And that is why it does work... big dogs do it too... and that's the ultimate why it works...
It's why reaching even anal-ists price targets is met with resistance... it's met the price target some ass hole said it should get to based on their fundamental appraisal of the company... people are now selling, and not enough dip shits buying... and if it's far from those targets... people keep buying it up on the ask fewer selling on the bid... so it goes up to meet those targets.
It's why swing trading probably works fairly decently.
Just keep in mind fundamentals will always eventually catch up... but waiting for that to happen... you make absolutely nothing at all.

Eventually, I resulted to mostly math to determine my trades and use technical analysis as more of confirmation rather than a signal to entry. So you aren't a trader.
Anyway: I have heard about high-frequency trading. This should also become apparent because I wrote above "For your self-coded high-frequency millisecond strategies?"
Let me talk a bit about institutional high-frequency trading: Because I really think it's a misunderstood thing. Because as far as I know, almost all of that is market-making. Market makers provide liquidity to the exchanges, and they get paid to do that. It's not something a retail trader should care about or even worry about. It actually makes the market more tradable by narrowing the bid-ask spread. As a retail trader, 90 msec really doesn't matter (and that's if you sit in Europe trading American markets). It's a fraction of your reaction time, and most markets don't even move a single tick in this period of time, so there is no money to be made (again: prices don't update so quickly in most markets, You can easily check that if this is news for you). No price movement, no opportunity to make money. You also have to at least overcome the bid-ask spread.
Because of that reason, trading on this timeframe is not really profitable for anyone, including hedge funds (and again, you can easily check that if you don't know this already or don't believe me, just watch some markets, they don't move so quickly and without movement, you can't make money). The people who make money in this timeframe are market makers / liquidity providers, that make their money by "making a market." They buy and sell at the same time and are not interested in direction. They make money from the spread.
I think most people think high-frequency trading is this magical super-sophisticated thing that high-tech hedge funds do to "beat" you and everyone else with speed. This is really not true, as you can see (assuming you believe me). Therefore, for all practical purposes, milliseconds DON'T make a huge difference.
And with respect to market makers: They get paid by the exchange for the most part because they provide a service to the exchange (decreasing the spread and increasing liquidity). They are also given certain mass order types by the exchange that don't exist for anyone else. Their hardware is colocalized at the exchange, and the space is provided by the exchanges. They worry about speed, but they get the speed they want because the exchange helps them.

This was great. I hate when people talk about technical analysis and 100's of indicators.
The best thing you can do is learn how price action works. Keep it simple.
Learn S/R levels, momentum, and perhaps Fibonacci as well to confirm your levels.
And no strategy ever works 100% anyways... but you can definitely use price action to make money on a consistent basis.

The funny thing about technical analysis is that it shouldn't work on a mathematical level, but it can possible work if everyone jumps onto the bandwagon because then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Humans have evolved to spot patterns, even in random sequences of events. It's why roulette tables have a sign showing the previous numbers. However, with stocks if everyone thinks that a "double top" or some other nonsense means something, then all those people will sell or buy accordingly and the market will move in the way those people predicted.

    • @Mellow4202

I disagree. Retail traders will never be able to move the market the same way that banks and hedge funds do. All retail traders combined couldn't compete with even the biggest hedge fund. Retail traders will never have the same buying power as banks or hedge funds. It can become a "self-fulfilling prophecy" but it only takes 1 hedge fund to completely wipe everybody out. At the end of the day fundamentals play a huge part. Things don't just move around on the screen because one draws a line and calls it support or resistance. Price isn't moving because you drew a trend line and people think it's trending. A trend line is just a simple tool to help you visualize a trend. But price isn't moving simply because of that, that is just silly. Banks and hedge funds will move the markets based on what they think it's value is simply because they have the money to do it. Trade like a bank and with the bank.

