Hope this helps. Just keep in mind that fry screaming is hard to learn, and there are fundamental skills needed to make learning this easier. If you still struggle with it, just try practicing singing and vocal projection for a few weeks, and then try again after you have better control over the laryngeal muscles.
Hello everyone. I never expected this video to get as many views as it did. This video is almost 2 years old and my older videos are not my best work. I have learned a lot in these last couple years and achieved my doctorate degree in physical therapy. I have recently released a fry screaming exercise program, and my goal was to make it the most straightforward and comprehensive fry screaming guide available. It contains many exercises to develop all the skills needed to be successful with fry screaming, and a much better explanation of how to produce the distortion, and how the fry scream works biomechanically. Feel free to watch this video if you want to, but I would highly recommend just going to the introductory video of my fry screaming program. Thank you to everyone has supported my channel over the years.
I accidentally did false chord while trying to fry scream and it did not hurt my throat, but when I stopped I completely forgot what I did and can't do it anymore lol
It's hard do it
mood T-T
I got it on the third try
The hybrid... nice.
You can use a low fry scream and add just enough diaphragm compression and having the right about of projection but trying to keep it voiceless at the same time will have your false cords activate and phonate similarly to your real vocal cords. To get this sound I regularly practice Tuvan throat singing and tongue and mouth placement to get the right sound I'm going for with the technique.
Lamb of God was the scream that got me years ago
Black label - LoG from Tony hawk underground 2👌🏽
I could literallt fall asleep to your demonstration noises. Soothing!
You must listen to A LOT of metal lol
Dude thanks for mentioning practicing in soft fry. I've been doing this a ton and really feel like it's been beneficial to me but I wasn't sure if it would actually transfer in normal volume.
Yea soft fry helps you figure out the right positioning to produce the distortion, but in order to make it loud, you have to learn to belt, and try to enter the soft fry positioning while belting.
i can control my soft fry really well, but when i try to strongly project them my true voice tends to come through too much and the distortion mostly goes away
Did you figure it out? Im having exactly same issue
That little To the Hellfire in the demo :p love it! I recognized the lyrics instantly.
Ive watched amd saved so many fry scream tutorials but this one just clicked for me! Thank yoh so much for your meticulous explanation of this technique!
Thank you Im glad it was able to help you. This video is pretty old (im not sure why the algorithm pushes it so hard), but I have a lot of newer fry screaming videos. I highly recommend my most recent fry screaming video where I demonstrate various exercises to make learning it easier, and develop the skills needed to eventually project it and make it sound powerful.
I think this video is unlocking it for me! I can’t do a full compression scream yet, but I’m getting that sound (in a bit of a whisper-scream) I could never hold before. This is really helping me focus on how much compression to apply and feel the control rather than just going for it.
Maaan I wish a vid like this had been around back on the day, because this exact technique is what helped me figure out how to scream, and it's so cool that I can basically practice anywhere, while walking to or from uni in a noisy place, while driving, when I sigh, it's so versatile. I hope this video helps many, thank you so much for making it 🙏
Thats why Is started this channel. I was a teenager who sifted through hundreds of videos trying to learn how to scream. I had to figure out fry on my own. Brandon Kennedy had a video that helped me learn false cord screaming.
Yeah I’ve been trying to figure out dry screams for years and I’ve made these sounds before but I just didn’t know that it was the right direction. Know that I know I’m going to focus on practicing soft fry on my way to and from work
After 2 years and 10's of videos. This video helped my muscles click to where i found the start. Now i just need practice.
well, I’m currently working on a full exercise program for Fry screaming. I find that a lot of people might figure out how to produce the sound but still don’t develop all the skills they need to be successful. so I’m making a straightforward program with exercises to develop those skills. Should be uploaded within a few weeks.
@@Scream-Theory that will definitely help a lot.
Dude. The first exercise was so good. It actually got me to nail the fry from nothing. One exercise I’ve been doing is alternating between exhaling and frying. So inhale, exhale, inhale, fry, repeat. I’ve also been alternating vowels, like Yo, Yee, Ya, Yo, Yee, Yu, Ya, Yip, Yaw, Yow, Yuuuiiiiiiuuuuuaaaaaa type thing. Also with R, like Ro, Ra, Rii, Rey, Ru, etc. Also my voice doesn’t hurt lol.
