate needing (which is what caused most of our delay). My friend and father-in-law did all the work to get it installed and running and now we have nice cool air circulating nicely throughout the entire loft. It is very quiet and even the outside unit is much quieter than our main HVAC unit. Saved ourselves thousands getting this.

This unit sure looks 100% identical to the Pioneer 12K unit I recently installed. THIS VIDEO is by far the best and most thorough tutorial on this kind of cassette unit on YT to date. Craig is fantastic and his other vids are equally good. Below is my review posted to Pioneer. I have a feeling a number of companies rebrand these Chinese made units.
Once installed, the unit works quite well. I bought the 120V model 12k with ceiling cassette. Have operated it for a week now. It is extremely quiet. It cools a 400sf living room with some spilling into the nearby kitchen. Once the house has gotten super heated during a 100F plus heat wave (like when you've been away from home), it struggles to cool the place down. However, if turned on early in the day, it will keep the area below 78F easily. Looking at the power consumption, it ranges from less than 400W to just over 1000W at peak periods on cool. But seldom more than 800W. Wow. That is probably about 3 times as efficient as our old window unit per BTU, and far far quieter. The inside unit measures around 40dB on high fan and the outside about 52dB! I'm very sensitive to noise but honestly you really can't hear it. I bought this unit for super efficiency and low cost running, not for super cooling capacity. So in that sense it is working well. I have not tested heating yet. It's another 100F day here!
    .
The installation took longer than I anticipated, though I am used to doing challenging DIY projects. Had never done an HVAC install so it was a learning experience for me. Bought gauges and a vacuum pump etc. The instructions were detailed, yet in a number of aspects really inadequate. Also, a ceiling unit is more challenging than a wall mount unit.
    .
The wiring instructions are basically non-existent. The outdoor unit wiring is fairly simple but connecting to the air handler certainly could have been explained in more detail. There is for instance an extra multi contact plug with no apparent place to plug in. Learned from Googling that this is for a wired thermostat control - not a word about this in the manual.
    .
The worst aspect is the fact that the air handler runs on 240V power, even though the outside unit is native 120V. Apparently they did not want to bother to make a matching 120V cassette! So they sent a 120V to 240V transformer, which is a big heavy lump of a thing that you have to figure out how to mount in the fan intake area of the cassette. As it's hanging above your head, it needs to be screwed firmly. I had to drill screw holes in the plastic fan shroud, hoping not to damage anything underneath. It barely fits. That's a pretty shabby solution by Pioneer in my opinion.
    .
I did a pressure test even though Pioneer says nothing about that in the manual. The flare connections held fine. I used a torque wrench. After the vac and test, the refrigerant was released and the unit worked fine right away.
    .
I don't think I would have tried this install without the excellent howtos on TH-cam. On the ACServiceTech channel Craig installs a ceiling cassette unit with wonderful detail, though it is a different brand it looks 100% identical to the Pioneer unit. Overall I believe the written instructions should be gone through and improved for non-professionals.

Great install. You can leave the flare but loose on the liquid line, and purge nitrogen though the suction line. Once it’s been purged, you can tighten the liquid line flare nut. Then continue flowing nitrogen to your desired pressure for the pressure test. This will allow for a more accurate pressure test, as with atmospheric air in the system, pressures may change just due to the pressure test not being 100% of an inert gas.

  • @dschlott16
    @dschlott16 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Nice work and thanks for sharing your insight. the one suggestion I would make, and I do with my installations, is to leave the outdoor unit high pressure line off and purge the entire system with dry nitrogen. I then do the final torque on that flare fitting, followed by the pressure test. This avoids pressurizing ambient air in the lines and indoor unit, which might condense liquid water out during the pressure test. Not a catastrophic problem, but it may take longer to obtain the required vacuum quality as you've got to wait for any water to boil off inside the system. This is only a problem in high humidity conditions.

Thank you for making this video, this is almost exactly what I'm working on right now and I have found almost nothing about it on line. I am in the process of installing a four zone C&H with ceiling cassettes and since this would be crazy expensive to get an HVAC guy I'm figuring it out on my own. I am a remodeler so I'm good with most if the job but never having done AC that part is a little intimidating. I expect to get an AC guy to do the pressure test and top off the charge, but since it took me too long to install I have no warranty so I might do it myself.
Again I can't thank you enough for all the information including all the links, you rock!!

Always the best videos Craig. Very professional. I find it easier when using the Yellow Jacket torque wrench is to flip it over and use the metric side. The directions for the mini split gives the metric specs too. And there is no guessing how much of a twist is .2 lbs. For example torquing to 25 N-M is easier and faster to set than 18.4 ft-lbs. And on the wire color coding, I think of the US flag (red-white-blue) connected to 1-2-3. (Yes there is no blue wire but black begins with the same letter.) So red=1, white=2 and black=3. If I don’t do it this way there’s a good chance I will forget the order when walking from the outside unit to inside unit.

