Hot Hatch In Sedan Form | 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI First Drive

  • The Jetta GLI has long lived in the shadows of the Golf GTI, but thankfully the entire Jetta lineup lives on in America for at least a while. If you want a GLI in Europe, sorry, that's not an option. 2022 brings a few updates to the interior and exterior to keep the appearance current in VW's American lineup but the GLI does not get the revised 2.0L turbo from the GTI.

      You do realize people that buy suv's don't buy sedans with their tiny trunk openings? Which in this car's case is bizzare, because it's literally an Octavia A8 rebadged for Americans, but the Octavia actually has a liftback boot opening and is extremely useful, unlike this crippled version which doesn't have anything, but the VW name.

    • @NoZenith
      @NoZenith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zeljkothegreekserb I want to like this comment SO MANY MORE TIMES! There are so few hatchbacks available on the market in the US. I know it's not the most practical but I need to be able to tow a little bit so I ended up with a GTI because no other hatch on the market even has a decent-sized transmission fluid reservoir let alone a method of cooling it. Side benefit it's super fun :-) even things a little bit bigger weren't as functional because I couldn't get my mom's collapsible Walker (mobility challenged so she needs assistance) in the back of a Chevy Cruze, Subaru Crosstrek or so many other sedans as d hatchbacks tiny trunk openings without being forced to put down the backseat.

    Excellent review as always. As a long time GTI owner if I were shopping for a compact sedan, it would be be difficult to top the appeal of the GLI. As implied in the video the GLI doesn't get the engine enhancements of the MK8 GTI, sticking with the MK7 version. But that's not a significant deficit. The EA888 engine is a marvel in terms of performance and versatility and the fact that it's the same engine as the GTI MK7.5 is a strong point.
    It's noteworthy that some buttons/dials are retained in the Jetta (including the GLI) and that should make the anti-haptic crowd happy. But as always there will be some features of any vehicle that prompt howls of protest from some. For me, there are two. The GLI, unlike the GTI has no rear seat HVAC vents. Given that my dog's second home is the backseat of my GTI, the fact that a breeze can't be directed from the back of the center console is a near deal breaker. Less critical but still annoying is the lack of a ratcheting lid for the center console. It's a wonderful convenience to be able to adjust the lid on my GTI (and on my recently acquired used CC) for my right elbow. I don't understand why more vehicles don't include it.

      @NoZenith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a somewhat lanky 6ft 1in embassies being rather firm in the GTI, the seat bottom adjustment is a lifesaver to give good support under my thighs. My car is in for some work and the dealership gave me a Jetta and it's not nearly as comfortable even though it's an SEL with more plush seats. But honestly never had a nice or new car before I bought a GTI Autobahn but I'm being spoiled by these Little Creature Comforts I never experienced before 😄 the only thing I would take back to my 2018 GTI Autobahn would be the heated steering wheel, otherwise I'm perfectly happy with my car. The wireless Android auto would be nice but isn't needed. I noticed the wireless charging isn't very fast as well which surprised me. My charger at home laying on the nightstand is quicker and it's at least 3 your old technology now

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardh3587 Cost cutting is the obvious answer but considering that customers might well choose the GLI over the GTI principally for the additional utility of the backseat it's a puzzle.

    Nice review. VW offered two versions of the 2021 GLI. The S started at $26,345 and the Autobahn at $30,745. My understanding is that the 2022 only comes with the Autobahn package (leather, etc). At over $30k for the GLI I much prefer the 2022 Civic Si which starts at $27k.

    I went from a Sportwagen TDI to the previous generation of GLI at the very end of its model run. After having had the versatility of the Sportwagen (without having to go SUV/crossover), I am frustrated by the reduced versatility of the sedan. Even with the seats folded to extend the trunk, the car has little to offer for that extension other than accommodating long flat items. However, I do like the form factor of the sedan vis-a-vis the boxy styling of the Golf, et al. Clearly my next car is going to be some sort of liftback/hatchback, and I'm actually intrigued by the new Civic hatch. It's much more handsome than the previous "boy racer" body that was way too "young" for my taste. I love the look of the Arteon as well, but it's way more money that I am willing to spend on a new car, it's fuel economy isn't all that great, and you can't get it in a manual trans.

      As a reminder this car costs less, with a single stage 1 tune will SMOKE the Kia like there is no tomorrow. Out handles the KIA, and has a DSG that KIA based their on DCT on. The VW GLI is a bargain when it comes to PERFORMANCE. It has an actual LSD, with 600 dollars becomes 310HP and 310 tq, is on its 4th revision engine and came with a 7 year warranty in 2019. The KIA has more options but the GLI is 100000% more sporty and the better performance car. We have GLIS running 11 seconds, the K5 can only dream of doing that

      My 2017 Jetta with the 1.4T engine is peppy and gets 30 and 40 city and highway, and more if you're softer on the throttle. Interior is still a bit spartan and cheap with too much hard plastic everywhere. The backseat room is impressive and my taller friend agree with that. The big trunk helps you haul around more of our worldly possessions. The newer models are much nicer on the interior with more soft touch material but the sear still need more padding and support.

    I love Alex’s reviews. His reviews are so concise and he quantifies a designer’s intentions are for every vehicle evaluation. He gets right to the point sizing up the important pro’s and con’s that brings high information value to people who just want to be informed customers. VW got the 2022 GLI right for a grown up that just wants to have fun with a “manual” that possesses a level of interior refinement. The ID is suitable enough for a broader age group too. Well done Alex and VW

    this guy was clearly paid or told by VW to state the DSG is more fuel efficient. That is nonsense, I can drive a manual more efficiently than any automatic. It's up to the skill/know-how of the driver. and not necessarily the type of tranny.

The new steering wheel design looks too much like the base model, also by dropping the S trim VW has made the GTI S the much better buy. The only nice change I see is the exhaust, actually making it sound much better. But I fixed that easily on mine with a MBRP with black carbon fiber tips.

The gap between the wheel arch and tire is unreal for this being a sporty car.
