Who or what underates them? They were always successful and had their fair share of dedicated followers, plenty of live performances and have toured extensively. They were never over popularised like commercial outfits and are not aimed at a specific group of people. Why do people say, if something is liked and appreciated, that it's underrated, overrated etc?

*Everyone* who has been in Steeleye Span has been amazing at their role. (Ok, I did see them at a point in I think it was the 90s when they'd forgotten it was folk they were good at, and thought it was long-defunct disco they need to do, but they sorted themselves out again and they've been back on form the last couple of times I've seen them.)

Steeleye Span was the most influential band of my college years. My friends and I listened to them continually for years and years. I only saw them live once, but it was an unforgettable experience. There were so many versions of Span, but each iteration had its own wonderful vibe. My personal favorites are The Blacksmith, King Henry, One Misty Moisty Morning, The Weaver and the Factory Maid, Thomas the Rhymer, Little Sir Hugh, The King, Marigold/Harvest Home, Lady Diamond, ...

Agreed, they have been my favorite band for years. It was always on our bucket list to travel to the UK to meet Maddy, but I am a widow now, so I guess I can kiss that one goodbye. The earlier years, early 70s to mid 80s were in my opinion the best years. Not to forget Maddy Prior and the carnival band.

They are touring the UK again ... 55 years after maddy prior started.
Her voice has lowered, but rather than mime to backing tracks (as many old hasbeens do these days) she sings songs that suit her new voice.
And watching them... at Copredy for instance, they genuinely always appear to be enjoying the music.

As noted, Dark Eyed Sailor is just one example of that ancient mini-genre "the broken-token song" (the disappeared person testing their partner's love and/or fidelity)- see also Blackwaterside, Claudy Banks etc. (Banks Of Sweet Primroses is presumably another, but the crucial verses are missing).
The same album has a version of that quite startling classic All Things Are Quite Silent (it still hits even if you accept the theory that its "press gang" were actually naval police).

As a Newfoundland Canadian, I have a lifelong love of folk music, especially the songs related to the sea. Newfoundland, being an island, has a great history of traditional music, storytelling, and seafaring, and most of our population are of English and Irish descent. We were, after all, "Britain's Oldest Colony" before joining Canada in 1949. I have never heard of this group, but I certainly enjoyed this introduction! Thank you.

Felicitaciones desde Chile, América del Sur. Steeleye Span.
    All Around My Hat
    Below the Salt
    Parcel of Rogues
    Commoners' Crown
    Etc etc.

They really do have pretty much everything too...
From a cappella songs like Gaudete to full-on hard-hitting [folk] rock like Allison Gross. From light and playful ditties like Seagull or The Fox, to rather heavy dark songs like 700 Elves, Long Lankin, You Will Burn, King Henry, Edwin, Demon of the Well, etc. So much great music over 4+ decades.

One of my favorites is the updated rendition of Bedlam Boys from the more recent album Dodgy Bastards. It truly captures the insanity in away that the original more balladic version couldn't quite, and has some amazingly good riffs in it.

I recall a wonderful spoof of the broken token trope, in which when the woman produces the half-ring, the sailor produces a handful of broken rings and asks if *any* of them match. (And another spoof from the female point of view, that plays on the "sailor has a girl in every port" trope with the idea that "a girl has a man on every ship.)

There is a sad yet romantic rather true story behind All Around My Hat, going back to 1820 when the lover boy was sent to Australia for seven years' 'transportation.' This song was almost like a jingle on about every radio station in South Africa 🇿🇦 around 1975, if I remember correctly. Maddy Prior, Sally Carr and Tiffany Dalglish were my main "voice crushes." And Melanie Safka. I grew up in great days with real music.

So much of what Steeleye have produced is of great interest no matter their line up of that particular time. The most notable constant being the vocals of the incomparable Maddy Prior. If there has been a finer female vocalist in my lifetime I've yet to hear her.
So much of what they offer is of outstanding musical quality I wouldn't know really where to begin. You might try the Lowlands of Holland, Somewhere along the road, Parcel of Rogues, Boys of Bedlam - I could go on but will resist the temptation - I feel privileged to have grown old having the efforts of Steeleye to accompany me for a large part of my existence. Hope they bring you as much joy and as many tears rolling down your face as they have brought me. Thank you for taking the effort to hear them.

Seven years was the period of time after which a seaman could be declared dead if there had been no contact. I have an ancestor, who was childless, who left a bequest to the four sons of his sister, who were all at sea. In order to claim their inheritance they had to present themselves within 7 years of the probate of the will or their portion would be shared by any surviving brothers.

      @johnf-americanreacts1287  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Very interesting. Here in New York you can have someone declared dead after three years of being missing, but you have to have a court hearing to prove a diligent search was made, that there was no reasonable explanation for the absence and other factors.
