One thing that I've learned as a vocalist and as time has progressed. The further the technique developes, the harder it gets to explain how's it done. I remembered back in the day (like in 2010 or 2011) that I could instantly explain my technique from the beginning to end and talk for hours on every little detail on how I did it. Nowdays I can only explain fragments of how I do it because the technique has changed over time due to experimentation and trial and error, and let's not forget that some information has been forgotten on the way. I usually think that the growls and screams becomes personalized as time passes. All of us usually starts at the same point and then goes in different directions. Like he mentioned, he did not have any information about it and only started researching 10 years later into his career. I think that the information on his basic fundamental of technique has been forgotten due to his vocals has advanced over the years.
If you want to learn about metal vocal technique in general I highly recommend the "Screamer Series" from VoiceHacks. That's what really got me started with doing metal vocals.

Literally my story of learning to scream. First cassette, screaming to System of a down, then In Flames. Then tape recording with a camcorder in the basement of a friend, then sounding like shit and trying to learn the technique in the first band. Then trying to figure out how to use my own voice and after 16 years i'm still figuring out how to do things in metal vocals that others do seemingly effortlessly ... it's a long run ...
In Flames, very nice! I also got interested in screaming partly because of them and some other particular metal bands cause I wanted to sing along but couldn't without sounding thin and constricted or causing a hot, scratchy throat. About four years later and I'm just now getting to the point where I can record a whole songs worth of screams and even do it a bit live. Now I'm trying to figure out "noted screams" ala Gojira and others.
For real screamers, of which there are so few, it comes from within, from the soul. Not trying to copy someone else. Inspired by the passion of other singers? Most definitely but not emulating. Very telling
P.S the best "technique" to scream, is to sing. Sing as loudly and as passionately as you can, from your diaphragm and project as much as possible. The greatest metalcore vocals and a great reference is Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies.
I'm pretty sure we all sounded like dying when we first try to do a scream for the first time, but try to focus on your belly and your throat, you should feel a painless vibration near your throat,if it hurts, you just stop. Also, warm up are the most important thing ever, doing them will improve your range immediately during your session 😬
I remember years ago I was 14 years being invected from my house and when I came home from school I went straight in to my closet where nobody could hear me and I felt more Comfortable practicing vocals. I was listening to I killed the prom queen and screaming when all of a sudden I hear a knock on my door and it’s the evection person checking up to see how things are going and he wanted to know what all the ruckus was....I died alittle inside from embarrassment that day hahaha
Technique is really everything. Its easy to pull of a good scream... Try holding it four hours of shows! That is really different ^^ Winston is really a scream god !

I started teaching myself how to scream about a year ago. When i first started, I gave up pretty quick. I thought it was impossible for me to make these sounds. Then i tried again and now, I'm very proud of myself, I like to think I've become a talented harsh vocalist. Biggest tip, you aren't going to sound like your favorite vocalist, just make your own sound and make sure it doesn't hurt. If you are hurting your voice every time you practice, start over. Try a new technique. Find your range.
He aint lying, mine was always tryimg to do some fear factory vocals, mixed with hatebreed and then a dash of old keith barney throwdown vocals haha with hatebreed being kind of tha balance or the baseline
My friends and me had a screaming session in the basement, when I was 15 or so. We laughed or asses off, because we sounded so bad. Couldn't talk for almost a week.
I agree with the finding your own voice. As long as you can make the gritty sound and it doesn't hurt, then focus on what you can do. I too have been disappointed that I don't sound like what I expect, so I have to change my style a bit so that it fits my voice. I kept trying to be brvtal and go super low, but after not sounding as monstrous as I had hoped, I switched to bit more aggressive of a mid to low range growl instead. Ever since I've had that revelation, I've been more content as my vocal style is definitely less heavy more aggressive if that makes sense. Edit: I have a really shiity practice vid uploaded on my page if you want to see lol it was the first practice we tried playing an original and we had played it pretty good a couple times, just not on camera lmao
Bro its funny started listening to parkway drive a few years ago I started screaming in 2018 to there song wishing wells I've been practicing ever since