TA is helping you to have the edges to spot their trace, and profitable in the long run (it could be fake sometimes though, but no harm, as long as it was worth the shot to risk it, also they would not fake all the time I believe, else it would be just another recognisable patterns in future)

    - Use FMA to determine where a given asset will be in X amount of time.
    - Pray
    - Use TA patterns to enter a trade
    - Add a hard stop because the market can be an asshole somtimes
    - Use TA patterns to take profits (works better then a specific levels most of the time for me)
    - Bring up the hard stop to break even (or even better then break even if you're greedy)

RSI is an oscillator. It quantifies the probability that the price will return to the average. It works well as it's own system in times when the price moves slowly, usually laterally or slightly bullish. It is then when you make profit by buying at the bottom (RSI < 20) and selling at the top (RSI > 80). The system based solely on RSI will break when there are strong and sudden movements in the price.

The good thing about TA is that in the absence of transparency in the market, one has to rely on something that gives the trader some edge. TA if implemented well gives a good probability of profitability. Unless you expect someone to put money down and roll the dice. I have been using a "combination" of TAs since 2004 and I am pretty happy with my returns. The importance of risk management cannot be overemphasized. Trading involves a whole of things that some people are not willing to take time out to learn.

    • @fr0xk

TA essentially uses price data which is basically market sentiment. TA is the only objective toolset tha uses market segment.
Question is whether these sentiments accurately predicts the future? Answer is no. Whether fundamental analysis predicts the future? Maybe but either it's tool leading and sometimes too lagging to make a profits.
So what else left? Trusting mutual funds or index funds and make money when economy over a decade makes a progress. But what happens when world blows up? Your finance blows up and you can't make use of cash anyway. It makes you an average.

I think the issue is obviously you shouldn’t use TA as your sole investing strategy. There needs to be more parameters that you consider to find a stock and time to get in. That being said, TA, definitely gives you an edge in PROBABLY predicting where the movement might go. By PROBABLY, I mean it’s never certain, but the indicators will show it’s more likely to behave a certain way. TA does not measure market sentiment, and is very bad at predicting highly unexpected moves, but it lets you use the data to the fullest extent.

  • @shaunsensei6948
    @shaunsensei6948 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Technical analysis is pretty useusful
The book "Mapping the Markets" has an excellent introduction that addresses the divide between fundamental analysis and technical analysis. I've extracted the relevant part below:
Fundamental and technical analysts occupy two camps which are separated by a wide gulf. Few analysts straddle this gulf and what interchange there is between the two camps can be adversarial. Technical analysts are often perceived by economists as having a “mystic” tendency while, from the other side of the divide, fundamental analysts are thought to be detached from the real world as, for example, when just one month before the onset of the 1990 US recession, a group of economists put out a joint statement ruling out any downturn for at least one to three years.Essentially this hostility reflects a lack of understanding about the strengths and weaknesses inherent in both types of analysis. Technical analysis has a good track record in predicting market outcomes, although some of those involved in the financial markets remain unconvinced by the methodology in the mistaken belief that it lacks analytical rigour. Fundamental analysis, however, is useful in gauging what is happening in an economy (and therefore in explaining what is driving the trends that technical analysts are watching), but it has always been slow to pick up turning points. The mutual suspicion between technical and fundamental analysts belies the fact that both forms of analysis are rooted in cycle theory. The business cycle is an integral part of economic analysis, and a belief in the cyclical nature of markets is a central plank of technical analysis. Cycle analysis is, therefore, the interface between fundamental and technical analysis.

My worthless two cents: I don't use TA to predict the future; I use it to assess my current risk level. If the fear and greed index is high greed, RSI is overbought and putting in bearish divergences, and everyone is talking about the market as the price is chugging toward a resistance level, I'll sideline some profits as a hedge. Additionally, I will hold my monthly DCA for longer if the conditions I mentioned above are present. Usually if you trade crypto, its a safe bet you're going to see a -20% not long after everyone's all euphoric, and having your monthly DCA and profits sidelined for those days makes them fun rather than scary. It's pretty foolproof, and not over reliant on searching for patterns or looking at day to day price action. Overall, my return this past year has beat the market. Not by a ton, about 20%, but by enough to make this strategy worthwhile imo.

The best advice I can give anyone is to focus on what the chart is showing you, don’t try and create opportunity’s that aren’t there. If something looks obviously bearish, don’t sit, overthink, and create scenarios that it may look bullish to you. You’re tricking yourself and that’ll hurt you.