I feel like this would also come in super handy for zombie acting :O I love ittt >:)
Thank you so much! I'm currently learning how to scream and this video helped me a lot! Great stuff! 🤘❤️
Hi!! I started to scream as Chino Moreno when I was 16 years old and all went right for many years. Well, now I'm 35 and I can do the same sound but feel the erosion of my throat and sometimes even pain. Maybe it is easier to learn how to scream safely when you start from zero, but I wonder if I have to start from the beggining or there is some way to adapt my current skill to my physical actual needs. Thanks for your content!!
That's a hard question to answer, because there is many different reasons why a person can experience pain when doing vocals. If you email me and are able to give me some more information, I can help you figure it out. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com
So sound like a windy night or tv static. Got it haha.
Nice tutorial, though! Will try this out.
thank you. but honestly, this tutorial pails in comparison to the most recent fry screaming guide I uploaded. it’s a straightforward exercise program to follow and will help you develop all the skills needed to fry scream as well as a much better explanation of how to produce the distortion.
i ve watched a view tutorials now, but this did it best for me...Im starting to feel this fry point consciously ! Thanks mate!
Love the little bit of lorna shore sprinkled into the demonstration 😂 great video mate 👍
Tensed up? Tense what up and where? how?...
This is the best tutorial I’ve seen so far. Gonna keep practicing :)
Thank you for your kind words. But please instead watch my most recent “Fry screaming exercise program”. I promise you it’s 1000 times better than anything I said in this video. I made this video two years ago and I’ve learned a lot more since then. The exercise program is straightforward and will show you exactly what skills you need to develop in order to fry scream.
I had a close friend walk in during your “explanation noises” fuck lmao thank you for the help
Hey I usually don't give any notice or warning in most of videos lol. Probably best to listen with headphones
I learned the sub harmonic bass technique a while back so I’m having a hard time separating the fry from that as it’s just naturally goes back into the sub harmonic and not fry screaming
Imma watch this some 100 times lol
I have a newer fry screaming tutorial you should check out. I also have more videos planned to help with learning fry screaming but very little time to actually make them lol
This video has been helpful to me , thanks!
4:14 I got to this stage and tried it a third time, and successfully created the noise, I was so happy with myself and mildly shocked, because I'm 14. I can do the false cord scream but apparently if you can do a false cord, it makes it easier. I think I'm nearly there now 😅
Fun part is dickie allen of infant annihilator in a kardovox interview mentioned the "hybrid" where you are doing fry and false chord at the same time (mind blown). Then if you think of the different areas of resonance that you usually get by thinking of different syllables (ex. "ooo" or "yee"), apparently some of those different areas can resonate AT THE SAME TIME. I think that is how you get a sound like this: th-cam.com/users/shortsUMZ1tqojC2Q
he stars out with the "ooo" but then you see his nose scrunch up a bit like people do when they get a high; I think his sinus cavity is resonating to get the "roar" sound. So many interesting techniques and it's crazy how deep it goes combining them in unique ways. You are lucky all of these videos are available today... I know back when I first started to try to learn there was nothing. You're basically at the point I am now and I'm a grown ass man! XD
Keep working on it a little every day and you will be an amazing vocalist. =)
@@naejimba thanks man!
my mom thought I had asma
Haha shit can't believe I'm typing this off my own words and fingers, this video indirectly helped me realise how it should feel like in my throat. It's such a specific unusual sensation that trial and error will be needed, the catch 33 being not knowing which is the right way and needing practice to fully develop the necessary parts to engage while not messing your throat up. But thanks so much. Really underestimated how much 'diaphragm' push is actually needed, took me a good 3 years to piece it together.
yep the biggest reason why people have trouble with fry screaming is because its the first vocal style they try to learn. if you have no experience practicing singing or even FC screaming then its just not going to make sense. You wont have adequate muscle coordination or sensory awareness of what you are doing with your vocal cords in relation to what you are trying to do.
I can do like the very low Corpse Husband voice and goblin screams but not these. I'm excited to start learning!
watch my more recent fry screaming videos. They are much better. and good luck. you will get it, just have to be patient, keep practicing, and use your auditory learning
@@Scream-Theory Tyvm. I found them. I have been making instrumentals for years now it's time to put the vocals to work!
I TRIED TO GO AS LOW AS CORPSE 😭 then I tried to add tension and I just lost my voice, like, it’s not STICKING or something
Been doing harsh vocals for almost a decade now. All kinds of false chord screaming. My channel is a good example. I truly feel my voice is different than most. I've been trying to learn fry screaming for years and I think I'm gonna accept that my voice just isn't capable of doing it. Any method of finding that placement just never work. When i do get any sort of distortion it hurts like hell. False chords came 100% naturally to me and I am self taught. I.. Just don't think fry screaming is for me. Great videos though. But man if I ever could do it, I'd be unstoppable. Oh well.
