Thx for this brilliant rewiev, Vienna was the first song which i heard and get intrested in New Romantic music. And than Depeche Mode came in to my "little world" and things where never like before
Sorry for double posting but I think this is actually the best video for learning this song on any instrument. I’ve been having trouble figuring out what chords are being played during the instrumental part. It really helped seeing the left hand notes on piano along with the melody. Way better than interweb guitar tabs.
Excellent choice for a video, this song was never mainstream in America, but it was an anthem for us New wave/underground music followers!!!!! Still is up to this time!!!
I saw Midge in Gdynia in 2018. He rearreanged most of the song to be played on guitar, fade to Gray and more were played... He is now old lovely Man, and during Vienna he started to cry :(
Vienna is one of my all time favorite tracks, for sure in my top 5. Really enjoyed your breakdown and seeing some specific notes I never really managed to hear out. Thanks!
THANK YOU so much, I´ve been listening to this song ever since it was released in 1981. Now you are giving me, 40 years later, this structure of this song!! You´ve soooo really giving me that this so called electronic music, has really the depth of this kinda music!! Just waiting for this ULTRAVOX / "The Thin Wall"
Such a beautiful song!!! Spent a month at number 2 in the charts in early 1981, but was voted the best song of the 1980s by Absolute Radio listeners. Thank you for reviewing it!!!
The thing I love most about this song is the way the chorus lyrics feel like they're sitting two beats ahead of the chords, even though the lyrics starts on 1 the recognisable chorus chords start on the 3 of the next bar resolving the tension of "me".
At last, ahhhh Vienna! 😏 Midge Ure was a marvelous songwriter, and the timbre of his voice is so beautifully clear. The warm/cold contrast here is stunning! And I loved your phrase about "respecting the listener". Spot on, yet again, Vaughn! Thank you!! Cheers xx
I first heard this song on 120 minutes on mtv at 2 or 3 in the morning in the very early 2000s and was blown away. I still get the same feeling every time I hear it.
OMG, what a great improvision of a great song. I would love to hear more of your interpretations of great songs from Ultravox, but also OMD (the third best band ever). Thanks friend!
Yesss Please! I Adore Dancing with tears in my Eyes!! It's got such a Beautiful ♥️ Melody, Music, Lyrics OHH the Truth is I ♥️ All their Songs!! SENSIVITY= ULTRAVOX...
I live Ultravox. This is one of the early 80's songs with such a great atmosphere. And that with the technical means that were available to them at the time.
BIG THANKS Vaughn!!! Brilliant & Classy as always!! Just like Ultravox themselves!! 🖤 Been a fan since The early days! Seen them twice and as musicians they are amazing and Midge Urs still got a fantastic voice! Hope they will do at leats one more show!! Hope you will do a upload of Ultravox in general! They been such a big influence since day one on the Electronic / Keyboard based music scen!! LOVE this channel!!!!🖤 =)
The bass was done on an ARP Odyssey - they used the LFO to repeat the envelope so each pair of notes was played with one key press. They did of course use Minimoogs, but the bass was definitely an Odyssey
The bass on the studio recording of 'Vienna' was indeed played by Chris Cross on his Minimoog. It's detailed as such within the 24-track notes on the tape box cover. Billy Currie played his ARP Odyssey as the lead with his trademark oscillations, although a little more subdued than normal. Thank you very much for your analysis, Vaughn. Ultravox are often overlooked as the innovators they truly were, especially during their initial incarnation with John Foxx. The Conny Plank co-produced 'Systems Of Romance' from 1978 would certainly be worthy of analysis!
What an excellent vidio Vaughn, thanks mate so very well presented, and a great piano improvisation. Would like to hear more on Ultrovox one of my favorite bands, cheers mate, keep safe one and all.
Wow! Thank you Vaughn!! This is absolutely one of my favourite songs of all time. It has been with me like forever. Beautiful improvisation by the way, About Ultravox, I would like some full album reviews of “Vienna”, “Rage in Eden” (my favourite), “Quartet” and “Lament” That is of course only a request 😉😄🤓
Very nice run-through and analysis. Looking forward to more Ultravox. I appreciate Vienna as a great song. At the same time they had so many other great melodies and managed to combine tender moments, synth and raw guitar and drums (especially live). Their last album, Brilliant, is indeed quite brilliant.. ;-)
Back in the 80s I could never admit to liking Ultravox because of Midge Ure's Private Walker (Dad's Army) spiv moustache...oh youth is wasted on the young!!!
Hey im a really young guy and im falling in love with 80's synthpop. I really liked your general disscusions about pet shop boys and omd. Could you maybe make a general disscusion about New order?
Vaughn, I put like instantly, just cause I know preliminary that most likely it’s going to be a great analysis and improv. I’m not aware of Ultravox catalogue, so it’s a completely new experience for me. Please, can you do a breakdown of any of Hurts’ song in a foreseeable future?🤞🏼

Brilliant . Incidentally there was no sequencer used on the bass. I think The Moog was triggered by the CR78 in the studio and for live work, later to be replaced by the Linn 1 That’s how you rolled pre MIDI and if you didn’t have a sequencer !
Mr.Vaughn George, been watching your videos about Depeche Mode, it´s been such fun to listen to someone as grown to DM as I am. Now about Ultravox, could you tear apart their track "The Thin Wall?" I think it´s their best track they´ve ever recorded, all that tracka tracka sliced ever so catchy synth bass, going through that song. I made that "Tracka" word up! You know what I mean! Please, will you do this?
@@VaughnGeorge I´m sure you´ve been listening to a lot of music, but is it that you´ve never heard that "The Thin Wall" before? If it´s so, you are really in for a TREAT!! I bet my bottom (dollar) that you´ll just love that track!!
Vienna is hands down not only one of the best from the 80's but of any decade, though Ultravox as a band never held my interest after the departure of John Foxx, Foxx's 'Metamatic' is a very good album...
Free flowing feedback: Enjoyed the analysis. Did not enjoy the Roland preset. Moog rhymes with rogue. Electronic Music IS real music. Keep up the good work
Thx for doing this. I appreciate your work very much. Im a huge ultravox fan and even bigger DM fan, but I always thought that ultravox is more intelligent music than Depeche. Dont know why 🙃🙂
So good, thanks, had to be played as real instruments (obviously the real ones ho ho) and the keys were not very natural as well as the change of pace....was a pig to play live I've heard
Hmm, never liked those "wind" sounds or the sounds in general. I mean this is 1981, kraftwerk and jarre already showed much better sounds, the wind sounds are just too noisy too harsh sounding for me. Otherwise it might be a great song for the chorus alone.
as much as I appreciate this, the fact that (for obvious reasons) you don't use soundbits of the original for demonstration renders the whole effort useless, more or less. too bad!
Useless you say ?? Buddy you’re just a little bit ungrateful and missing the point here . What exactly don’t you understand about the concept of “song analysis”? I tell you what’, My approach is what makes my channel unique. VG