This is the guy i listened to to learn how to do gutturals, such a beast
Wow this guy sound so humble.
It’s gonna take me a while to master not scrolling all the way down for the comments. But wise words!
And i started off trying to emulate Winston while blasting Deliver Me in my room
I used to try to emulate Winston’s screams but instead I sounded like a dying goat... I never attempt to do vocals again lmao!
I'm pretty sure we all sounded like dying when we first try to do a scream for the first time, but try to focus on your belly and your throat, you should feel a painless vibration near your throat,if it hurts, you just stop.
Also, warm up are the most important thing ever, doing them will improve your range immediately during your session 😬
dying goat? black metal band
@@Janzer_ Exactly my thought.
TheLightBearer I felt that😂
I can emulate Winston's scream but I cant emulate Lucker's scream 😓
Winston would fit perfectly into an episode of Laymen Gaming.
Australiancore are unstoppable talents
I learned to scream with parkway drive in 2008 ❤️
I’m really glad I’m not the only one who screamed through a bass amp 😂😂
So when he said he has exercises for 10 years until he sounded like a good voice in his opinion!?
dude in their first album his voice is amazing!
He was in a different band called “xChuck norrisx” for a few years before parkway was even a thing, he sounded different then.
this interview makes me want to reconsider listening to them again
I remember years ago I was 14 years being invected from my house and when I came home from school I went straight in to my closet where nobody could hear me and I felt more Comfortable practicing vocals. I was listening to I killed the prom queen and screaming when all of a sudden I hear a knock on my door and it’s the evection person checking up to see how things are going and he wanted to know what all the ruckus was....I died alittle inside from embarrassment that day hahaha
Such cool parents!
Technique is really everything. Its easy to pull of a good scream... Try holding it four hours of shows! That is really different ^^ Winston is really a scream god !
It's comforting to hear he did sound how he thought he did.
PARKWAY DRIVE = Beachcore. \m/😎
BBQore
I loveeeee this band 😫🔥
What a cool guy. Enjoyed this! Kick ass band
Kaddy'sManKave do you know the song they are preforming at 0:06?
We want a new album Winston
I listen to your musici.. and Metal core..toghether with my 21 year old son..and i am 56☺️love it...we wont to go to your concert in Antwerp..but the Corona virus closed everything...so wating then for another date....😥☺️🥰😷
Literally the best in metal. My favourite of his is the “to its fucking knees” in leviathan I or the parts of the breakdown from Siren Song. Legendary
The first time I ever heard parkway drive was bottom feeder and the way he yells it is so fucking brutal I love it.
Three favorite bands are Lamb of God, Hatebreed, and PWD. So cool one's biggest influence was another.
Ya like Gojira
As a performer, the best you can do is be you, performing....
My friends and me had a screaming session in the basement, when I was 15 or so. We laughed or asses off, because we sounded so bad. Couldn't talk for almost a week.
Dude you are a legend!
Bro its funny started listening to parkway drive a few years ago I started screaming in 2018 to there song wishing wells I've been practicing ever since
this is wild to hear because I learned by trying to imitate Winston singing along to their first albums
I love this band. And I love that his love has been with hatebreed. Makes it so much more beautiful
I LOVE Winston
I tried to emulate heaven shall burn but when recorded it randomly sounds like winston, not gonna complain xD
1 of d pioneer of Australian Metalcore. \m/
Well. Anyone who does or doesn't know. I can scream but can also do guttural. But I'm never better than this cool bloke.
I would love to see how and what youtbers Winston McCall actually or any scream vocalist would actually recommend to listen to for the technique.
This is so relatable, mine was in the car too, but i think it was with Deftones or Slipknot, cant remember. I still need to learn how to scream better. I wish i could afford lessons.
No mention of how long ago cassettes were used but when he mentions "before youtube came out" then he says "this is gna make me sound old" 🤣🤣🤣
Legend
Our greatest musical export after AC/DC, You the fucking man winston
Awesome guy👍🏻
Fry vocals*
He also forgot to mention madball and cro-mags as influence. Talked to him years ago on their first tour in canada with killswitch and he was chilling at their merch table. They literally are hardcore kids that started playing metalcore. Had a old madball shirt on and that's how we started talking. Lol
Winston McCall😍🥰
My first time trying to scream and it paid off in the end, was listening to PWD Sleepwalker. No jokes either