I’m actually very close to finishing a fry screaming exercise program that should be uploaded within the next week or so. I guarantee you this is going to show you the exact steps you need to find the distortion. It will have specific exercises to help you gain the skills needed to fry scream, and it will even include recorded lessons with me and multiple of my students where I guide them to find the distortion so you can see the exact process of a beginner learning to get the distortion.
Also if you want to email me, I am very confident I can teach you how to fry scream. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com

Funny enough, this video helped me realized I can do it breathing in. For some reason, I just can’t project going out. 😅
Hey man. So this is referred to as "inhale screams". There is a bit of debate on the safety of inhale screams among the metal vocals community. I personally stay away from them, because I agree with the safety concerns. Learning to properly fry scream is very difficulty but don't give up. I have a video titled "fry screaming exercises to make learning easier". I would recommend practicing those exercises for a few weeks and then attempt to produce the distortion while exhaling, after you have built up some better control over your true cords. Hope this helps.
Holy crap I finally did it. Thank you man!
check out my most recent video for more fry screaming exercises
I always knew pretending to be a velociraptor and mimicking the grudge would come in handy some day 👍
Thank youuuuu! Couldn't find it properly but thank to the exercise I got the base :D
I’ve tried this way before and I sound like some kind of wildcat in heat or like a goblin thing! I’m looking for “WAAAAAAAUGH!” type of screams, but mine are just hoarse, raspy “WAOOOW WAOOOOOOW” noises where I can’t hear that much crackling. So it either comes out like “squaaaawk” like a chicken or like a cat with a sore throat. LOL
From what you are saying, it sounds like you have figured out how to produce the distortion using the correct positioning, but you are unable to project it or make it sound powerful. This is a normal step in learning to fry scream that most people experience. To fry scream properly, you need to be able to produce the distortion sound, while simultaneously performing a shout or yell, supporting it with your airflow. The vocal cords need to be vibrating while in the fry screaming positioning. That is what makes it sound loud and powerful, because that is how the voice works. I have a video with some exercises to help with this. th-cam.com/video/Ry4Fav-xM40/w-d-xo.html
@@Scream-Theory It still has that “untamed wild animal with a voracious appetite” kind of sound and that on its own is cool.
Pretty helpful! thanks!
I try as much as i can to learn fry vocals, but nothing helps me understand. I cant get to that frying vocal state as in it’s either to airy, or it just goes back to my soft voice. I also can’t get a good raspy voice to do it as it just goes into a soft voice,it’s really hard to learn stuff so it’s either going to take me a while or i may just give up on it. I’m having lots of trouble figuring out what to do
Same here!
@@yeahwhatever604 6 months later, I have honestly forgotten about this comment I have made. @@Nate_NCP Oh nice! Thank you :)
Thank you for your very good video. I 'd like to see more! You are pushing the air from your "stomac"? How you can get your fry louder? Do you use your head voice or falsetto? I have so many questions? :))
I would say it’s more like projecting your head voice but keeping your vocal cords relaxed. Getting into the range where your voice starts to naturally break and then adding the fry. It’s a very tricky balance but feel free to email me if you have any more questions. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com

I find myself coughing a lot when I do this
You sound like the wind 😃
The worst part is doing when i do something that seems right and is very distorted/compressed and doesn’t hurt, but it doesn’t sound that good so I have no idea if it’s completely wrong
Record yourself and listen back to it. You might be hearing it wrong so make sure you're not. If you still dont like the way isn't sounds when you listen back, you can play around with it and see what you're doing wrong or make adjustments
Still can't do, but found my problem. My voice just do not have this fry, i realized it long ago, my friens were talking like that just for fun, while i just sitted there and were like "wtf, where is my fry??" when I go my lowest point it's just low voice or clean air flow, I learned low falsehood and growl, high false scream, but can NOT just keep fry scream working
I was following your instruction just now, suddenly i made it, and lost it in a sec
great video!!
