Just yesterday I heard Tuomas Holopainen the keyboardist and songwriter being interviewed on Radio Finland as the guest of the week, since Nightwish was founded exactly 25 years ago, Tuomas guest book says they met July 6th 1996. I do not know exactly who was there. Tuomas and Emppu, the guitarist at least I think.
They really did not expect the band they founded, and had no name yet, to be as long lasting and succesful as it is now. They had other plans too, Tuomas was to become a marine biologist, Emppu was a two time Finnish champion in judo as a junior, bronze medalist in the Nordic Championships, Jukka the drummer studied IT, but soon they realised music, Nightwish, was the thing for them, they decided to work hard for two years to see what happens, and a lot happened.
Tuomas said about his songwriting that he has never written a song just jamming in order to come up with a song. He has to have a story as a starting point. No problem he reads a lot and the world is full of interesting stories, real life stories, fictional stories, science books...
And then he asks the story what kind of music it needs, wants. Is it gonna be heavy, mellow, Celtic, folky...does it want a guitar solo, what kind of vocals it asks for...
When he has the whole song he challenges every part of it - could it be better. When he can not make it better anymore he introduces the demo he made to the the rest of the band and they have their say, and Tuomas is open for suggestions, because everyone in the band is a professonal and it is worth listening their opinions, but Tuomas says he decides in the end.
It takes him about 1,5 years to write songs for one album. Studio time has been reserved for 2023. I think he said he has 5 songs in the making already, at least some ideas for 5 songs.
Amaranth is an exception, he wrote the music to the song in 2 hours, lyrics took more time.
Tuomas thinks about music all the time. His hobby with his wife, Johanna Kurkela, a vocalist herself, is creating crossword puzzles. That takes his mind off of music completely. One of their crossword puzzels is published every month in a crossword puzzle magazine. Tuomas said he can not draw at all, and can't really use computer programs, Johanna takes care of those.

Of course first and foremost because we always love hearing Floor’s voice. But also because you are so clearly touched by her sincere way of telling no matter what story. She is so versatile and knows her voice so well that she never comes across as unbelievable. She is unbelievable talented but still is able to sound natural, what most other singers don't have. They do a trick. Floor not. She completely empathizes and adjusts the vocal line in such a way that the deeper meaning of the song comes to the surface. She also never overpowered her counterpart in duets or the band in general. Every part of what the band brings to the stage contribute to the whole picture. This makes as if they are sharing their own life story with us. Their emotions become our emotions. Joyful and painful. Angry and dedication. And that is such a beautiful experience, we search to experience this emotion again and again and enjoy it again and again with everyone who dares to open up their minds, vulnerable to this, because it reminds us of what we did experienced before when we first heard her voice. Like you, we appreciate Floor's dedication to her audience and the songs she performs. Later you will discover that Marko (bass guitar) is able to bring that same feeling in a song. That is such an amazing experience, words are not enough to describe that emotion.

Yes, she learned the setlist in 48 hours (or less, according to Floor herself) - there is an entire documentary about it here on YT. She was with the band about 10 months when they did this concert. BTW - this song was written for the previous singer Anette and she didn't sing the operatic part of the song at all - she let the backing track do the work. Actually, Floor didn't either at first - I'm glad she did later on. That part never fails to impress. Great reaction, again! I think the next song should be "Dark Chest of Wonders". It was the opening song for this show and the first time most of the 82,000+ people here had heard Floor sing with Nightwish. Hell of a way to introduce them to the Goddess.

Floor is one of the most gifted and charismatic singers and performers that I have ever seen. She says that Freddie Mercury is one of her biggest influences. It’s so evident. I think she actually channels him sometimes in her performances. She is a Valkyrie… 🙂 that much is certain… but she is a Valkyrie with the kindest and most humble heart. She calls her band mates her brothers and her family and she treats her fans like family as well. She is a star… and one who truly deserves all of the love and attention of her fans… when so many today do not… but yes… Floor deserves it… because she gives it back in equal amounts. The entire band is phenomenally talented. Each member is a star in their own right. But together… they make magic. Great reaction! 🙂👍🏻

That's how music is supposed to be. Felt not just heard. That's why Nightwish music is so completely different from anything else.
This performance is so incredibly uplifting. I get completely lost in this most magical music and Floor delivers in a way that totally captivates and leaves me in awe. Dopamine overload.. its almost hard to believe that someone like Floor exists :)
My favorite song of theirs, its also probably their most commercial song too. Its just a happy great feeling you get watching and listening to this song.

Floor IS very humble. She’s very down to earth. If you watch her TH-cam channel you will find she lives deep in the woods in Sweden with her husband (drummer of Sabaton), daughter, 2 horses, dogs, cats, garden, etc. Here is someone that could be a Diva, but isn’t. 😄🤘
Floor is an absolute vocal athlete. How the hell is she able to sustain such insane vocal belts, growls, clean, distorted, operatic, etc for this whole concert? If singing was an Olympic event she would have more Gold medals than Michael Phelps.
I would venture to say that you have re-energised a LOT of NW fans with your reactions. SUCH a pleasure to see this much energy and joy. BTW you talk about Floor and your impression of her as a person. She has what's known medically as "high sensitivity" (and Floor has talked about this some.) It is both a gift and a curse as she feels everything, including other people, to a much deeper level than the average person. So when she sings, she experiences everything, including the lyrics, very deeply. On the flip side of that, it's much harder for a high sensitive person to tune out or turn off, even for a little while.

