@@bflmpsvz870 Everything up to Dicsovery/Islands is mostly great imo. After that very hit and miss. His worst? Probably Guitars. Amarok has some nice bits but it's a bit of a chaotic collage and lacks the depth of feeling of most of his best work on the whole. The story of how he created it is very different to his normal mode of composition. It's great as an audiophile disc. It's also very jarry so not easy listening. It does have some moments of beauty and other worldly aspects, as most of his work does. But how anyone can say it's his best is beyond me. It's a bit like saying you think the best Beatles song is Polythene Pam or Savoy Truffle.
@@Coneman3 Yes I agree with you that his early work is way better than later. That is where Amarok fits, recorded in 1990. In my opinion an hour of genius on top of his game. Every single second of it.
Just amazing. I'm sure Mike could perform the whole "Tubular Bells" - album only on his acoustic guitar and it would sound marvellous. Thanks for posting this.
I still remember seeing this at the time! My, what a numpty that bloke truly was! Mr Oldfield still one of the greatest and most versatile guitarists. This just reminds me what a great album Amorok is.
Ah, I love Mike's laid back attitude :P I mean the interviewers aren't all there are they? I mean with comments like "This is acoustic guitar isn't it?" and "You can't still play tubular bells can you?" and "By the way, if you break a thumbnail..." Come on! This is Mike Oldfield the music legend you're talking to!!! :P
Mike must have been "pregnant" with Amarok a long time as this video is from 1987, 3 years ahead of Amarok. Fantastic performance from the best guitarist in the world.
Mike is truly a musical God. I have remote links with him but still put his music on top of the rest of the musicians, but not in a biased way. Mike has been my favourite since childhood. So what if he seems insecure. Its that quality that has brought out his music I think. For example, autistic people have a huge talent somewhere. They are just different and to speak to Mike he doesn't come across as insecure.
@Yerodineran She actually asks "You can't just play Tubular Bells can you?", which isn't so much a question as a request. She may not use her actual words 100% correctly, but she means "Would you please play a bit of Tubular Bells".
I don't know why, but I felt they were underrating him in this video. I mean... Oldfield is a great musician, genius actually. All his songs have the perfect balance between musical complexity and, somehow, "sentimental" lyrics.
+Pustocvet The best part is, the original TB was played on piano not guitar, so he must have specifically been practicing this guitar part which wasn't even in the original song
wow!! saw this on breakfast tv when it was broadcast in 85/86..not sure exactly love the ending of taurus3 which made it onto Amarok album...credited in liner notes as TV-am pure genius and one of the great under-rated guitarists
Gosh i remember this as a kid. C'mon pesenters! You're seeing in front of your eyes a genius, and all they can say is 'yes that's rather lovely mike' !!!!! Where's the excitement, the great applause- no wonder he never did telly much, who could blame him lol
Amazing how he copes with such dumb "interview"- questions ... He's got more going on in his fingers than they have in both brains put together. He is as a very good guitar-player. Needless to say how much I appreciate all his other work. PS. I couldn't help wondering what it was that he kept inside his guitar - but it made itself wanting to be heard ... :o)
All Tunes plus tunes created by Myke. I love the one starting by the brasilian carnival whistle. The voice from the deceased Margaret Tatcher. and so on.. No one can absorb Amarok straight forward. By the way, I`m a rocker: Amarok

i recently purchased earth moving and i think it is realy good and the lyrics i like too. i play it all the time at the moment, are the 2 albums he plays from here done on acoustic instruments like this? in this style i mean
@iCONICAACINOCi I think her point is how difficult it would be to play Tubular Bells on a single guitar. She seems amazed and talks about how he can make the guitar sound like an orchestra, or as Mike puts it: "a walking orchestra". She then wonders if its possible to play Tubular Bells (on guitar). He replies by playing the intro part, which was NOT played on guitar on the album. Shes amazed again and says "oh, how beatiful". Nothing wrong or stupid here. Great playing from Mike as always.
Does anyone have this song, or some parts, in tabs for guitar? I can play some parts from this song allready. But there are some parts, i dont know. For example the fast beginning, (its from Amarok-called "stop"). Maybe somebody want to learn this song too, so we could cooperate for a complete tabulature of this song.. The interviewers, Diamond and thingy (cant recall his name) do leave you pulling your hair out lol. Wish MO would do more stuff in britain. A revisit to Hergest Ridge would be brilliant... for me anyway since i don't live too far off ;0)
So mike plays like a legend and she says....''Thanks very much that's really great' I hope Shes not kicking herself for saying that!.....she says ' you sort of write like you're an orchestra' so mike replies 'do I?' lol Hes a genius!!!!! This mans being told how she thinks he sounds! Lol
Yeah, Amarok used basically no Synths at all.. Its fantastically done, but very very odd.. Crises (where taurus iii is from) is a wonderful mix of the two, but using more live acoustic instruments.
IS that an acoustic guitar?? the guy belows right, they dont have a clue. Jeez mike oldfield is amzing, its always a priveledge seing him like this, woowee wata legend lol

Great to see Mike Oldfield, but good grief, what a pain it must have been for him..."can you still play tubular bells?", what stupid comments and questions... the only proper ending for this performance would be him smashing the guitar on the hosts! christ!
@borrachocabron Now thats a crazy statement, especially because its coming from Spain, where Paco de Lucia is from too. Mike Oldfield is one of the greatest composers alive, but for his guitar skill i can say, well, there are probably at least 1000 better players just in your country.
Love the snobs commenting on this vid spouting "the fools, Philistines etc" Just shut up and get to grips there is other people in the world cept you. Good stuff mike!
This interview is like watching 'Alan Partridge' i'm sure Steve Coogan based the Partridge character on all these inept 1980s breakfast show hosts. Mike Oldfield looks really awkward, he had already pre-warned them not to expect too much banter i bet he cringes watching this. Excellent musician very strange man.
The pair of them (Anne Diamond, and that guy with the tash)are totally ignorant to the mans music. Some of the tunes in Amarok date back to 1969. See the "Branches" track in the re-release of Mike and Sally's "Children of the Sun" album.
"That's an acoustic guitar, isn't it?" And Mike has to check and make sure it is, chuckling! I love it!
Quite underrated...especially regarding his guitar talents, pity really, his playing is so unique,so powerful,I love it.