3:27 has me a little confused because I'm not particularly understanding what he means by active tension. I kinda got everything before down, but it kinda went 0-100 for me.
active tension is the tension produced by muscle contraction, where as passive tension is tension produced by the elastic stretching of muscles, ligaments, or tendons. this is what I mean about the fine motor control aspect. The reason why you only feel 0-100 in terms of muscle activation is due to lack of motor
control. Think of a novice piano player, who is trying hit certain keys, but they either undershoots, or overshoots the key. with practice, they eventually develop the muscle control to contract their muscles with just the right amount of force needed to hit the keys they want. too much force causes overshooting, too little force causes undershooting. this is normal for beginners of any complex motor skill to experience. We can either turn the muscle on to 100%, or turn it off at 0%. it takes practice to be able to dial in the force production of a muscle to generate a precise amount of force, somewhere between 0-100%
@@Scream-Theory Thank you! Wasn't expecting such a fast response on a 7 month old video! But this makes a lot of sense. It's gonna take a lot of practice but I'm starting to get the sound right!

Thanks for this video. Will definitely give it a try. Now there is something weird im not sure why is it, but there are days were I can actually scream really good which are... not quite often. And most days I really feel like my scream sounds weak, or I just cant keep it. Is there any advise you may have for that?
Thank you. This is an old video and I have recently made a fry screaming exercise program that blows this out of the water. I highly recommend following the exercise program, which you can find in my videos.
As for your issue, I can't say for sure what is causing it without hearing how you scream. it could be due to improper technique, or it could be due to other factors like hydration, how often you practice/rest, stress, and lack of sleep. But every musician will have good days and bad days. Over time and lots of practice, you will have more good days than bad days, and your vocals will sound better on your bad days too.
I thought this was going to be about Futurama
I watched for a couple minutes and then skipped through to see when it finally sounded like Fry...derp
It clicked a bit. It's like a cat. Like a cat sound.
Yes! like a bobcat growl
I wish I had seen this video weeks ago
I do agree, I find my practice is WAY better if I do a warm up, do a short short practice in the morning, rest and then do a full warm up and then do a full practice, that second practice is always way way better
I used to do this a lot when I was younger. didn’t know I was fry screaming.
I STILL CANT FUCKING DO IT!!!!!
spend some time practicing singing. trying to hit different notes will give you the ability to finely control your true cords. Fry screaming requires precise control over your true cords and sensory awareness of how you are positioning them. Without that level of control its going to be like stabbing in the dark.
I don’t understand someone please help me I reach only the level of lazy annoying talking and that’s it help please
Yea this trick ain't the one for me haha doing this just makes my throat tickle a bunch.
Damn I've watched so many videos all I can do is false chord screams and fry screams feel like shards of glass when I go high and my mid is sloppy
I seem to struggle with my throat feeling dry while trying this. Any tips for that?
It could be due to many reasons such as pushing more air than needed, improper technique with vocal cord positioning, living in an area with low humidity. I would need more info to properly assess. You can email me a recording if you would like to at Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com.
You can also try drinking water throughout the day (not just all at once right before practicing), avoiding heavy caffeine intake (1 or 2 cups of coffee is typically fine), and doing some cardio exercise 15-20 mins a day (increasing heart rate promotes blood flow to the vocal cords and hydrates them more effectively).
I used to be able to fry scrwam as a kid

Im currently working on an updated fry screaming tutorial. Most of the info will be the same in my past videos but illustrated and presented more straightforward.
I wonder if Mikael Akerfeldt Fry screams. The lows sound like his.
am i doing the vocal fry wrong? i feel like i cant breath or choking when doing it, but when i watch u, u seem relax
I've tried to make my vocal voice super smooth and clean like a piercing sound lol, so this makes my head hurt when trying to learn to do the exact opposite.
So actually, If you are good at singing softly with very little tension in your voice, this helps a lot with fry screaming. Watch my most recent video on fry screaming and you will see why.
Ok I will check it out! TY!@@Scream-Theory
It jsut hurts my throat idk what I’m doing wrong
So I've been doing vocals for over 12 years now and I'm trying to go back and refine things and learn different techniques that I never properly learned. Over the years I was only able to do fry vocals as that hybrid scream mixed with false chord. So whenever I try to do the soft fry and add the little bit of tension I kinda just slip into a false chord type of sound and I don't know how to fix that..
I used to have the same issue because I initially spend two years learning FC screaming before learning fry. even till this day, I feel way more natural performing FC screams than fry screams. The way I improved it though was by not practicing FC screaming for a few weeks and only focusing on fry. eventually, when I started practicing both techniques in the same practice session, I would warm up and start with my fry screams for 15 to 20 minutes before warming up my false cords. warming up my false cords first would always make me want to naturally slip into using my FC’s even when I was trying to do fry screams.