That, coupled with what another reactor characterized as "purple, third eye-level talent" is what allows Floor to sing right into your heart and soul. Actually, that reactor characterized all of Nightwish that way. When they perform, they fuse into something so awesomely greater than than the individuals.

I loved your reaction, don't be alarmed you get emotional, it is Floor's power. I am sure also having the most talented band and brilliant composer alive backing her helps. Queen Floor is high sensitive, she doesn't just sing the song, she becomes the song and pushes that emotion like no other. I cry or tear up regularly with her and them, so good, and I am the classic tough guy alpha "Mr. Calm when others are crapping their pants." She is the sweetest person ever with her fans. Even Tuomas had to kill Floor's voice in his earplugs in another song - she is that powerful!!

Lovely reaction to a great song. Everytime I watch this, often in reactions, I am still astonished by how good Floor’s vocals are.
This reaction video looked and sounded great. You reaction was awesome as well JVB! A little surprising to hear you are not familiar with Nightwish. They are very popular in Germany as well as other parts of Europe. So much fun experiencing this song with you. It allows me to live through discovery of this amazing song as if it were my first time all over again. I loved it.

Floor was called by Tuomas (keys) from the States in 2012. He told her that they were in the middle of the Nightwish US tour and asked if she would finish the tour. She said she was interested and was given 48 hours to fly to Salt Lake City, Utah and learn the set. Two days later Floor performed her first show with Nightwish in Seattle, Washington. This Wacken show was 10 months later, but he first time most of these fans had the chance to hear Floor performing as the lead vocalist for Nightwish.

The high classical vocal section was originally part of the backing track since Anette, the original vocalist on this track/album, didn't have the range necessary. Well , at Wacken 2013 she was about 10 months in Nightwish , b u t she was thrown into Nightwish in the middle of a World Tour , she asked her if she likes to be the female Lead Voice , she had 48 h to prepare ... . All of the songs were not written for her Voice but she made them to her own .
All of the songs of Wacken 2013 are awesome , try Everdream or Nemo , the 2015 concert at Wembley Stadion is awesome too and some different , they always find ways to suprise you , try Greatest show on earth , or The Poet and the Pendolum
It wasn’t this show that she learned the songs in 48 hours. This is July 2013. It occurred 10 months before, when they were on a US tour. They fired Annette mid-tour, in Sept 2012, and they called Floor at her sister’s wedding and asked her to fill in. She had 48 hours to fly from Holland to Seattle, learn 15 sings, and perform. There is a documentary about this “Please learn the song list in 48 hours”. (As someone asked her on “Fan Friday”, “ could you have learned the song list in 47 hours?” She answered: “well I fucking did, didn’t I?”). She was just, at that time, a guest performer, but her talent made it obvious they could reopen songs that they had shut down due to Annette’s limited abilities (while Tarja was very operatic focussed, she did not hold the band back). They added songs back, such as Ghost Love Score, and for songs like Storytime, Floor talked them into letting her sing parts that had previously been backing tracks, like the operatic bridge in this song! IMO opinion, the ultimate Floor addition to the set list, not at Wacken, but at Wembley, was Poet and the Pendulum. The emotion she brings to that song in just stunning…….

Nightwish!!!! Nightwish is a live band so whenever possible do LIVE!! Otherwise you're doing yourself a disservice.
Thays what Nightwish does. They attack your heart and soul. Nightwish isn't a band. They are an experience. An epic journey. They can melt your face off or make you cry. Every song is different but epic. They literally have NO BAD SONGS.
As I said I understand a few things they have not done live but when possible, always, always do live. Thats where Nightwish excels. The best live shows to choose from are Wacken 2013 (This show), Wembley, Tampere, and Buenos Aires. And the shows are epic from literally start to finish. Always.
May I suggest Nightwish "Shudder Before The Beautiful" live from Wembley!

Nothing bad in crying when hearing Floor's voice, worry not. If you want to hear her in rage mode as well, you may like to check out "Disdain" by ReVamp. To understand why she was like so back than it's worth knowing she just had to go through the disbanding of After Forever, the band she sang with since she was 16, plus her own breackup with Sander Gommans, AF guittarist, who left her for Amanda Somerville, the vocal coach of Simone Simons, singer for Epica and very close friend with Floor. I figure you get the picture.
As for Nightwish, for some Tarja vibes you may like "The Phantom Of The Opera", "Wish I Had An Angel", "The Siren", "Walking In The Air", "Nemo" and "Wishmaster".
From the Annette era, before Floor joined, there aren't many good live recording and objectively she wasn't always consistent during concerts, due to having a mezzo soprano voice and not enough range for many of the songs Tuomas had written for Tarja. Anyway if you fancy yourself some jazzy Nightwish you may like "Slow Love Slow" (from the Montreux Jazz Festival) a song that could well be part of the Cowboy Bebop soudtrack :)
From the Wacken concert you may like the opener "Dark Chest Of Wonder", "Ever Dream", "Romaticide", "Amaranth", "Song Of Myself" and the closer "Last Ride Of The Day". For a theatrichal Floor+Marko duet you may like "Slaying The Dreamer" and "Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean" both live in Buenos Aires.
After all this you'll most likely be emotionally ready for the very personal (for Tuomas) and hard hitting songs "Dead Boy's Poem" and "The Poet And the Pendulum". This last one in particular, to be fully appreciated, needs some beforehand research about the story of the band and their abrupt separation from Tarja, since it deals with Tuomas' feelings afterward and how he felt after the fans and the media crucified him for her firing.
At some point you may like to check out also "The Greatest Show On Earth" a 21 minutes tribute to nature and evolution.