Your entire home? I'd run a load Calc before you do all that man.. most mini splits are 12,000btu plus units, that's only 1 ton. If your home is meant for more I'd get more info before you start putting in mini splits willy nilly. 2 4 ton units is a lot of heat rejection, even by florida standards. In our climate like 2.5/3 tons per 1200 sq/ft is a good estimate.

As a state Licensed La HVAC Contractor... I have to pay 80. to attend a class to be approved to be certified before buying and installing each brand that the local HVAC supply sells. and they are so tight they won't even bring a mini-split to the class for us to touch or look at? just an instructor tells us important things about it and a book? and I am very appreciative of your sharing this install, I didn't know these cassettes existed this is perfect for grid ceilings. I noticed you stopped using NYlOG, you don't need it, it won't stop 350 psi from leaking if the flare is leaking. nylog is not a stop leak, did you ever try the flare gaskets, keep them just in case the flared end is suspected of damage like drop a wrench on it, copper gasket conforms to fills in a slight depression on the factory threaded flare, i haven't needed to try it but what other choice is there if that flare would get damaged your thoughts
what torque wrench are you using?, I am really surprised at how many off-brand tools you use. I noticed it has the certified calibration label on it. You're still using UEI meters, I have one cuz yrs ago i saw you use it. it's accurate but so slow to check capacitors cuz it uses AA batteries and it takes longer to charge the caps. so the price of field pieces has come down and i only use these for testing they come with certified accuracy and calibration tag. I can look my customers in the eye and tell them i use the best HVAC tools money can buy and they are certified accurate, they are especially designed for the HVAC industry. I keep the certification tag in the meter bag. Example i am 2nd company to check a bad compressor because they want to be sure or they don't trust the 1st companies diagnosis. I get same bad diagnosis of a bad compressor except the customer is out there watching me and i pull out my new clean Field Piece meter and i tell customer what i previously mentioned about this meter and i can see in their expression it is irrefutable, they don't question this diagnosis and i have to be sure it is bad before condemning it, ex 4300. condenser sale i This really makes a difference to customers, they see i spend money to buy a new tool just to be sure i get correct diagnostics. So i use a new meter on just for these type of situations. Your thoughts Craig.

*Very important note* ---- If you are installing one of these units in a ceiling with an attic above, the most important thing, is that the drain line is insulated, 3/4 inch SCHEDULE 40 or copper, and supported every 3-4 feet, If not the heat of the attic in the summer(hot as hell up there) will warp anything not stiff enough causing a dip, trapping water which will freeze in the winter and shatter the pipe. In the summer you will get a complaint call of water dripping from the ceiling and/or light fixtures, ceiling fans.

I live in Canada, Quebec, here we just use 12-2 NMWU and 14-3 NMWU, we don't run them in flexible conduit because they are approved for outdoor, also we just normal connectors because they are always in the bottom of the disconnect or the unit and they are both not water tight(like your disconnect has a hole in the bottom) We also never use those line-sets has sometimes the copper is not ASTM and fail sooner than later, we use some factory insulated one tho but we did had some problem this year where line-set from 5 years ago started to leak through the copper like millions holes! We also don't put crimp connectors, we just screw the copper to the unit(we don't use stranded)

Craig-you have made some great instructional videos-but this one is your best to date-thank you!
Now with that said-I have a question- why did you dry fit the line set.
The only reason I ask is because in all your other videos you stress the importance of using Nylog Blue to make a nice tight seal but yet on this installation you dry fit the line set and I was wondering if you were getting away from that practice of using Nylog.
Once again-Great job in helping all of us rookies (including myself) get into this field.
I no longer use my 2.5 ton unit-I have installed Two 1 ton units and my electric bill has gone down 9% for the same time last year due to the fact I am target cooling my home to where I need the cooling. (daytime-living area) then shut that off and turn on bedroom unit and cool just that room without doing the entire house.
You and only you have made air conditioning great again!!

I noticed that also , we dont need to use nylog on a great flare and manufacturers dont approve it because if it gets on threads it wll go way past the torque spec and ruin the flare.

Very nice install and very informative. Glad to see someone supporting the lineset. I thought Cooper & Hunter is made Midea? Usually they recommend 550psi pressure test.

Typical best practice is use low side design pressure, not high. In any case you'll know with a good micron guage if it is properly sealed.

Hi, best practice would be to not put more pressure than the saturate pressure, in this case around 200psi because if for any reason, the valve is not 100% tight, you will push nitrogen into the unit. This is a personnal preference, beside that well done

Good enough. Some manufacturers recommend a staged pressure test of low pressure to high. A lot of guys just do the vacuum test.
For multizone systems do you have a standard practice on how to hook up and pressure test to minimize the mysteries of who is leaking?

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  ปีที่แล้ว

Pressure test one zone at a time and after that is all done, you can vacuum them either one at a time or just connect them and pull one vacuum, thanks! We cover all of this in our new Inverter Mini Split Book at www.acservicetech.com/store and on amazon
