This was a wonderful time for Marvel books! Since Disassembled and House of M every "event" felt like a natural progression from the previous story all the way up to Hickman's epic story.
I actually liked this Hickman read - not so complicated and tedious and interesting. Yeah, I'm getting rid of all my furniture. All of it. And I'm going to build these different levels, with steps, and it'll all be carpeted with a lot of pillows. It's all in my head. It's a simple job. I got the tools. I got the pillows. All I need is the lumber.
Anyone that's seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier knows the first shocker from the series- that Hydra had been running SHIELD for years. Decades. Overall, there's five or six such shocker reveals in the series. Lot of fatalities! Holy smokes- major characters from all sides get killed on-panel in a very permanent way! By the very end, thousands of people are dead in what appears to be global terrorism but is really collateral damage from the three way war between Fury's forces, Hydra and Leviathan (which is a Soviet era version of SHIELD but fanatical). We also learn why Nick doesn't age and all this ties into the S.H.I.E.L.D. series Hickman also wrote (which is more a secret history of the Marvel Universe).
Great review! I'd love to read this but the sheer scope of reading I would have to do to completely get through this is way too daunting! It takes me weeks to get through a Rebirth hardcover. To complete a Hickman read through It would easily be a full year for me to finish. then when I finish I'd have to start all over because I'd forget everything I read in the beginning. But it's great seeing you plow through this like it was nothing. Keep it up and you could make a big dent in your collection. You said Hickman needed to be read as a massive read. Do you feel there are books that lend themselves to being read more slowly and enjoyed in a more relaxed pace as opposed to burning through?
I feel that it's just Hickman books that benefit from a complete read through. All other books generally can be read at a leisurely pace. His books tend to have 4 or 5 arcs going on at once or are heavily information-laden
You should review volume 3 of Crossed. It's made by the same writer as Preacher. It be fun to see your reaction to it. Skip volume 1 and 2 you dont have to read them. Just start at 3

agreed hickman is better read in trade . i would also say if u like secrete warriors check out dan abnetts heroes for hire