Got the fry nailed down. False chord is kicking my booty still
I don't think I'm getting the tense part right? I just sound like my mom told me to clean my room and I got an attitude
I have a newer video that explains this better. Its called “the ultimate guide to fry screaming 2023”

ETHS' Candice clot made it click for me
Ok, but you're making those fry's quieter than speech. What when you want to add them to your singing?
You need to project your voice like belting or singing with power and then try to slip into the fry positioning while simultaneously keeping your true cords vibrating. The loudness comes from your true cords vibrating how they normally would when singing with projection. Practicing soft fry like this helps you figure out the positioning in a low intensity way. Just keep in mind that soft fry typically involves a little bit more tension in the vocal cords. The transition from belting to fry screaming, will feel a little more subtle, and you shouldn’t feel as much tension in the true cords as you would when doing soft fry.
so i get to the point of "clickiness" and i haven't been able to get past that. only way i know is to sound like a duck / kinda puking it out, but that sounds wrong... it does get rid of the click tho
what is active tension?!
mechanical load created by muscles contracting. passive tension is mechanical load created by elastic components when they are stretched
@@Scream-Theory is it basically compression?
@@panema0 sort of. I think most people think of compression as squeezing the true chords together. But I am more talking about contracting the muscles that run through the length of the true cords.
@@Scream-Theory that sort of makes sense, is there any way you could explain how exactly you do this?
@@panema0 if you check my channel, I recently created an entire exercise program to help develop these skills. in phase 2, I included footage of my private lessons with students where they initially figure out how to produce the distortion so that you can see a beginner going through the process.
When I try this my throat tickles where I want to cough, is that normal at first? Help
That can happen in some people initially when learning false cord screaming, due to turbulent air flow in the space between the false cords and the true cords. It definitely should not be happening with fry screaming. Email me a recording and I can give you feedback. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com
Also check out my most recent video about fry screaming exercises and skills that will make learning easier. I think it will help you gain more control over your true cords and make this issue go away.

doesnt work
One of the biggest reasons why people have trouble with fry screaming is because it requires a great deal of motor control over the laryngeal and vocal muscles. I recommend spending a few weeks practicing soft singing, and belting. Then come back and try learning fry screaming again. We need the ability to contract the vocalis, and thyroarytenoid muscles with just enough force. Without motor control, it’s an all or nothing contraction. this goes for any muscle performing a complex task. In a beginner, they can either turn the muscle on to 100%, or off at 0%. We need the ability to contract the muscles with just enough force to generate around 30 to 60% of maximum tension.
Anyone i js hope in here while the ads was in welp did it work?
😮
GOKIL NIH PRINDAPAN
So happy I tried this. Totally wasn’t a fucking waste of time like every other fry scream video I’ve seen in my life. I’ve tried everything without quitting over the frustration. But god fucking HATES to see me succeed. So I’ll never scream. Fuck that. Fuck this. Fuck singing. Fuck it😬😂🤙 I don’t fucken care anymore. I couldn’t be bothered to give a fuck about making dumb ass sounds for even another second. Because months wasn’t enough. Fuck fry screams.
When I was 16, I nearly ruined my voice trying to learn to fry scream. So I instead spent 2 years practicing false cord screaming and revisited fry screaming, and I got it but only after I had built up some motor control over my true cords. If you are really having a hard time learning it, then I would recommend seeking private lessons to have someone guide you through it in real time. I also have another video titled “fry screaming exercises to make learning easier”. I recommend practicing those exercises for a few weeks and then trying again. every single person who has trouble with frying screaming has almost the exact same issues. they do not have the foundational skills that help you figure out the right positioning. It takes really fine control over how you position your true cords. The muscles are so small and most people can’t even feel them contract, unless they have a lot of experience practicing singing.
this still didnt help me and I'm actually so pissed. I've been trying to learn for literal 2+ years.
Well, if you’ve been trying for this long with no success, have you considered taking online lessons for live guidance? Send me an email with a recording and I can also provide you some feedback based on what I hear. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com
I really ain’t getting it lmao
Same here, i’ve watched so many tutorials and it is just so confusing

Is this healthy for my voice if I’m a vocalist?
Yes, when performed correctly. Soft fry should feel very comfortable. Full power fry screaming can be dangerous if you don't have a proper foundation with the correct technique
Am i the only one who nearly threw up after trying to add the distortion thing 💀
